Estimation of Fatigue Damage Due to Rolling Contact in a Railway Wheel Using FEM Analysis

Fatigue damage on the train wheel surface was estimated by considering the effect of friction coefficient of rolling on the contact surface between the wheel and rail during operation. From FEM analys, the maximum Tresca stress was 550.7 MPa at a depth of 2.07 mm under the maximum contact pressure (
= 894.3 MPa) between wheel and rail. The maximum stress continued to increase along with the increase in the frictional coefficient. The fatigue initiation lifetime of the wheel by the rolling contact was predicted using the Smith-Watson-Topper (SWT) equation and the maximum principal strain equation (
The Assessment of the Risk Index of Live-line Works on Distribution Line by the Accident Analysis

The live-line works are very dangerous because of direct contacts with the distribution line or neighboring contacts. So the purpose of this study is to identify the risk factor by accident occurrence form and accident case analysis, and to suggest the quantified risk index by risk occurrence frequency and risk strength analysis. And the risk index assessment is researched by accident cases analysis on work type. Accident cases of transmission distribution line are researched based on data of the Ministry of Employment and Labor in the last ten-year period (2000~2009). In results of this paper, high risk isn't always a priority of safety measures. Risk occurrence frequency and risk strength have to be considered according to detail work types, work methods and conditions of field work. And safety management measures must be planned according to risk occurrence frequency and risk strength.
A Study on the Development of Simulating Tool for Evaluation of Electrostatic Discharge

Explosion and fire cause about 30 reported industrial major accidents a year by ignition source which discharge of electrostatic generated to flammable gas, vapor, dust and mixtures. It brings economically and humanly very large loss that accident was caused by fire and explosion from electrostatic discharge. Thus, it is very important that electrostatic discharge energy is to be control below not to be igniting flammable mixtures. There are two kinds of analysis model for electrostatic discharge, human body model and machine model. Human body model is available the parameter of human's electrical equivalent that capacitance is 100 pF, resistance is
. To simulate and visualize the electrostatic discharge from human body need a very expensive and high voltage simulator. In this paper, we measured the value of capacitance and resistance concerned with test materials and sizing of specimen and the value of charged voltage concerned with test specimen and distance to develop an electrostatic charge/discharge simulating tool for teaching with which concerned industrial employee and students. The result of experiments, we conformed that the minimum ignition energy of methane-oxygen mixtures meets well the equation
, and found out that the insulating material and sizing of equivalent value having human body mode are the poly ethylene of 200 mm and 300 mm of diameter. Developed electrostatic charge/discharge simulating tool has many merits; simple mechanism, low cost, no need of electric power and so on.
A Study on the Combustion Characteristic of Building Materials

This paper studied combustion characteristics of the building materials such as polyurethane-foam, sponge type sound-absorbing materials and styrofoam. To estimate of the combustion characteristics, we carried out combustion experiment of the building materials. And then to evaluate the suitability of the building materials, we measured heat release rate(HRR) and smoke density(Ds) of polyurethane-foam, sponge type sound-absorbing materials and styrofoam using by a cone-calorimeter. From the combustion experimental results, the general type sound-absorbing materials (GSAM) and styrofoam were rapid burned simultaneously with ignition and the incombustibility type sound-absorbing materials(ISAM) and polyurethane-foam had all gone out simultaneously with ignition. Measured results of HRR and Ds were not satisfied KS F ISO 5660-1 and IMO FTP Code, from the results, the polyurethane-foam, the sponge type sound-absorbing material and the styrofoam were ill-suited for using building interior materials.
Experimental Studies on Risks of BB Pellets Using Gelatine Based Simulants

Experimental studies were performed to investigate the injury potential of BB pellets through gelatine based simulants. In order to record BB pellet movements penetrating into the target simulant, a high-speed video camera was used. In this study the first investigation involved the effects on concentrations, homogeneity and gelation times of the gelatine simulant. The second investigation involved the penetration depth of the pellets to the simulant by different distances between the BB gun and the simulant. The final one is associated with impact velocity, threshold velocity and penetration depth of the pellets by different kinetic energies of the BB gun. Results provided the basis in assessing the injury potential of BB pellets.
A Study on the Safety Plan for Usage of the Construction Field Work Plate

Death disaster among the disasters in construction field is mainly occurred by crash, and the work plate is the main objects causing crash. This study was performed by interview with workers in construction field to evaluate the consciousness on safety and to analyze the type of use and the state. Finally the problems while using work plate were appeared with its requirements for the improved use. Based on the results from this study, amendments were proposed for some parts of regulation related, and further four types of development on the safe work plate were presented. It is expected that the safer construction environment could be composed by using the results.
A Study on the Safety of Reuse Work Plate by Performance Test

The work plate in a construction sites is a frequent cause of falling. But the bulk of the work plates lent to the construction site are handled carelessly by workers. There is general concern about performance declining by repetitive use. However, there is not a accurate guide, research and study on reuse work plate. This study was conducted in order to judge the classification guide to reuse work plate and measure the performance of classified reuse work plates. It is the result that even the A-grade plates classified to be in good shape by workers are below the performance standard. This means that the guide and classification are ineffective.
Survey on Work Platform on Double Scaffold by Safety Standards

Work platform is temporary material that many workers use in construction field, but many workers construct and use the work platform without considering safety standards, workers who have not the knowledge of safety standards construct the work platform in weakness and use the work platform in unstable, According to the statistics in 2009, 1230 people were injured at the work platform. Among them, victims by falling account for about 77% and mostly lead to fatal injuries. we have studied and survey about the safety or danger of the work platform(set limits to duble scaffold) in construction field and about how many workers observe safety standards of the work platform. According to the result of this survey, 24%~100%(average : 68%) of the work platform in survey is not observe the safety standards.
Seismic Safety Assessment of Long Period Structures Base on Elastic/Inelastic Response Characteristics

The earthquake characteristic assessment of social overhead facilities would be an important examination issue for seismic capacity enhancement. This study is intended to reasonably evaluate the structural behavior of longperiod frame structures considering near-fault and far-fault earthquake characteristics. Elastic/inelastic time history analyses were performd by selecting the objective structure which can precisely reflect the effect of input ground motion. Based on the result of numerical analysis, we have investigated response aspects of shear force, moment, acceleration and displacement according to earthquake characteristics. Moreover, in order to understand the inelastic behavior of the objective structure, we have analyzed and compared collapse modes by considering the occurrence process of plastic hinges. The outcome of this research is expected to provide the basic information for the seismic safety assessment of long-period frame structures.
A Study on the Buckling Characteristics of Pipe Support(V6)

Among the accidents and failures that occur during concrete construction, many are formwork failures which usually happen when concrete is being placed. A system of formwork filled with wet concrete has its weight at the top and is not basically a stable structure. Slab formwork consists of sheathing, stringer, hanger and shore. There are several types of adjustable shores. In construction site, pipe supports are usually used as a shore of slab formwork. In this study, pipe support systems with/without horizontal connector were measured by buckling test. Buckling load of respective pipe support system was analyzed by structural analysis program(MIDAS). Buckling load of pipe support with/without horizontal connector was got by test and structural analysis. According to these results, we know that horizontal connector made pipe support system very safe. Buckling load of pipe support with horizontal connector is 56% higher than that without horizontal connector. So horizontal connector is important in slab formwork systems. Finally, the present study results will be used to design slab formwork system safely in the construction sites.
Improvement on Access Control of Hazard Zone in a Steel Manufacturing Industry

Access-control of hazard zone in a steel manufacturing industry is studied in terms of safety management. Based on the results of risk evaluation for hazard zone, three risk zones with low, middle and high level are categorized. These zones have different color door and locking shape depending on their risk levels. At the high level, red door and key-based locking system are employed to accessed-controled path. Furthermore, tagout, lockout, interlock system for emergency stop, warning and flashing are also introduced. New standardized procedure of access-control for various hazard zones, which could help to greatly contribute to the prevention of accidents in advance, is proposed considering the risk level and the condition of given hazard zones. The standardized procedure of access-management suggested in this study will take an effective role as one of safety guide lines for hazardous workshop of manufacturing industries.
Effect of Trunk Flexion and Low Extremity Posture on Maximum Holding Time

Despite most of tasks in manufacturing, construction and agriculture, etc., were currently mechanized and automated, manual materials handling still existed in atypical working condition. In case of manual materials handling, repetitive work, inappropriate working posture, excessive force, contact stress might cause overload, which could lead to work-related musculoskeletal disorders and low back pains. On this basis, the goal of this study is to reveal the effects of various lifting postures of trunk angles and lower extremity postures on maximum holding time(MHT). Twenty two subjects were recruited from a university population. The experiment was designed by a combination of three trunk angle (
) and three lower extremity postures(straight, bent, kneeling). Before experimental trials, subjects performed MVC(maximum voluntary contraction) exertions in three trunk angles (
) to calculate 30%MVC at designated postures. In each trial, they were required to hold the handheld load(30%MVC) for a designated posture as long as they could. The results of MVC by trunk angles were measured in
orders, but those of MHT measured in
orders. These results showed that straight posture is the ideal working posture in work exerted a strong force for a short time, but the ability to work might be improved in the trunk angle
in work required 30%MVC for a long time. Also, results of MVC and MHT by lower extremity postures measured in straight > bent > kneeling orders.
Evaluation of Risk Factors of Musculoskeletal Disorders in Cashier Work Activities

The objective of this study was to identify risk factors associated with the occurrence of musculo-skeletal symptoms of cashiers and provide suggestions for an improved workspace design. Workload and exertion of each task were measured using job analysis and posture analysis. The three most time-consuming tasks were waiting (43.8%), scanning (23.5%) and payment transaction (22.9%). It was analyzed that the workspace can be improved by applying Korean anthropometric data to the design of the desk height. The most common posture was a standing posture with neutral back, and bent lower arms and hands. Finally, it was revealed that 'scanning' and 'payment transaction' seemed more stressful than other operations. The result of the ergonomic evaluation would be a useful basis for designing an improved workspace.
Influence of Time Stress on EEG Characteristics Related with Human Errors

It is well known that urgency resulted from time stress can be a great cause to industrial accidents. Therefore, time stress has been studied in the aspect of macroscopic view, namely industrial safety management, but has not been studied in microscopic view such as psychophysiological approach. Among diverse psychophysiological indices, Electroencephalogram(EEG) would be on of the most objective psychophysiological research technique on human errors though few research has been taken yet. This study aimed to get characteristics of human error while committing a simple arithmetic addition task by utilizing the power spectrum technique of EEG data. Each experiment was composed of 2 tasks under different condition - with and without time stress. As subjects, 5 young undergraduate students in their early twenties participated in this study. The results advocated a well-known fact that time stress downgrades the performance of human workers. However, correct answer rate and response time were not significantly influenced by time stress factor which might be explained by the constructural factor adopted in the present study. As in the previous studies, among various EEG-related measures, relative band power ratios of
waves to sum of
wave powers, namely
seemed to be the most effective measures to grasp variation of brain activities in time-stressed situation so that discussions were expanded about their variations.
Discernment Model of Traffic Accident for an Age-old Driver's License Management

The weight of elderly people in Korea has been increasing. Statistics show that the percentage of the elderly people in Korea was 3.1% in 1970; 3.8% in 1980; 5.1% in 1990, and 7.2% in 2000. Based on this trend, thus, the number of elderly people could be estimated to be 14% of the whole Korean population in 2018. This reveals that Korea is entering a super-aging society with remarkable fast pace. In such a change, the statistics related to elderly people driving license and the occurrence of traffic accidents are showing a noticeable numerical value. The number of traffic accident fatality in Korea ranks the highest value in OECD Countries. However, the research on old drivers in the nation is going on partially centering on system improvement and management scheme. Thus, first of all, researches about the linkage & characteristics between the driving behavior of old drivers and traffic accident should be implemented, in order properly to draw system improvement and management scheme for the old drivers. Therefore, the focus of this study is the influence model for discerning the severity of the age-old-caused traffic accidents by inquiring into the relation between the Driving Aptitude Test items that make it possible to measure their behavioral characteristics and influential factors by age group on the basis of the data on traffic accidents. The analysis results can be used as basic data for suggesting the behavioral research and countermeasure for traffic safety and its management for old driver in preparation for the aging society.
