Lee, Jeong-Tae ; Kim, Yong-Jin ;
Journal of Korean Medical classics, volume 24, issue 1, 2011, Pages 15~33

Baik, You-Sang ; Yoon, Eun-Kyung ;

Jeong(精) and Sin(神) have very close relation in "Hwangjenaegyeong(黃帝內經)", and jeong(精) is base of sin(神). Jeong is the origin of life force, Sin can be manifested through the Yin-yang inter conversion of Jeong, on the other hand, Jeong can be created through the same conversion of Sin. The Yin-yang inter conversion of Jeong or Sin, means the inclination of Taegeuk(太極) to Unification after division, in this process, life force and creative power are made.
An English Translation Study on the Sixteenth to Twenty-second Issue concerning Pulse Diagnosis of "Classic of Difficult Issues(難經)"
Kang, Hye-Won ; Kim, Jae-Kyoun ; Baek, Jin-Ung ;
Journal of Korean Medical classics, volume 24, issue 1, 2011, Pages 57~71
Although there have been many endeavors aimed at the standardization and globalization of Korean medicine over a long period of time, the access to information on Oriental medical classics has been relatively poor due to the lack of appropriate translation methodology and standard terminology. In order to overcome existing barriers, continuous effort towards precise translation adopting a standard terminology should be maintained. As a part of this procedure, we planned to publish a part of "Classic of difficult issues(難經)" in three sections, and the first two studies have already been published. Based on the methodology and approaches of previous studies, this third study aims to translate parts of "Classic of difficult issues(難經)" into English, beginning with "The Sixteenth Question", and adopting "WHO-IST" terminology. The outcomes of this study are presented as follows: First, based on the result of existing translation studies and the outcome of "WHO-IST", English translation of "Classic of difficult issues(難經)" from "the Sixteenth Question" to "The Twenty-second Question" is offered, hoping to set a model of translation study which can be communicated universally. Second, in order to pave the way for future success in establishing translation studies, it is natural to verify the effectiveness and practicality of standard terminologies including the outcome of "WHO-IST". Continuous translation studies will be required in order to obtain constant feedback and adopt more suitable guidelines during the standardization process. Taking this into consideration, further translation studies of Oriental medical classics including "Classic of difficult issues(難經)" should be continued.
A Study on the Concept of Ul(鬱) in Medical History - Focused on the theory submitted by Zhang-Zihe(張子和)
Eun, Seok-Min ;
Journal of Korean Medical classics, volume 24, issue 1, 2011, Pages 73~84
In the pathological theory of Oriental medicine, the concept of Ul(鬱) largely comprises the two meanings as follows. One is the concept used as the meaning of pathological state originated from stasis in Qi-Xie(氣血) or the function of internal organs. The other is the concept used as the meaning of Ul-disease(鬱病), which is a group of symptom that is mostly characterized by stasis in function of Qi system. The concept of Ul in the medical classics was originated from "Neijing(內經)", and in this book it was depicted as five-Ul(五鬱). Since the concept of Ul was depicted in "Neijing", many relevant theory about it had been developed on the basis of the theory in "Neijing", and in the theoretical development like this, the concept of Ul had become a little bit complicated. With regard to the historical change like this, this study is going to focus on some argument in Ming(明) dynasty, which asserted the existence of deficiency[虛證] in Ul that had opposed the general thought of that time usually recognizing the concept of Ul as [實證]. In this point of view, this study regards Zhang-zihe(張子和) as a doctor who had made an important role in the theoretical development of Ul after "Neijing", and will newly analyze the theoretical development of Ul on the basis of the Zhang-zihe's Ul theory, which is seemed to have played the main role in the formation of concept of Ul as excessive state[實證].
A Study on the Liu Wansu's "Theory on the three wasting-thirst"
Kim, Joong-Han ;
Journal of Korean Medical classics, volume 24, issue 1, 2011, Pages 85~93
Wasting-thirst(消渴) occurs due mainly to dryness-heat(燥熱) which by depleting 'Fluid and Humor'(津液) make symptoms of thirst(口渴) swift digestion with rapid hungering(消穀善饑) frequent urination(小便頻數) according to "Internal Classic"(內經). However, the doctors of those days had a tendency to manage wasting-thirst with herbal drugs of dryness-heat or with drugs that tonifies the kidney. Liu Wansu(劉完素) thought that those kinds of drugs intensify gatro-intestinal dryness-heat and consequently could not be suitable for the patients with wasting-thirst. He said that they had mistaken about the relation between five viscera(五臟) and six climate condition(六氣) and that they did not know thoroughly on the theory of branch and root(標本). For preventing the disease of wasting-thirst, Liu Wansu(劉完素) recommended avoiding gatro-intestinal drying caused by the intake of dryness-heat diet, and warned not to deplete 'Fluid and Humor' due to stress-induced fire(火), not to damage yin qi(陰氣) through severe diseases.

The cough is generally known as a symptom occurred from Lung. But it was descriptive of the symptom every internal organs can cause in "HwangjenaegyeongSomun Haelon". The reason is that, when a pathogenic Gi attack human body, the body skin which have the relationship to Lung is attacked firstly. But the internal organs preside over each seasons of the year, so the season's presiding organ is ultimately attacked. And in "Somun Haelon" the partner symptoms of five solid organs cough and six hollow organs cough are being described, so we can distinguish between each internal organs coughs. Clinically, the cough is most common symptom and one of the most difficult symptom. In my opinion, the origin organ of cough is very various, but the doctor fix their thinking to the Lung, so the cough became a most difficult symptom. This thesis describe pathogenesis and partner symptoms of five solid organs cough and six hollow organs cough. And illustrate clinical examples and some medical prescriptions. Intend to show that various treatment after differentiation of syndromes[辨證施治] surely needed for effective curing of a cough.
