A Study on the substance of Eum-Fire(陰火) in Li Dong-yuan(李東垣)'s Eum-Fire theory
Eun, Seok-Min ;
Journal of Korean Medical classics, volume 25, issue 4, 2012, Pages 5~22
Objective : The concept of Eum-Fire(陰火), which was brought up by Li Dong-yuan(李東垣), is such a very ambiguous thing that many medical scholars had tried to understand its real meaning. Trying to understand the real concept of Eum-Fire, this study goes on based on the view that the concept of Eum-Fire in the medical books of Li Dong-yuan was used as being the same thing with the concept of Xim-Fire(心火) and Premier-Fire (相火), and the substance of this kind of fire is the fire in Ximpo(心包) and Myungmun (命門) which works in the system of Ximgye(心系). To verify this view is the main objective of this study. Method : Inquiring into Li Dong-yuan's medical books, this study investigated examples of the uses of the terms of Eum-Fire, Xim-Fire and Premier-Fire, and analyzed the relation between the meanings of these terms. And as a collateral evidence to the main view of this study, this study notes Wang An-dao(王安道)'s reference about Eum-Fire and inquires into the concept of Premier-Fire that was formed by Liu He-jian(劉河間), who had been referred to in Wang An-dao's argument about Eum-Fire. And this study also presents the Chen Shi-duo(陳士鐸)'s view about Eum-Fire that is expected to show a more concrete concept of Eum-Fire than now and seems to deserve to be compared with that of Li Dong-yuan. Result and Conclusion : It could be understood that the concept of Eum-Fire in Li Dong-yuan's books was used as a thing that owns the same substance as a kind of fire with Xim-Fire and Premier-Fire. In this viewpoint it could also be understood that Li Dong-yuan had attached the concepts like Xim-Fire and Eum-Fire to the concept of Premier-Fire, so terms like these could be understood as such concepts that represented the diverse figures of Premier-Fire. And this study also found that the substance of Xim-Fire as a kind of Premier-Fire means the fire of Ximpo and Myungmun that works in the system of Ximgye, which seems to be formerly introduced as a frame of Premier-Fire by Liu He-jian. This study also found the indirect basis of this viewpoint in the books of Chen Shi-duo, and could get a conclusion that Chen Shi-duo's view about Eum-Fire can be regarded as a thing that could show us more concrete matter of Eum-Fire than now.
A study on the Ke-qin's recognition about Reverting yin disease pattern in Shanghanlun(傷寒論)
Lee, Sang-Hyup ;
Journal of Korean Medical classics, volume 25, issue 4, 2012, Pages 23~38
Objective : Generally speaking Reverting yin disease pattern(厥陰病) is the last step in cold damage(傷寒). Therefore recognized Yin cold disease(陰寒病) is increasing, and resist action One Yang qi(一陽) began to creep into body. But Ke Qin(柯琴) have a different way of thinking that Reverting yin disease pattern connected with the loss of Liver's function. Liver qi depression(肝鬱) make a ministerial fire(相火), and it make a nutrient and blood insufficiency(營血不足). Method : I will try to describe the Sanghanlun's Reverting yin disease pattern through the Ke-qin's JueyinbingJie(厥陰病解), and I would like to point out that the exact meaning of Reverting yin(厥陰) is connected with Liver's ministerial fire. Result : Ke Qin's JueyinbingJie explained the Reverting yin disease pattern was connected with Liver(肝), and according to Six qi theory(六氣學說) connected with ministerial fire, and according to meridian and Collateral theory(經絡學說) connected with closing referring to inward actions(闔) among the Opening closing and pivot(關闔樞). Conclusion : Ke Qin was recognized that Reverting yin disease pattern have relevance to the loss of Liver's function. In other world, It is connect with soothe the liver and purge fire(疏肝瀉火) and nutrient and blood insufficiency(營血不足).
Comparison of Decision System in both Differentiation of Syndromes and Treatments(辨證論治) and Divination by Achillea sibirica(蓍草占)
Jo, Hak-Jun ;
Journal of Korean Medical classics, volume 25, issue 4, 2012, Pages 39~55
Objective : In order to find the decision system in differentiation of syndromes and treatments, I paid attention to divination by Achillea sibireca. Method : I pulled out the elements of differentiation of syndromes and treatments in Zh
(中醫內科學), Uihagipmun Sanghan(醫學入門 傷寒), Donguibogam Japbyeong(東醫寶鑑 雜病) and compared them with the horoscope in The Book of Changes(周易) from the relativity of both eight principles(八綱) etc and subdivision in the entity of the cosmos (太極內 分化). Result : From this viewpoint, the decision system that has relative references in differentiation of syndromes & treatments on cold diseases(傷寒病) and complexed diseases(雜病) by eight principles etc can be compared with the decision system in divination by Achillea sibireca that the entity of the cosmos(太極) gradually can be breakdown into the positive and negative(陰陽), the positive and negative can be breakdown into four phases(四象), four phases can be breakdown into eight signs of divination(八卦), eight signs of divination can be breakdown into 64 divination signs(64卦). Conclusion : I had found that differentiation of syndromes and treatments and divination by Achillea sibireca have similarity to each other in side of decision system. Those decision systems for clinical use and telling the future has many relative references and are made of multiple structures. Clinician can easily, exactly distinguish similar syndromes of many another diseases through this way.
Source And Identity Supporting The Theory of Materiality of Tri-Energizer in Nei Jing
Yoon, Chang-Yeol ;
Journal of Korean Medical classics, volume 25, issue 4, 2012, Pages 57~63
Objective & Method : We investigated the identity of tri-energizer, which was originally described in Huang Di Nei Jing and claimed by traditional scholars, and drew the following conclusions. Result & Conclusion : According to Huang Di Nei Jing tri-energizer is one of the six hollow-organs and is called hollow organs for digestion and elimination, water guffer organ, or solitary hollow organ. It is believed that tri-energizer is regarded as the existing entity based on following several different sources; it functions as the course of channels, regulates wind and link and physiological function-especially intrinsic function of upper, middle, lower internal organs. It also controls syndromes and dysfunction of an illness, the surface of the body, and the cracked surface of the skin. Finally, bold and timidity depend on the tri-energizer. Experts determined the true nature of tri-energizer types. Experts include: Yu Tuan from the Ming dynasty, Tang Jong Hai and Ye Lin from the Qing dynasty, and Zhang Xi Chun from the Zhunghua Minguo period. These experts' claims are based on shape and forms of tri-energizer. Our examinations of anatomical and physiological basis on tri-energizers showed that, in a narrow sense, tri-energizer indicates visceral and parietal peritoneum and omentum surrounding the internal organs, and in a broad sense, indicates the overall membrane wrapping around the whole internal organs including five visceral organs and six hollow organs.

Somoon, Macyojungmiron is the origin of Chongu-mac diagnosis. The method of dividing the three segments in Chongu-mac diagnosis is from Somoon, Macyojungmiron. The Chongu-mac diagnosis should follow the principles found in Naekyung.
A Study on the importance of makwon(膜原) in seupyeoljeung(濕熱證) - Based on the Seupyeoljobyeon(濕熱條辨) -
Kim, Sang-Hyun ; Baik, You-Sang ; Jeong, Chang-Hyun ; Jang, Woo-Chang ;
Journal of Korean Medical classics, volume 25, issue 4, 2012, Pages 85~94
The concept of makwon(膜原) holds great importance in the texts of Seup-yeoljobyeon(濕熱條辨). Research on the concept was based on Seolsaengbaek(薛生白)'s medical theories organized by Wang Maengyeong(王孟英). The results are as follows. Seolsaengbaek describes makwon as half-exterior half-interior(半表半裏) of yang-myeong(陽明) and half-exterior half-interior of the body. The half-exterior half-interior in these definitions each hold a different meaning. In half-exterior half-interior of yang-myeong, it refers to its mediating function, focusing on the location of makwon as yang-myeong. In half-exterior half-interior of the body, it refers to an intersection where the pathological mechanism of damp-heat disease(seup-yeoljeung 濕熱證) begins, and also where the course of the disease changes. This is why treatment of the makwon is included in treating many damp-heat disease symptoms. The conditions derived from the original damp-heat disease can follow the designated prognosis, or follow a reversed course. Because of its intersecting role, treating the makwon can help prevent aggravation. In treatment, consideration of the healthygi(jeonggi 正氣), the bodily fluids(jinaek 津液) with an understanding of the various prognosis is crucial.
A Review on 'cunkou(寸口)' in Maijing(脈經)
Song, Ji-Chung ; Jeong, Hyun-Jong ; Keum, Kyungsoo ; Eom, Dong-Myung ;
Journal of Korean Medical classics, volume 25, issue 4, 2012, Pages 95~103
Objective : There are several terms on palpation such as cunkou(寸口), qikou(氣口), maikou(脈口). In traditional medicine dictionary or even WHO international standard terminologies on traditional medicine in the western pacific region, there are no discriminations about them. However, there are some differences in usages of cunkou, qikou, maikou at Maijing. Method : First, we searched usages of term, cunkou, qikou, maikou in Huangdineijing(黃帝內經) and Maijing and compared the meanings. Result : Meanings of cunkou, qikou, maikou in Huangdineijing are pair with renying(人迎) and inch-bar-cubit on wrist. Meanings of cunkou in Maijing are pair with renying, inch-bar-cubit on wrist and only inch on wrist. Meanings of qikou, maikou in Maijing are inch-bar-cubit on wrist. Conclusion : Cunkou, qikou, maikou are known as same terms. However, scholars have to be cautious when they use cunkou, qikou, maikou term and comprehend those in book.

Moh, Han Young ; Lim, Gyo-Min ; Baek, Jin-Ung ;
Journal of Korean Medical classics, volume 25, issue 4, 2012, Pages 123~147
Objective : By establishing the Five Viscera Source Point Acupuncture as the targeted acupuncture treatment for stadardization, as the first step, this study was conducted to sort the indications of each acupuncture remedies, which can be referred as one of the most important factors in acupuncture treatment, based on Yeoungchu. Method : This study selected only the contents related to indications of five viscera, by extracting the relevant sentences from Yeoungchu using the search words Liver(Liver Meridian, First Yin), Heart(Pericardium, Heart Meridian, Second Yin), Spleen(Spleen meridian, Third Yin), Lung(Lung Meridian, Third Yin), and Kidney(Kidney Meridian, Second Yin). Result & Conclusion : 1. We selected and extracted text related to liver disease from Chapter 16, heart (pericardium) disease from Chapter 16, spleen disease from Chapter 19, lung disease from Chapter 17, and finally kidney disease from Chapter 17 of Yeoungchu. 2. The basic theory of applying Five Viscera Source Point Acupuncture to five viscera diseases is first assorting the diseases according to its state (i.e. deficiency or excess), then draining the source point of the appropriate viscus in case of excess, or supplementing the source point of the appropriate viscus in case of deficiency. 3. For the correct application of Five Viscera Source Point Acupuncture, the classification of the disease, not only the judgement on its state, must be presented systematically and synthetically in combination with Four Examinations. Therefore the follow-up studies needs to be conducted.
