A Study of Family Resources and Stress of Main Caregivers for the Disordered Elderly Family
Bae, Ok-Hyun ; Hong, Sang-Ook ;
Korean Journal of Human Ecology, volume 7, issue 2, 1998, Pages 1~10
The purpose of this study are to examine the influential variables between general character, family system, coping strategies, social support and stress of main caregivers for disordered elderly family. This study was conducted by interviewing of 177 family-members care to giving disordered elderly families in Taegu and Kyeongbuk province. The data were analyzed with the SPSS statistical package using frequency and percentage, multiple regression and path analysis. The results of this study were as follow : The variables influencing stress related to the disordered elderly family are the degree of disorder (
), caring-time-per day (
), employment status of main caregivers (
), social support (
), relational coping strategies (
), problem-avoidance coping strategies (
). Thus, in disordered elderly families, a high-stress situation arises with a highly-educated caregiver when problem-avoidence coping strategies or relational coping strategies are used or when daily caring time is great. A low-stress situation results when the caregiver is employed and the social support level is high.
Stress and Psychological Adjustment of Poor Single Mothers: Buffer Effects of Social Support
Kim, Young-Hee ;
Korean Journal of Human Ecology, volume 7, issue 2, 1998, Pages 11~22
Social support may be a crucial aspect in single mothers' adjustment from the loss of spouse. Using a survey data collected from 285 widowed or divorced mothers, this study investigated whether social support buffers the deleterious effects of stress on psychological adjustment among poor single mothers. Results revealed that social support is not provided for at a desirable level. After controlling the single mothers' characteristics, stress in daily life, emotional support, job status and child relationship were associated with depression of them. It was also founded that emotional support buffer the negative effect of stress on depression of single mothers. Therefore, the support programs focused on emotional support are necessary for single mothers to enhance their mental health.
Consumption Awarenese and Behavior of Adolescents
Shim, Young ; Oh, Soo-Kyoung ;
Korean Journal of Human Ecology, volume 7, issue 2, 1998, Pages 23~34
The purpose of this study was to examine the awareness and the behavior of adolescents about consumption. Two-hundred students attending in high school were selected, and surveyed using questionnaires. Among them, 196 students were used in statistical analyses, with frequency, percentage, mean, correlation analysis, and regression analysis in SPSS/PC+ program. The results were as follows: the levels of the awareness and the behavior of adolescents about consumption in each of purchase, use and disposition steps were more or less middle in terms of rationality or soundness. The correlations between the awareness and the behavior on conspicuous-consumption and between the awareness and the behavior of imitated-consumption in a purchase step were negatively siginificant, and the correlation between the awareness and the behavior on product frugality in a use step was positively significant. In a purchase step, the conspicuous-consumption behavior was affected by the conspicuous-consumption awareness and sex, while the imitated-consumption behavior was affeted by the imitated-consumption awareness, sex and monthly household income. The consumption behavior on product frugality in a use step was affected by its' awareness, monthly household income, and personal expense management. The environment conservation behavior in a disposition was influenced only by monthly personal expenses.

Kim, In-Sook ; Baek, Seon-Hee ; Lee, Youn-Ja ;
Korean Journal of Human Ecology, volume 7, issue 2, 1998, Pages 35~47
The purpose of this study was to examine the actual condition on consumption of adolescents, focused on their pocket money. Three-hundred students attending in middle and high school in Kyounggi Province were selected, and surveyed using questionnaires. Out of them, 272 students were used in statistical analysis, with frequency, percentage and Chi-test in SPSS/PC+ program. The results were as follows : First, most adolescents got pocket money irregularly from their mothers and average amount per month was more than 10 thousands and less than 50 thousands won. And they weren't satisfied with that amount, especially girl students. Second, most adolescents got extra money when it is a gala day or their records were improved. And most of them did nothing on consideration for their pocket money. Third, most adolescents spent pocket money for hobby or leisure and for snacks. Fourth, most adolescents had never guided how to spend money and had never evaluated their money spending. Fifth, most adolescents tried to spend money thoughtfully and evaluated their friends spent money on impulse. Sixth, most adolescents wanted to buy clothings and friends influenced their spending habit.
The Influence of the New Generation's Lifestyle on its Fashion
Lee, Eun-Kyoung ; Park, Eun-Soon ;
Korean Journal of Human Ecology, volume 7, issue 2, 1998, Pages 49~61
The purpose of this study was to understand the new generation's culture and to analyze if the characteristics of their lifestyle is significant for the study of new generation's fashion. The new generation's characteristics of lifestyle can be described as a strong pride of their own self and the life which expresses that pride. To analyze this characteristics connecting it with fashion, it is as follows: -It is the egocentric sensitivity culture. In their fashion, there appears a tendency that sense and individuality are counted much rather than fashion. -Diverse fashion information is gained through the mass media and communication. The sense for fashion is liable to change according to the circumstances and, simulated world is made. -The sense of denial is not shown much to the western lifestyle and way of thinking owning to the international open culture. Their consciousness and favorite of fashion are beyond the border. The new generation showed the unprecedent way of expression, denying the established form, and this is defined as Borderless fashion. The Borderless fashion leads a whole trend of new generation's fashion in the late part of ninties. Two typical trends appear as Genderless look for the individualic group and Romanticism look laying stress on womanliness.
A Study on Classifying Body Forms for the Standards Regarding Size and Grading Method(I)
Kwon, Sook-Hee ;
Korean Journal of Human Ecology, volume 7, issue 2, 1998, Pages 63~73
To get well-fitted ready-made clothings with beautiful silhouettes, it's better to classify body forms into several forms and to assign sizing within each form than to grade just based on body size regardless of body styles. This study illucidated the importance of drop value in the results of surveying the current values of sizing and grading. Therefore, it's meaningful to get the classification of body form with appropriate distribution of drop values of the body, and the distribution of drop value and the frequency of each form is very helpful to name the combined sizing or coverage of ready-made clothes. This study aimed at classifying body forms with various drop values using multivariate analysis for sizing and grading. Factor analysis and cluster analysis were done using measured values from 346 unmarried women. The results are as follows: 1. The factor which explains body forms was obtained by factor analysis, and the representative major 18 items which have important roles in classifying body forms were selected among the measured values with high factor loading and communality. 2. The body forms were classified into 8 groups based on the charateristics, frequencies and distributions of them obtained from cluster analysis. 3. Each classified body form showed conspicuous difference in drop value and the difference of body form mainly resulted from the difference between waist and hip rather than the difference between bust circumference and waist in Korean unmarried women.
Dyeing Properties and Colorfastness of Direct-Dyed Ramie, Flax, and Cotton
Bang, Hey-Kyong ; Choi, In-Ryeo ;
Korean Journal of Human Ecology, volume 7, issue 2, 1998, Pages 75~80
In this paper, deying properties and colorfastness of ramie, flax, and cotton fabrics for direct dyes were compared. When dyed in a same dyeing bath ratio, in case of green dyes, colorfastness to light was similar for three fabrics but in case of red dyes, cotton had a lower level. For colorfastness to laundering, three fabrics were similar and there were no consistent differences. The degree of stain about white fabric cotton was highest in case of red dyes. The degree of stain about white fabric wool showed the high resistance of stain and little stain was seen. This result represented that the used dyes were proper direct dyes for cellulosic fibers. For the difference of shade, the cotton was cosistently brighter and the shade of ramie was darker than of cotton and flax. This might mean that optical effects arouse from the comparatively large cross-sectional size of the ramie fiber and its highly ordered structure.
The Wearing Sensation and Physiological Responses in School Wear in the High School Girl's
Kweon, Soo-Ae ;
Korean Journal of Human Ecology, volume 7, issue 2, 1998, Pages 81~91
The subjects in this research were 368 girls in high school for survey, and wearing sensation and physiological responses were investigated through wearing trials on human body in climatic chamber based on these results from the survey. The results are as follows : 1. They enjoyed wearing t-shirts, jackets, vests, and blouses in order for the upper clothes, and they preferred t-shirts to blouses. For the lower clothes, they enjoyed slacks much more than skirts. The weight of clothes was significantly heavier in the group where they wore the uniforms(U-group) than in the group where they wore the free styles(F-group). When they chose the school wear, activity was the most important of all, and the maintenance was the least. 2. As the classes were a little cool and dry, most of them dissatisfied the environment. The degree of the satisfaction of the class environment and properties to it were higher in the U-group than in F-group. 3. In the textiles, colors, styles, activity, static electricity, seasonal property, and easiness of putting on and taking off the clothes, F-group was more satisfied than U-group. U-group was more satisfied than F-group in the soil of the clothes. 4. The thermal comfort, thickness, and tightness of the clothes were not significantly different between the groups. The clothes of U-group was heavier than those of F-group, and the tactile sensation in U-group was worse than F-group. In U-group the students felt the skirts very inconvenient when they acted. 5. The weight of the clothes influenced the wearing sensation, therefore the heavier the clothes were the less satisfied they felt. 6. The inside temperature of clothes was significantly higher in U-group than in F-group. The skin temperatures of abdomen and arm were significantly higher in U-group than in F-group, while the skin temperatures of thighs and legs were significantly lower in U-group than in F-group. U-group felt heavier than F-group in wearing the clothes. Therefore the improvement of the clothes weight is needed.
Distribution of Warm Sensitivity over Woman Skin
Lee, Uk-Ja ;
Korean Journal of Human Ecology, volume 7, issue 2, 1998, Pages 93~101
Distribution of warm sensitivity over woman skin was investigated using Thurstone's paired comparisons method on 10 healthy female students. An iron probe 20mm in diameter and 108mm in length was used for the simulator, the temperature of which was adjusted at
in a warm water bath. Twenty-two parts on the left side of the body were examined. Warm sensitivity was significantly different among the body segments, that is, higher on the face and trunk and lower on the upper and lower extremities. The correlation coefficients between warm sensitivity and the warm spots were significant in posterior.

The purpose of this study were to compare the wearing and purchase practice of underwear items, and the attitudes toward underwear in middle school girls with those of their mothers in Chongju city. The questionnaires were to measure the demographic information, wearing and purchase practice of underwear items, and attitudes toward underwear. As statistical analysis, frequencies,
, and t-test were used. The results were as follows: 1. There were partially significant difference beween middle school girls and thier mothers of wearing and purchase practice of underwear. 2. The most important factor was size when they purchase their underwear. As the next important factor, middle school girls considered design, while their mother considered functional properties. 3. Middle school girls were more interested in the design aspect or brand name of underwear and less concerned about functional or practical aspects than their mothers in the attitudes toward underwear.
The Effect of Geometrical Structure on the Heat Transfer of Insulating Nonwovens: A Comparison of Single and Double Layered Nonwovens
Kim, Hee-Sook ;
Korean Journal of Human Ecology, volume 7, issue 2, 1998, Pages 113~119
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of geometrical structure on the heat transfer of insulating nonwovens. Commercially available single and double layered polyester nonwovens have used. Thermal conductivity, k and thermal conductance, h were measured by using a constant temperature sandwich type device at dry and wet state. The results obtained were as follows: 1. Double layered nonwovens showed slightly lower thermal conductance and higher warmability than single layered nonwovens. 2. As moisture regain increased, double layered nonwovens showed higher increasing rate of thermal conductivity than single layered nonwovens.
A Study on Shymui and Dopo of Chung Won District
Lee, Sang-Eun ; Won, Myung-Sim ; Lee, Myung-Sook ;
Korean Journal of Human Ecology, volume 7, issue 2, 1998, Pages 121~137
In this article, the authors studied the characteristics of Costumes used in the Chung Won(中原) District through Shymui(沈衣) and Dopo(道袍) which was widely used as Confucian traditional costume. It was concluded that the costumes in the Chung Won district are very similar to those of Seoul area. The reason for the similarity was due, in addition to nearness to Seoul, to the mixed cultural background during Sam Kuk(三國) dynasty and due to the influence of many returned scholars who are accustomed to the life of ruling class while in Government position in Seoul during Lee Dynasty(李朝). The traditional characteristics of Dopo in Chung Won District also is, unlike other area, very similar to Seoul. Dopo in An Dong(安東) and Kang Nung(江陵) Districts have no parting line in the back while that of Seoul area had parting line. The material used for the Dopo in An Dong area was mainly Sambae and in Seoul Moshi or Myung Ju was the major material for the normal occasion and Sambae was used for the Dopo for funerals.

Koo, Nan-Sook ; Kim, Ji-Hae ;
Korean Journal of Human Ecology, volume 7, issue 2, 1998, Pages 139~148
This study was carried out to investigate the intake pattern and the experience on the kimchi-making, and to analyze the taste preference of kimchi. The questionnaires have been collected from 473 college students in Taejon. Most students had taken baechu-kimchi, kkakduki, yeolmu-kimchi, dongchimi, and cheonggak-kimchi. They liked baechu-kimchi best, and then cheonggak-kimchi. Twenty-seven percent of students took kimchi every meal time and 53 % once a day. The rest 19.4% replied that they could take meals without kimchi. The male students ate more kimchi than the female(p<0.01). Sixty-five percent of them had tried the foreign foods made with kimchi and female had more experience than male(p<0.01). The taste of kimchi-japchae and kimchi-woodong was indicated as edible or taste very good by over two thirds of the students. Kimchi-pizza, kimchi-hamburger, and kimchi-spaghetti were evaluated as edible or taste good by the over half. The aging of kimchi was believed to be the most important factor to determine the taste. Students preferred kimchi which was weak in salty, sweet, and jot-kal taste, strong in hot taste, and proper in sour taste(well-fermented). Compared with the male, the female enjoyed kimchi having stronger sour and weaker jot-kal taste(p<0.01). More female students(43.5%) had experenced kimchi-making than the male(26.5%)(p<0.001). Three-fourth of them had made kimchi with their mother. Baechu-kimchi, cheonggak-kimchi, and dongchimi were recommended as the global food.
Study for the Quality Improvement and Standardization of Manufacturing Process of Yukwa
Kim, Hyang-Sook ;
Korean Journal of Human Ecology, volume 7, issue 2, 1998, Pages 149~159
This study was carried out to examine the role soy milk in the preparation of Yukwa, possibility of substitution of soy milk to isolated soy protein and the effect of drying condition of Yukwa dough on the quality of Yukwa for the purpose of standardization of Yukwa preparation process. Although isolated soy protein did not make any particular effect on the gelatinization characteristics of waxy rice flour, soy milk lowered peak viscosity to half of waxy rice flour. The optimum moisture content of dried Yukwa dough was about 25%, and it can be reached by drying at
under atmosphere pressure for
hours. On the basis of the results of morphological observations, mechanical and sensory measurement of hardness, and sensory test of the internal structure, mouthfeel and overall acceptability, soy milk was more desirable than isolated soy protein for the quality improvement of yukwa.
