The Future Prospect of the Studies on the Objectification of Sasang Constitution
Song, Il-byung ;
Journal of Sasang Constitutional Medicine, volume 10, issue 1, 1998, Pages 1~11
Constitution means to combine the function into the body. It also includes the genetic factor and the environmental factor. Sasang Constitutional Medicine has the organized and unique ideas of the theory and the practice. So it is widly used in korea. But It has a problem to be popular. That's the objectification of Sasang constitution. There are so many studies to classify Sasang constitution analytic and objectively. I try to classify the studies to identify Sasang constitution objectively and check the problems. 1. The morphologic studies of Sasang Constitution are dividied into the figure and the face-speech through the morphologics and the phonetics. We need to standardize and make a simple method through computer software. 2. The study of the mind is used by the questionnaire about the telent, the character, and the greed each constitution. Recently QSCC II computer software is made and is used at many clinics in Korea. We need to recheck children and Taeyangin. 3. The symptom and the disease are subjective. So the study of them is usually used by some diagnostic equipments. But these have to be revaluated on the view of Oriental Medicine and Sasang Constitutional Medicine and try to study the objectification of Sasang constitution. And then we must try to objectify Sasang constitutional disease. 4. Disease and symptoms have to be studied much more about the mechanism and the relation. The study of medicine was done the way of the homeopathy using EAV. But that had some problems. So it should depend on the new science.

The Principle of the Theory of the Nature and Emotion by Lee Je-Ma
Kim, Jin-sung ;
Journal of Sasang Constitutional Medicine, volume 10, issue 1, 1998, Pages 25~40
Sasang Constitutional Medicine is the constition medicine and the basis which constitution reveals is the distinction of the nature and emotion. Therefore the theory of the nature and emotion is the foundation which Sasang Constitution Medicine is coming into being. The author studied the progress that the distinction of the nature and emotion was formed and analized the phenomenon presented by the distinction of it as the principle of the movement of Yin and Yang. The results are following; 1. The beginning of the operation of the nature begins from some one part(cho ; 焦) among four part. That consists of the first factor of constitution-revelation. In accordance with the distinction of the nature, the second factor, that is the distinction of the emotion is determined and the united distinction of the nature and emotion presents the Sasang constitution. 2. The operation of the nature and emotion is the movement of Qi by the property of Yin and Yang and that is the phenomenon presented by the logical and scientifical law. 3. The ontology of Lee Je-ma is Qi-monism. 4. Four emotion(Sorrow, Anger, Joy, Presure) are not partional concept of the emotion but total concept which include all of it.

An assumption about the symptoms that have same pathologic pattern with the point of view, So-Yang-In's general pathology
Jang, Hyeon-lok ;
Journal of Sasang Constitutional Medicine, volume 10, issue 1, 1998, Pages 55~63
The symptoms that have same pathologic pattern written in the chapter of Soyangin's general pathology of the book 'Dongyi Soose Bowon' can give us a key to the Dr.Lee Je-Ma's point of view about the constitutional pathophysiology. As the result, Dr. Lee called the person who has yang-hyperactivity/yin-hypoactivity as So-Yang-In. And the Soyangin has two basic pathologic pathway ; excess of Yang-hyperactivity/excess of Yin-hypoactivity. Each pathologic pathway has variatons though, the pathologic pattern results in above two type. Excess Yin-hypoactivity has three variations of pathologic pattern. 1. smaller excess of Yin-hypoactivity with the normal range of Yang-hyperactivity 2. larger excess Yin-hypoactivity with the excitation of Yang-hyperactivity by the extrinsic factor 3. smaller excess Yin-hypoactivity with the loss of Yang-hyperactivity. And excess Yang-hyperactivity also has three variations. In my point of view, CVA, Hematemesis, Vommiting, Abdominal Pain, Gastric Dyscomfort has No.3 type and Asthmatic condition, Dysentery, Edema has No.1 type.
An objective study of sasang constitution diagnosis by sound analysis

Journal of Sasang Constitutional Medicine, volume 10, issue 1, 1998, Pages 65~80
Proceeding an objective Study of sasang constitution diagnosis by Sound Analysis which uses Computed Sound lab(CSL), we verified the confidence level of Questionnaire of Sasang Constitution classification II(QSCC II) and the first results of Sound Analysis for verifying correlation between the physical character and Sound character are as follows. 1. The confidence level of QSCC II is 70.8% to Soeumin, 60.8% to Soyangin, 74.5% to Taeumin, and 70.08% in total. But, the actual results of verifying the confidence level after making 100 persons an object of study, are that the confidence level of that is 55.10% to Soeumin, 30.77% to Soyangin, 80.00% to Taeumin, and 55.29% in total. So it doesn't coincide with the confidence lecel of QSCC II 70.8%. 2. The results of verifying the confidence level about other 134 persons after enough explanation before the constitutional diagnosis by QSCC II are that the confidence of that is 71.08 to Soeumin, 54.76% to Soyangin 81.82% to Taeumin, and 69.22% in total. 3. The results of verifying the correlation between B.M.I. and Sasang Costitution are that there are significant differences below P<0.001 between Taeumin and Soeumin, and between Taeumin and Soyangin. 4. Height and Weight influence on a fundamental frequency and formant frequency. 5. There are differences for every constitutions in a amplitude when we nave a Sound analysis. As aboves, it is considered that we can find the differences among the constitutional groups, if we have a Sound analysis of the constitutional Sound characters.

1. Background : Sasang Constitutional Medicine divides mankind into Taeyangin(太陽人), Taeumin(太陰人), Soyangin(少陽人) and Soeumin(少陰人) according to appearance, moral nature and characteristic of constitutional symptoms, and it is a medical science to study about different treatment for each constitution. In Sasang Constitutional Medicine, diagnosis of constitution was so important that we had the necessity of studying constitutional diagnostic method which had presented wholly and intuitively in Dongyi Soose Bowon(東醫壽世保元) with objective and analytic thinking. There were several attempts to classify Sasang Constitutional Types through morphological investigation of each parts of body. The one of them was to use measuring the body. In this study, we purposed to make clear whether the analysis of fingerprints and palm, one of the physical anthropologic methods would be helpful to classify Sasang Constitution. 2. Method : After practicing Questionnaire I and QSCC(Questionnaire of Sasang Constitution) II from 347 healthy Korean adults(242 males and 106 females), we analyzed fingerprints and palm prints of 208 people(142 males and 66 females) who were classified same constitution from two questionnaires. We analyzed the types of fingerprints according to the number of triradius and counted the number of dermal ridges from fingerprint center to triradius. We found triradius in the lower part of each finger and analyzed the courses of dermal ridges and counted the number of dermal ridges between each triradius. We mesured angle atd, and then researched relationship between fingerprints, palm prints and Sasang Constitution. 3. Result and Conclusion : The results of Sasang Constitution analysis of 208 Korean adults showed 76 Taeumin(36.5%), 81 Soeumin(39.0%) and 51 Soyangin(24.5%). The analytic results of fingerprints and palm prints are as follows : The types of fingerprints were helpful to sort Taeumin and the types of palm prints were helpful to sort Soyangin and Soeumin especially. In addition, the number of dermal ridges in fingerprints and palm prints were helpful to sort Soyangin. Fingerprints and palm prints have characteristic in each constitutions, so the investigation of fingerprints and palm prints seems to helpful to classify Sasang Constitution. We are planning to report fingerprints and palm prints of more subjects.

1. Objects The base of classification of Sasang Constitution was the different congenital formation of organs such as lungs, spleen, liver, kidneys, and it was expanded from the viscera region of lungs, spleen, liver, kidneys to the body shape of trunk. The researched about body shape of Sasang Constitution have had points of issues which derived by measurement with hands. But this study was measured the characteristics of body shape putting in importance of anatomical position with the computerized 3-Dimension scanner, which minimized the errors of measurement, and it was abled the cubic measurement such as volume, area of cross section as well as round length. 2. Materials & Method The examinee was healthy male 40 persons and female 20 persons from 20's to 40's, who was diagnosed by the specialist of Sasang Constitutional Medicine. The body shape was measured round length, area of cross section, and volume of 31 anatomical points and the 25 hypothesis with the Rapid 3D Color Scanner Model 3030 RGB/PS. And the characteristics of each constitution's body shape was derived. 3. Results & Concousion In female, Taeumin had the largest trunk and Soeumin had the smallest trunk compared to other constitution, but Soyangin had only the smallest neck. Soeumin has the smallest round length of nipple and the
, and Soyangin has the smallest breadth of ASIS. Soyangin had the smallest volume from thyroid bone to the highest points of armpits and from sternum to nipple. Taeumin had the largest volume from sternum to the
and from sternum to xiphoid process. In male, Taeumin had the largest trunk and Soeumin had the smallest trunk from the level of thyroid bone to ASIS. Soyangin has the longest distance and Soeumin has the shortest distance from nipple to the lowest of breast. Taeumin had the largest volume of trunk and Soeumin had the smallest volume of trunk. In the ration of four-Cho, Taeumin had the longest distance from the highest points of armpits to nipple and Soyangin had the shortest distance of that. Soyangin had the smallest ratio of the height of upper middle cho. Soeumin had the smallest ratio from the
to navel among trunk. In the correlation among the four Cho, Taeumin had the negative correlation between the Upper-Cho and the Lower-Middle-Cho significantly.

Background and Purpose : I intended to be helpful to understand constitutional symptoms of a disease and an application of the prescription through a clinical study of Taeumin Chongsim Yonja Tang. 2. Methods : I studied 125 patients(62 men and 63 women) treated with Taeumin Chongsim Yonja Tang in constitutional clinic of Dongguk Pundang Oriental Hospital. And then I investigated the characteristics of Chongsim Yonja Tang treated patients, remedial values and side effects. 3. Results : Taeumin Chongsim Yonja Tang was used in all age groups both men and women. There were 60 kinds of chief complaints including numbness of hands and feet, headache and fatigue etc. The distributions of remedial values were slightly improved(60.8%), much improved(15.2%), no improved(24.0%) and there was no aggravated patient. Using the prescription, mostly I prescribed only Taeumin Chongsim Yonja Tang without any changing, and added 2-3 herbs to the prescription according to the symptoms of a disease. Taeumin Chongsim Yonja Tang was affected in remedial values by the period of sufferring from illness, treatment and medication. Side effects were diarrhea, indigestion and so on.
The Bibliographical Investigation of the Vernalizatin of Barley
Kim, Jong-dug ; Koh, Byung-hee ;
Journal of Sasang Constitutional Medicine, volume 10, issue 1, 1998, Pages 253~267
'Maek(麥)' which means a barley at present is used as a general name of the kinds of 'Maek(麥)' including barley, what, rye, and so on. However 'Maek(麥)' had meant a wheat when the letter of 'Maek(麥)' had been created at the beginning. And gradually 'Maek(麥)' has been used as a word for the both meaning of a wheat and barley, and now a days become a word only for the meaning of a barley. Therefore 'Mo-Maek' should be translated into 'a wheat and barley', although it is translated into only a barley. In Korea, according to 'Nong-ga-wol-ryung(農家月令)' of Ko, Sang-un(高尙顔) in 1619, the vernalization had been utilized practically 300 years earlier than the Western countries. It is based on a concept of the oriental medicine that a 'Maek(麥)' of the spring seedtime, which keeps the only warmth('Won-yeol-ji-ki(溫熱之氣) (陽氣)' during the growth period in spring-summer time, has less vigorous than a 'Maek(麥)' of the autumn seedtime, which keeps the cold, hot, warmth equally 'Yeol-won-yang-han-ji-ki(溫熱凉寒之氣) (陽氣+陰氣)' during the growth period in the four seasons. If a autumn seedtime barley but which is actually not sowed on time in autumn season is sowed in the spring after the treatment of cold condition (陰氣 autumn-winter condition) artificially, it would be avoided from the abnormal phenomenon that a barley could not come to fruition in case of non-treated seed. Thus as a result of this the agricultural productivity has been able to be improved. An barley is recommended as a food for Um-chung-ji-ki(陰淸之氣) to be served as Bo-myung-ji-ju(保命之主) to be Soyangin. And a wheat which is used as an ingredient of bread because of its expanding feature is a suitable food for Ho-san-ji-ki(呼散之氣) to be served as Bo-myung-ji-ju(保命之主)to the Taeumin.

Journal of Sasang Constitutional Medicine, volume 10, issue 1, 1998, Pages 269~284
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of ILIB(Intravenous Laser Irradiation of blood) on Meridian-Heart Circulation CMP and Hyperlipidemia. Circulatory symptom of 20 patients was treated with ILIB. After 10 times' treatment, changes of total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, triglyceride and Meridian-Heart Circulation CMP value were observed. The results were as follows : 1. In observation of Meridian-Heart Circulation CMP value, significant increase was observed in both pre-ID generation and post-ID generation. So, distinctive observation between pre-ID generation and post-ID generation became not relatively significant. 2. In observation of Meridian-Heart Circulation CMP value, significant increase was observed in both left and right. So, distinctive observation between left and right became not relatively significant. 3. In observation of Meridian-Heart CMP value, significant increase was not observed in control group, but significant increase close to normal value was observed in treatment group after treatment of Intravenous He-Ne Laser Irradiation. 4. In observation of Meridian-Circulation CMP value, significant increase was not observed in control group, but significant increase close to normal value was observed in treatment group after treatment of Intravenous He-Ne Laser Irradiation. 5. In concentration of plasma total cholesterol and plasma triglyceride, significant decrease was not observed in control group, but significant increase was observed in treatment group after treatment of Intravenous He-Ne laser Irradiation. 6. Significant concentration change of plasma HDL-cholesterol was not observed in both control group and treatment group. From above results, it was thought that Intravenous He-Ne Laser Irradiation was significant effect on heart circulatory system in human body.
Effects of Yuldahansotang(熱多寒少湯) water extract on Blood Pressure, Regional Cerebral Blood Flow and Pial Arterial Diameter
Choi, Yong-joon ; Kim, Kyung-yo ; Han, Jong-hyun ; Kang, Sung-yong ;
Journal of Sasang Constitutional Medicine, volume 10, issue 1, 1998, Pages 285~293
Yuldahansotang(YH) has been used in Sasang(四象) constitution medicine for many years as a therapeutic agent for cerebral disease. The effect of YH on the vascular system is not known. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of YH on blood pressure, regional cerebral blood flow(rCBF) and pial arterial diameter of rats. 1. Blood pressure decreased by YH in rats. 2. rCBF was increased by YH in a dose-dependent manner. 3. Pretreatment with propranolol, methylene blue and indomethacin significantly inhibited YH induced increase in rCBF. 5. Blood pressure increased by Radix Puerariae(RP) and Radix Ligustici Tenuissimae(RLT) but Radix Scutellariae(RC) decreased blood pressure in rats. 6. rCBF was increased by RP and RLT in a dose-dependent manner but RC decreased low dosage, and RC increased high dosage. 7. Pial arterial diameter was increased by YH in a dose-dependent manner. 8. Pretreatment with propranolol significantly inhibited the increased in pial arterial diameter induced by YH. These results suggest that YH causes a diverse response of blood pressure, regional cerebral blood flow(rCBF) and pial arterial diameter. The increase in rCBF is also mediated by prostaglandins, cyclic GMP and adrenergic
receptor and the increase in pial arteral diameter is mediated by adrenergic
A Study of relationship between Longevity and Sasang Constitution
Lee, Sea-yun ; Kim, Dal-rae ;
Journal of Sasang Constitutional Medicine, volume 10, issue 1, 1998, Pages 295~309
The purpose of this paper was to investigated to the relationship between longevity and Sasang Constitution. The investigation of this paper is composed of 4 parts. First part is investigated to the distribution of sex constitution and constitutional form. Second part is the distribution of the special of body quality(blood pressure, Pulse, Respiration, heredity, stool frequency) and the disease. Third part is the relation of the longevity reason(diet, alcohol intake, smoking). Fourth part is the relationship between the QSCC II and longevity reason. The results were as follows : 1. In case of a macrobian, Soyangin is much more in constitution. 2. A macrobian is generally short and thin. 3. About the macrobian's strength of heredity, there is no any meaningful conclusion, but more studying relationship between heredity and longevity is needed. 4. A macrobian has normal condition in blood pressure, pulse and feces condition. 5. In case of macrobian, the portion of a light eater, non-smoker, and abstainer is high, they like warm food. 6. A macrobian who is active and diligent has high accomplishment and good sociality. Considering above conclusion, a macrobian is related to Soyangin in characteristic of constitution. In the future, more studying is needed whether the macrobian has kept their lives with their unique preservation of health or not.
A Bibliographic Study on the Theory of the 'Qi-Pum(氣稟)'
Kim, Hyuk ; Kim, Dal-rae ;
Journal of Sasang Constitutional Medicine, volume 10, issue 1, 1998, Pages 311~341
The objective of this article is to induce that the conception of 'Qi-jul(氣質) and Qi-pum(氣稟)' was introduced to the Sasang(四象) Constitutional Medicine from bibliographic study on the theory of 'Qi-pum(氣稟)'. The conclusions summerized as followings. 1. In the oriental medicine, qualitative difference of 'zheng-qi(正氣)' among the individuals, the opposing power against a disease, is regarded as constitution. Having been used as 'nature(素)', 'quality(質)' and 'character(氣質)' in the oriental medical book, the word of 'Che-Jil(體質)' was used in good earnest at the end of 'Qing(情)' dynasty. 2. The nature(性) is divided into two, original nature(本然之性) and charicteristic nature(氣質之性) in the 'New confucianism(新儒學)' and the former means a principle(理), is a pure and good thing and used as a conception of universality, the latter is a principle of character and a imperfect imitation of principle(理). 3. It was repeatedly confirmed that 'Qi-jil and Qi-pum' meant the difference among the individuals by the dispute of 'Li-Qi(理氣)' caused by Lee Hwang(李滉) and Lee Yi(李耳) and by that of 'Ho-Rak(湖洛)' in the Ch'o-son(朝鮮) dynasty. 4. Han Sok-Ji, based on Meng-Zi(孟子)'s doctrine that man's inborn nature is good, criticized the theory of 'Qi-pum' which was 'Zhu-Zi(朱子)'s opinion and his opinion about the life(命) was thought to clue to the classification of the 'Sasang(四象)' invented by Lee Je-Ma as Park Se-Dang's theory that everyone has common nature but has different life(命). 5. By introducing the theory of 'Qi-pum' and the conception of life(命) which was understood as a special character by Han Sok-Ji and Park Se-Dang to Sa-sang constitutional medicine, Lee Je-Ma explained the reason why each man who was classified four constitutions, 'Taiyang'(太陽), 'Taiyin'(太陰), 'Shaoyang'(少陽), 'Shaoyin'(少陰), had the different formation of the visceral department(臟局).
