A Research on the Classification of Herbal Medicines based on the Sasang Constitution (Taeumin and Taeyangin Part)
Kim, Kyung-Yo ; Kim, Jong-Yol ;
Journal of Sasang Constitutional Medicine, volume 14, issue 1, 2002, Pages 1~9
We analyzed 44 and 16 types of herbal medicines for Taeumin and Taeyangin, clinically applied in Dongyisoosebowon. In order to discover the standard of herbal classification for the Sasang constitutions, four concepts of Sasang Medicine were applied. These included 'Sadangron (theory of four groups)', 'Seungganggaehap (ascending-descending and gathering-dispersing)', 'Pyorihanyoul (exterior-interior and hot-cold)',and 'Hyungchiaekmi (fragrance, smell, bodily fluid and taste)'. According to these analyzing methods of herbal properties, we have reached the following conclusions: Herbal medicines for 'Taeumin' are characterized by opening energetics that reinforce dispersing Qi. The 'Exterior cold disease' is treated with herbs that ventilate the lungs and disperse dampness in three ways: by moistening the lungs, by releasing exterior, and by resolving dampness. The 'Interior heat disease' is treated with herbs that clear the liver and disperse heat in two ways. One by clearing liver heat through dispersing damp-heat of the small intestine and the other by opening orifices. Herbal medicines for Taeyangin are characterized by those that gather energy inward. They include herbs that treat beriberi, dystrophy of the extremities and vomiting, as well as, fish, shellfish, fruits and vegetable.

1. Purpose This Study is intended to catch the expasion of theory of Sasang Constitutional Medicine through comparision DongyiSooseBowon Chopanbon with DongyiSooseBowon Chobonguen and DongyiSooseBowon Gabobon. 2. Method I compared the Soeumin's prescriptions and medications of DongyiSooseBowon Chopanbon with those of DongyiSooseBowon Chobonguen and DongyiSooseBowon Gabobon. 3. Result and conclusion 1. The Soeumin's meducations used in the prescriptions of chobonguen are 44 and those of Gabobon are 47, those of chopanbon are 46 2. Soeumin;s Medications of the same kind in Chobonguen's precriptions and Gabobon's and Chopanbon's are twenty-five;like Daejo(大棗), Jinpi(陳皮), Gamcho(甘草), etc. and these medications are the princople in soeumin's disease. 3. Soeumin's Prescriptions of the same name in Chobonguen's prescriptions and Gabobon's and Chopanbon's are two;Gwakhanggeunggisan(藿香精氣散) and Bogungikgitang(補中益氣湯). These two prescriptions are correspond to the prescriptions those were recorded in Song-won-myuong Soeumin's princple prescription of experience(宋元明 少陰人經驗行用要藥). 4. Soeumin's Prescriptions of the same name in Chobonguen's precriptions and Gabobon's are two;Gwakhanggeunggisan(藿香精氣散) and Bogungikgitang(補中益氣湯). Chobonguen's precriptions were composed of Old prescriptions(古方) except the medications those were considered of wrong Sang Constitutional medications. 5. Soeumin's Prescriptions of the same name in Gabobon's prescriptions and Chopanbon's are nine and except Padudan(巴豆丹) have differences in the kind of medications and quantites. This fact shows that Dongmu(東武) roform the Sasnag Constitutional prescriptions continuously. 6. As this, Dongmu(東武) selected Sasang Constitutional prescription and medication in detail as he has the more experince of treatment.

Dongyi Soose Bowon
published in 1901(In Edition) 2. Methods Comparing with
Dongyi Soose Bowon
written in 1894(Old edition) and
Dongyi Soose Bowon
published in 1901(In Edition) we found the change of Dong-mu's conceptio ns about constitutional disease 3. Result 1) In
, diseases were classified 'Oi-Gam(外感)‘, ’Nae-sang(內傷)‘, ’Ok-roi(牢獄)‘. ’Wi-gyoung(危傾)‘. In
ordinary symptoms was more impotant than disease, and good life style was emplasized for health 2) In
Dongyi Soose Bowon
written in 1894(Old edition), diseases were classified 'Oi-Gam(外感)‘, ’Nae-sang(內傷)‘. siseases from exterior causes was classified into 'Oi-gam-noi-chu-byoung(外傷腦?頁病)’, and diseases from interior causes was classified into 'Nae-sang-wi-wan-byoung(內觸胃脘病).‘ Herbal medication yet was't used by Disease 3) In
Dongyi Soose Bowon
published in 1901(In Edition), diseases was classified not by causes of disease but by mechanism and symptom of disease, so into Exterior-cold disease' and 'Interior-hot disease'. Herbal medication was used by pattern of Disease. 4) Conception of constitutional diseases was gradualy complished through edition.

1. Background and Purpose At the year of 2000, the society of sasang constitutional medicine acqired
HamsanSachon DongyiSuseBowon GoboGubon
which is presumed as the copy of
. According to Lee Sung-Su who is the great-grandson of DongMu's older brother,
HamsanSachon DongyiSuseBowon GoboGubon
was worked by Lee Jin-Yoon who is the grandson of DongMu's older brother and it was copied by Han Min-Gab and now is owned by Lee Sung-Su who is the son of Lee Jin-Yoon. 2. Method This paper was written in order to understand the character of the discourse on the constitutional symp toms and diseases of
HamsanSachon DongyiSuseBowon GoboGubon
. 3. Result and Conclusion 1) Each constitutional symptoms and diseases is classed as that of exterior and interior and then classsed again as that of exterior's exterior, exterior's interior, interior's exterior and interior's interior. 2) The degree of completion is high at the chapter of Soeumin and Soyangin comparing with that of Taeeumin and Taeyangin which don't exist as the contrasted explanation. 3) Soeumin's exterior-disease is divided Taiyang(太陽) and Yangmyung(陽明)'s disease by the sweating, that's interior-disease is same to Sinchukbon(辛丑本). BaboBon already have the concept of UlKwang(鬱狂) and mangYang(亡陽), so the discourse on the constitutional symptoms and diseases of Soyangin is early establish comparing with other constitution. 4) The Cold and Hot, the constitutional symptoms and diseases, the disease theory of Soyangin can be accessible to opposite side of Soeumin's that. The disease of exterior's exterior is only explained abdominal pain and diarrhea without the concept of Mangeum(亡陰) disease, but at the time of SinchukBon the concept of Mangeum-disease is invented. 5) There is many different with SinchukBon that the classification of symptoms and diseases of Taeeumin, and not mentioned the physiology and pathlogy of the airs and fluids metabolism. 6) Healthy Energy(保命之主) show us that JungKi(正氣) is key-point of the utility of the symptoms and diseases.
The Body Measuring Method to Classify Sasang Constitutions
Koh, Byung-Hee ; Song, Il-Byung ; Huh, Mahn-Hoi ;
Journal of Sasang Constitutional Medicine, volume 14, issue 1, 2002, Pages 51~66
The main purpose of this study is to differentiate Sasang Constitutions of men and women by measuring 5 parts of the body. By the definitions about Four Chos(四焦) in
The Discourse on Viscera and Bowels(臟腑論)
, the body is divided into four parts and sets up the five borderlines. They are Top-line, Bosom-line, Stomach-line, Navel-line and Bottom-line. Top-line(第一線) is the horizontal distance between Rt. & Lt. Coracoid processes passing through the acupuncture point CV-22(天突穴) or the horizontal distance between Rt. & Lt. beginning points of Axillary lines. Bosom-line(第二線) is the horizontal distance passing through Rt.& Lt. Nipples. Stomach-line(第三線) is the horizontal distance passing through Rt.& Lt. acupuncture point ST-19(不容穴). Navel-line(第四線) is the horizontal distance passing through the navel(CV-8; 神闕穴) and the acupuncture point ST-25(天樞穴). Bottom-line(第五線) is the horizontal distance between Rt. & Lt. Anterior Superior Iliac Spine(ASIS). The measured numerical values of Five Lines are the most important factors to classify the Four Constitutions(Taeyangin, Taeumin, Soyangin, Soeumin). Among the five lines, Stomach-line(Middle-line) is the base line to decide Yin and Yang. As a result, I could differentiate the four Constitutions as follows. 1. Taeyangin's Top-line is more than 36cm long. Top-line is the longest. Bottom-line is the shortest. The length-difference between Top-line and Bottom-line is more or less 10cm long. 2. In case of Taeumin, Navel-line is the longest. The numerical values of Middle and Bottom lines are almost the same or Bottom-line is shorter than Middle-line by 1 or 2 cm long. In some special case, the five lines are all the same and the body just looks like a log. 3. In case of Soyangin, just like Taeyangin, Top-line is the longest. Bottom-line is the shortest. The length of Top-line is ranged between 30cm to 35cm long. From Top-line to Bottom-line, the length gradually diminishes each by 2cm: for example, 34-32-30-28-26. 4. In case of Soeumin, the longest one is Bottom-line. Specially, Navel-line is shorter than Middle-line. Bottom-line is longer than the Middle.

Jowiseungcheongtang(JST) has been in Sasang constitution medicine for many years as a therapeutic agent for cerebral disease. But the effect of Jowiseungcheongtang(JST) on neurotoxicity is not known. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of Jowiseungcheongtang(JST) on the hippocampal cell injured by Xanthine Oxidase/Hypoxanthine. The results were as follows: 1. XO/HX decreased the survival rate of the cultured hippocampal cells on NR assay and MTT assay. 2. JST water extract have efficacy of decreasing a amount of lipid peroxidation increased by XO/HX in cultured hippocampal cells. 3. JST water extract have efficacy of increasing DNA synthesis decreased by XO/HX in cultured hippocampal cells. From the above results, It is concluded that JST has marked efficacy in preventing cultured hippocampal cells from the damages by XO/HX.

To evaluate the effect of Yuldahansotang(YHT) water extract on cultured hippocampal cell was inhibited by hydrogen peroxide, MTT assay, NR assay, Neurofilament enzymeimmuno assay and DNA synthesis assay were carried out after the cultured hippocampal cells were preincubated with various concentrations of YHT water extract for 3 hours prior to exposure of hydrogen peroxide. The results obtained were as follows: 1. Hydrogen Peroxide decreased the survival rate of the cultured hippocampal cells on NR assay and MIT assay. 2. YHT water extract have efficacy of increasing a amount of neurofilament decreased by hydrogen peroxide in cultured hippocampal cells. 3. YHT water extract have efficacy of increasing DNA synthesis decreased by hydrogen peroxide in cultured hippocampal cells. From above the results, It is concluded that YHT has marked efficacy in preventing for the damages by hydrogen peroxide.

Journal of Sasang Constitutional Medicine, volume 14, issue 1, 2002, Pages 90~99
Exact constitutional classification is especially important in Sasang Constitutional Medicine. Therefore, most studies on the Sasang Constitutional medicine have been focused on how accurately to classify Sasang Constitution. Recently, there have been reported on the studies about relationship between genetic polymorphism and Sansang Constitution. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether there is any correlation between Sasang Constitution and HLA type. Polymorphism of HLA genes have been known to be important role in transplantation, autoimmune disease, immune response against infection. This study was concentrated on a relationship of HLA-A, -C, -DR, and -DQ types with Sasang Constitution. Results are as following. 1. In the case of HLA-A, there was no significant difference. Only
has a tendency which Soyangin is less frequent than Soeumin and Taeumin. 2. In the case of HLA-C, there was significant difference between Sasang Constitution and HLA type. In persons having
allele, Taeumin is more frequent than Soyangin and Soeumin. On the other hand, Soyangin is more frequent than Taeumin and Soeumin in
has a tendency which Soeumin is more frequent than Soyangin and Taeumin. 3. In. the case of HLA-DR type and HLA-DQ type, there was no significant difference among Sansang Constitution. On the study of correlation between Sasang Constitution and HLA type, there was little statistical significance and tendency. This study was the first try about presentation of frequency on the HLA alleles corresponding with Sasang Constitution. I think that more study on the relationship between HLA gene and Sasang Constitution is necessary by method of large case research and various statistical analysis.

Journal of Sasang Constitutional Medicine, volume 14, issue 1, 2002, Pages 100~111
1. The Purpose of study An experimental study has done to examine the effect of defense on gastric mucosal damage of Jowesungcheong-tang. 2. The Material and Method of study Mice had intragastric injected with JST extract before indome thacin treatment which induces hemorrh age erosion artificially. General morphology, infiltrative cell in mucosa, the distribution of UEA-I, COX-1, MAC-1. ICAM, and Apoptotic cell were objected (Ahhreviation) JST :Jowesungcheong-tang, UEA-I : ulex europaeus agglutinin-I, COX-1: cyclooxyhenase-1, ICAM : intercellular adhesion molecule-1, GPE : Gastropathy elicitated mice 3. The results and Conclusions of study 1) The degree of hemorrhage erosion in GPE-group had increased conspicuously in gastric gland proper. JST -group were the same as normal 2) The noticeable increase of granular lecocytes and lymphocytes in GEP-group were seen, but in JST group, the configuration is decreased 3) The decrease of UEA-I positive reacted cells, COX-1, surface epithelial cells and the increase of MAC-l positive cells, ICAM-l positive cells had shown in GPE-group, but in JST-group UEA-I positive cells, COX-1 surface epithelial cells were in creased and MAC-1 positive cells, ICAM-l positive cells were decreased than GPE-group. 4) A number of apoptotic cells were distributed in hemorrhage erosion. The remarkable decrease of apoptotic cells were shown in JST-group.

Glutathione S-transferase polymorphisms (GST) were examined in 98 cases with cerebrovascular disease (CVD) to test the hypothesis that GST polymorphisms confer a risk to an individual to develop CVD. Tobacco smoke is a major cause of both cancer and vascular disease. We therefore were stratified the subjects with CVD for smoking status, and then examined whether polymorphisms in this detoxification enzyme gene, GST, influence risk of CVD. Neither GSTM1 nor GSTT1 genotypes in the CVD group was significantly different from the control group (n=230), even in smokers. We attempted the combined analyses for GSTM1 and GSTT1 genotypes in CVD for smoking status. No significant association observed between the combined genotypes and CVD. We also classified the subjects and control group into four types according to Sasang Constitutional Medicine, Korean Traditional Oriental Medicine, and investigated the association among GST genotypes, CVD, and Sasang constitutional classification. Our observations do not confirm the effect of the GSTM1 and GSTT1 genotypes as a risk factor for CVD, even in smokers. Furthermore, we first attempted to evaluate the efficacy of Sasang Constitutional Medicine, and to find an association with CVD.

Journal of Sasang Constitutional Medicine, volume 14, issue 1, 2002, Pages 132~139
The correlation between angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) polymorphisms and cerebral infarction (CI) has been controversial. Such controversy may be due to different classifications of cerebrovascular diseases and ethnic differences. I studied the correlation between ACE genotypes and CI patients by case-control study in the Korean population. I also classified CI patients and control group into four types according to Sasang constitutional medicine. Furthermore I investigated the correlation among ACE genotypes, CI and Sasang constitutions. The frequencies of D allele were 0.32 in subjects with CI and 0.40 in the control group without CI (X2=0.128, p=0.720). In patients with CI, the frequency of Taeumins, one of four Sasang constitutional types, was significantly higher than that in controls (X2=15.425, p<0.00l). I did not find any correlation between ACE polymorphism and CI in Koreans. However, there were significant differences in allele frequencies between Koreans and Europeans, while similarities were shown to those of Japanese and Chinese populations.
