The Role and Treatment Mind of Sasang Constitutional Medicine in Human Genome Age
Song, Il-Byung ;
Journal of Sasang Constitutional Medicine, volume 15, issue 2, 2003, Pages 1~8
1. Objects of Research This research is purposed to find role and treatment mind of Sasang constitutional medicine in human genome age, through summarizing recognition of human and etiology. treatment on diseases proposed in Sasang constitutional medicine 2. Methods of Research It was researched as bibliologically with Dong-mu's chief medical writings such as
Dongyi Soose Bowon Sasang Chongyun(東醫壽世保元四象草本卷
. 3. Results and Conclusions 1. The outlook on human of Sasang Constitutional Medicine was completed in the base on Confusianism and it recognized that human is consisted with congenital element based on 'Human nature-shape' and acquired element based on Knowledge-Acting. Dong-mu emphasised acquired element than inborn element. 2. Sasang Constitutional Medicine is thought that we ran overcome inborn limitation of each constitution through moral culture of aposteriori Knowledge-Acting. and that self-correction is methods which is applied to treatment of disease recovering Essential Qi of each constitution with moral culture of personality 3. Sasang Constitutional Medicine is recognizing Essential Qi by main standard that foretell prognosis of disease and emphasize recovery of Essential Qi through self-correction than way of 'Assisting-Good Qi' and 'Removig-Bad Qi' in treatment of disease. 4. Self-correction can be divided into non-herbal self-correction and herbal self-correction. Non-herbal self-correction is to control greed by aposteriori Knowledge-Acting and herbal self-correction is to recover Essential Qi by herb. 5. It is thought that the present constitutional disease is consisted by accumulating life habit nature of a disease of ordinary times, and Sasang Constitutional Medicine that present constitutional disease is treated through administration of life habit nature of a disease of ordinary times in Sasang Constitutional Medicine. 6. Treatment mind to correct oneself into Golden Mean through controlling Knowledge-Acting in Sasang Constitutional Medicine may get into important treatment guide of gene medicine age.

A study on food to help digestion for Taeumin ; lotus, adlay, ginko nut, chest nut
Kim, Jong-Dug ;
Journal of Sasang Constitutional Medicine, volume 15, issue 2, 2003, Pages 24~37
Sasang Constitutional Medicine, which argues that physiology, pathology, diagnosis, medical cure depend on individual's constitution, is different from a previous traditional oriental medicine. Recently the idea of fitted medicine, made by concepts based on genome project, is similar to constitution of Sasang Constitutional Medine in that both of them take the individual difference Into consideration. Sasang Constitutional Medicine is able to contribute to explanation of function of genes, because the same food acts differently on individual's constitution in Sasang Constitutional Medicine In 'Dongmu Yugo Yaksungga(동무유고 약성가)' it is said that A lotus, adlay, ginko nut, chest nut open stomach-Qi of Taeumin, help to digest, and give a better appetite. But this is different from the explanations of a previous traditional oriental medicine. All of them help to digest of Taeumin, but a adlay, ginko nut, chest nut distinguishing clearness-unclearness(淸濁) and spouting unclearness(濁)-Qi, has commonness of promoting digestion. But in the early days, a ginko nut is thought to be helpful to digest, the latter days, it is used for Mahwangjungchuntang which cures breast-stomachache(胸腹痛)and asthma(喘氣 哮喘病); It shows the change of recognition.
A Literature Study on the Construction of Sasang Constitutional Medicine on the basis of Channel-qi theory
Kim, Sung-Chul ;
Journal of Sasang Constitutional Medicine, volume 15, issue 2, 2003, Pages 38~57
Objective: The purpose of this study is to discourse upon that the construction of Sasang Constitutional Medicine has a significant property of Oriental Medicine by explaining the disparity of the viscera and bowels of four constitutions through the special quality of ying-qi and wei-qi circulating in human body on the basis of the channel-qi theory of
Conclusion: 1. Primordial-qi is the congenital essence inherited from the parents and pectoral-qi, ying-qi and wei-qi is the acquired essence derived from the food and air that human eat and breathe. 2. Ying-qi and wei-qi circulates in the meridian system by the strength and pushing of pectoral-qi under the influence of primordial-qi 3. Ying-qi, by the pushing function of pectoral-qi, determines large lung-small liver and small lung-large liver according to the innate quantity of qi and blood. 4. Wei-qi, by the pushing function of pectoral-qi, determines large spleen-small kidney and small spleen-large kidney according to the innate quantity of qi and blood. 5. The heart in the theory of the meridian system's fetus-nourishing and Sasang Constitutional Medicine is involved in the formation of viscera and bowels as governing human body and seven emotions. 6. It is considered that Taiyang person and Taiyin person have the constitution influenced by ying-qi. 7. It is considered that Shaoyang person and Shaoyin person have the constitution influenced by wei-qi. The inquiry into several literatures on the basis of the channel-qi theory of
leads us to the idea that the construction of Sasang Constitotional Medicine is another well-implied representation of the property of the meridian doctrine in the existing Oriental Medicine. And it is considered that the more continual studies of literatures and Sasang Constitutional Medicine Acupuncture are necessary henceforth.

The internet contains enormous informations in various fields and therefore called 'sea of information'. It helps obtain quickly health related information including 'constitutional medicine'. But a lack of evaluation and oversight appear to result in inaccurate and misleading. So by using a series of equipment and www.naver.com, www.yahoo.co.kr, www.empas.com, the typical search engine for internet, the sites are researched by keyword 'constitutional medicine'. The results were classified into six groups as follows; The sites about pratitional Oriental Medical Doctor, private home page, advertisements of goods for health, associations of constitutional medicine, astrology or reading fortune, and etc. The internet is a useful tool that gives informations of health, easy and speedy, to users like as doctors and patients. But accuracy or reliabillity of this informations is mistrust. Especially informations of health are connected to safty of life directly, they must be verificated by the specialist and a criterion, that evaluate the sites it self, should be established.
A Statstical Analysis of the Question Categories concerning 'Total Physiognomy'
Kim, Hong-Gie ; Kim, Jong-Yeol ;
Journal of Sasang Constitutional Medicine, volume 15, issue 2, 2003, Pages 64~74
Objectives : To evaluate the properness and effectiveness of the question categories concerning 'total physiognomy', used in Iksan Wonkwang Oriental Medicine. Methods: We statistically analyzed data from those 1335 patients focussing on 'relative discrimination ability' to sasang constructions and 'response ratio'. Patients included in this research are only those who had been well treated in Iksan Wonkwang Oriental Medicine during the Period of three years from 2000 to 2002. The data are obtained through the electronic chart developed by Kim Jong-Yeol, and analyzed using the statistical Package SPSS. Results: The first category for discriminating Taeum type, 'heavy and looking steady', has more discriminating power and effectiveness among women than men, and especially in wemen with an age of 21 or more. The second category for discriminating Soeum type, 'delicate and modest', is more discriminating and effective among men than women, and mostly among men with ages 21-40. The third category for Soyang type, 'fast and brave', is almost equally discriminating and effective to both women and men, especially among women with ages 40 or less and among men with ages 21 or more. Finally, the forth category for discriminating Taeyang type, 'progressive', is neither discriminating nor effective among most the women than men in all age groups. Conclusions: The definition of 'relative discriminating power of constitution' and 'response ratio' are well evaluating the properness and effectiveness of the question categories regarding 'total physiognomy'. The first category is most discriminating and effective among women with ages 20 or less, and the second among 21-40 year old men, the third among women with ages 40 or less and among men with ages 21 or over. The forth category is neither discriminating nor effective.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo(BPPV) is the most common peripheral vestivular disorder that is featured with paroxysmal vertigo caused by position changes. For a long time, it has been believed that the rendition is caused by inorganic particles in the cupula of the posterior semicircular canal. In the book 'DongyiSuseBowon(東醫壽世保元)', vertigo has been mentioned So-Yang-Sang-Pung syndrome and fever-aversive syndrome for Yin deficiency of So-Yang-In. Hyeong-Bang-Do-Jeok-San(荊防導赤散) is used at So-Yang-Sang-Pung and Gyeol-Hyung syndrome of So-Yang-In. Three patients in the cases have been suffered from vertigo, nausea and hot flushes etc. These patients were classified as So-Yang-In by features in the face, bodyshape and personality patterns. All of them have been improved in vertigo and other symptoms with Hyeong-Bang-Do-Jeok-San for a few days. The result showed that So-Yang-In Hyeong-Bang-Do-Jeok-San was effective on vertigo and other symptoms of BPPV patients.

Journal of Sasang Constitutional Medicine, volume 15, issue 2, 2003, Pages 124~128
Background: Sasang Constitutional Medicine (SCM) is a component of Korean traditional medicine that classifies humans into four categories, according to their constitution (Taeyangin, Taeumin, Soyangin and Soeumin). We are unaware of previous assessments of SCM in non-Asian race groups. Objectives: To quantify body composition components in three race groups and to determine whether SCM has an independent effect on body composition components. Design: A cross-sectional evaluation of 76 adults (28 Caucasian, 21 African-American, 27 Asian). Body composition was estimated using dual energy x-ray absorptiometry. Results: SCM component had a significant effect on weight, fat, and lean mass regardless of race group (p <0.001).

Diabetic nephropathy is defined that renal glomeruluses are damaged by diabetes melitus and proteins that are not excreted to urine normally are exhausted, or do not excrete waste matter to urine, so-called chronic renal failure state. Clinical stage is explained divided 5. If reached 4 or 5 stage, overt proteinuria is occurred to clinical nephropathy, and hypoalbuminemia, azotemia, hypertension, and edema become serious. Concept about edema is differing comprehension about mechanism of a disease, and treatment methodaccording to Sasang Constitution in Sasang Constitutional Medicine. I treated edemtous Soyangin(少陽人) patient with Dojeokgangkitang(導赤降氣湯) who diagnosed as diabetic nephropathy and wrongly treated in Soeumin. I have got good results, so I do case study.

The purpose of this study is to examine the toxic effects caused by glucose oxidase (GO) and the effects of Hyungbangjihwangtang (HJT) water extracts on the treatment of the toxic effects. For this purpose, experiments with the cultured hippocampal cells from new born mice were done. The results of these experiments were as follows. 1. GO decreased the survival rate of the cultured cells on MTT assay and NR assay. 2. HJT has the efficacy of decreasing the lipid peroxidation. 3. HJT has the efficacy of increasing the amount of neurofilaments. 4. HJT has the efficacy of decreasing the activation of protein kinase C(PKC). From the above results, it is concluded that HJT has marked efficacy as a treatment for the damages caused by the GO-mediated oxidative stress. Further clinical study of this pharmacological effects of H]T should be completed.
Inhibitory effects of Yangdokbackhotang on the Immune Hypersensitive Reaction in skin transplant mice
Park, Seong-Sik ; Jeon, Jun-Young ;
Journal of Sasang Constitutional Medicine, volume 15, issue 2, 2003, Pages 151~165
Objective: This study was carried out to evaluate the inhibitory effect on immme hypersensitive reaction by Yangdokbackhotang extract. methods: To study, We divided 4 weeks old rats into three groups of 20, which are the constrasive group with nothing treated, the skin transplated only, and the Yangdokbackhotang extract fed before skin transplantation. And did the experiment. Results: 1. The ear swelling in mice treated with YB noticeably decreased than only DNCB treated mice. 2. As shown in Table3, also results in a significant decrease of YB group than ST group in the number of positive cells of
, COX-2, IL-12B, and ICAM-1. From the above results, it could be concluded that Yangdokbackhotang showed benificial immunosupressive effect on the hypersensitive reaction.
Effects of CheongSimYeonJaTang(CSYJT) on Control of Immune-function in highly purified mouse B cells and Mast cell
Park, Seung-Chan ;
Journal of Sasang Constitutional Medicine, volume 15, issue 2, 2003, Pages 166~179
In order to evaluate the antiallergic effects of CSYJT, studies were done. We measured the cytotoxic activity for cytokines transcript expression, production of IL-4, IgE,
, proliferation of B cell in HRF plus anti-CD40mAb plus rIL-4 stimulated murine splenic B cells. and cytokines transcript expression of IgE in Mast cell The results were obtained as follows: 1. CSYJT decreased the expression of IL-4 in mast cell significantly. 2. CSYJT decreased the production of IL-4 significantly. 3. CSYJT decreased the expression of IgE in mast cell significantly. 4. CSYJT decreased the production of IgE significantly. 5. CSYJT increased the appearance of
. The facts above prove that CSYJT is effective against the allergy. Thus, I think that we should study on this continuously.
