The KIPS Transactions:PartA, volume 9, issue 1, 2002, Pages 1~1
Most of the traditional embedded web server systems have been designed for monitoring and controlling some dedicated equipments. Hence, not only they have no generality and flexibility but also they are too expensive for the lower-cost domestic equipment. To cope with these difficulty, we suggest a lower-cost μ-embedded web server model which is suitable for monitoring and controlling the industry or house equipments by using the internet. The suggested model is based on an one-chip μ-processor in which the ISP (In-System Programming) function and flash ROM are embedded basically to minimize the cost of H/W and S/W. Also it allows to add an new function dynamically to provide the generality and flexibility. Finally, to evaluate the feasibility of the suggested model, we have manufactured a test-board based on the ATMega103 μ-processor and programmed the control program and tested it on the MS Explorer 5.0 environment.
Scalable scheduling techniques for distributed real-time multimedia database systems
The KIPS Transactions:PartA, volume 9, issue 1, 2002, Pages 9~9
In this paper, we propose scalable scheduling techniques based on EDF to efficiently integrate hard real-time and multimedia soft real-time tasks in the distributed real-time multimedia database system. Hard tasks are guarangteed based on worst case execution times, whereas multimedia soft tasks are served based on mean execution times. This paper describes a served-based scheme for partitioning the CPU bandwidth among different task classes that coexist in the same system. To handle the problem of class overloads characterized by varying number of tasks and varying task arrival rates, thus scheme shows how to adjust the fraction of the CPU bandwidth assigned to each class. This scheme fixes the maximum time that each hard task can execute in the period of the server, whereas it can dynamically change the bandwidth reserved to each multimedia task. The proposed method is capable of minimizing the mean tardiness of multimedia tasks, without jeopardizing the schedulability of the hard tasks. The performance of this scheduling method is compared with that of similar mechanisms through simulation experiments.

The KIPS Transactions:PartA, volume 9, issue 1, 2002, Pages 19~19
A new class of applications based on event interactions are emerging for the wide-area network such as Internet, which is characterized as loose coupling, heterogeneity. and asynchrony. Content-barred publish/subscribe systems are widely being studied to implement the extent notification service for wide-area networks. In this paper, we analyze some problems of the content-based routing algorithm in SIENA, a recently developed as a representative event notification service architecture, and develop an enhanced routing algorithm.

The KIPS Transactions:PartA, volume 9, issue 1, 2002, Pages 29~29
For the efficient collaboration awareness, the CSCW (Computer-Supported Cooperative Work) systems provide functions such as telepointing, snap-shot, and document/project tracking. Among these, telepointing allows an event occurrence on the shared window of a local computing system to be presented in remote computing systems. Although telepointing has been mentioned in the literature, few research papers deal with the functional requirements and protocols for telepointing. This parer describes the functional requirements and payload format for RTP (Real-Time Transport Protocol)-based telepointing. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed RTP-barred telepointing, we have implemented a whiteboard and compared it with that of the Microsoft Netmeeting. The evaluation results show that the proposed telepointing performs better in terms of CPU usage and the amount of network traffic.

The KIPS Transactions:PartA, volume 9, issue 1, 2002, Pages 37~37
Most researches of transforming sequential programs into parallel programs have been based on the loop structure transformation method. However, most programs have implicit interprocedure parallelism. This paper suggests a way of extracting parallelism from the loops with procedure calls using the data dependency elimination method. Most parallelization of the loop with procedure calls have been conducted for extracting parallelism from the uniform code. In this paper, we propose interprocedural transformation, which can be apply to both uniform and nonuniform code. We show the examples of uniform, nonuniform, and complex code parallelization. We then evaluated the performance of the various transformation methods using the CRAY-T3E system. The comparison results show that the proposed algorithm out-performs other conventional methods.

The KIPS Transactions:PartA, volume 9, issue 1, 2002, Pages 45~45
This paper proposes the fuzzy closed RCMP queueing network model using fuzzy set theory for the performance evaluation of centralized distributed processing system with ambiguous system factors in the network environments. This model can derive the measures for system performances such as the job spending time, the system throughput, average job number and server utilizations using fuzzy mean value analysis which can process the fuzzy factors. Computer simulation has been performed centralized distributed system with fuzzy service requirement time for verifying the effectiveness of derived equations of performance evaluation according to the numbers of clients, and the results were analyzed. The proposed model provides more and flexible realistic than performance evaluation of conventional method when we evaluated system performance with ambiguous factors.

The KIPS Transactions:PartA, volume 9, issue 1, 2002, Pages 61~61
This paper presents a method which synthesizes asynchronous circuits from free-choice Signal Transition Graphs (STGs) with timing constraints. The proposed method synthesizes asynchronous circuits by analyzing: the relations between signal transitions directly from the STGs without generating state graphs. The synthesis procedure decomposes a free-choice STG into deterministic STGs which do not have choice behavior. Then, a timing analysis extracts the timed concurrency and tamed causality relations between any two signal transitions for each deterministic STG. The synthesis procedure synthesizes circuits for each deterministic STG and synthesizes the final circuit by merging the circuits for each deterministic STG. The experimental results show that our method achieves significant reductions in synthesis time for the circuits which have a large state space, and generates circuits that have nearly the same area as compared to previous methods.

The KIPS Transactions:PartA, volume 9, issue 1, 2002, Pages 75~75
A robust signal transition density propagation method for a zero delay model is presented to obtain the signal transition density for estimating the power consumption. The power estimation for the zero delay model is a proper criteria for the lower boundary of power consumption. Since the input characteristics are generally unknown at design stage, robust estimation for wide range input characteristics is very important for the power consumption. In this paper, a conventional transition estimation method will be explored. And this exploration will be analyzed with the input/output signal transition behavior and used to propose the robust signal transition density propagation for the power estimation. In order to apply to practical circuits, the reconvergent path, which is crucial to affect the exactness of the power estimation, will be studied and an algorithm to take the reconvergent path into consideration will be presented. In experiment, the proposed methodology shows better robustness, comparable accuracy and elapsed time compared to the conventional methods.

The segmentation of target objects from three dimensional volume images is an essential step for visualization and volume measurement. In this paper, we present a method to detect the surface of objects by improving the widely used levoy filtering for volume visualization. Using morphological operators we generate completely closed surfaces and selectively segment objects using the volume growing algorithm. The presented method was applied to 3-D artificial sphere images and angiocardiograms. We quantitatively compared this method with the conventional levoy filtering using artificial sphereimages, and the results showed that our method is better in the aspect of voxel errors. The results of visual comparison using angiocardiograms also showed that our method is more accurate. The presented method in this paper is very effective for segmentation of volume data because segmentation, visualization and measurement are frequently used together for 3-D image processing and they can be easily related in our method.

The KIPS Transactions:PartA, volume 9, issue 1, 2002, Pages 93~93
This paper introduces the design of high-speed analog-to-digital converter (ADC) for hard disk drive (HDD) read channel applications. This circuit is bated on fast regenerative autozero comparator for high speed and low-error rate comparison operation, and Double Speed Dual ADC (DSDA) architecture for efficiently increasing the overall conversion speed of ADC. A new type of thermometer-to-binary decoder appropriate for the autozero architecture is employed for no glitch decoding, simplifying the conventional structure significantly. This ADC is designed for 6-bit resolution, 800 Msample/s maximum conversion rate, 390 mW power dissipation, one clock cycle latency in 0.65 m CMOS technology.

The KIPS Transactions:PartA, volume 9, issue 1, 2002, Pages 99~99
The goal of this paper is to generalize the concept of Bezier curves and surfaces defined on the vector space
to Lie groups, which is a new generation method of curves (called Bezier curves) on Lie groups. The defined Bezier curves and surfaces are alsways smooth because of the properties of Lie groups. We apply this method to smooth motion interpolation or smooth trajectory generation for moving rigid body in space.

The KIPS Transactions:PartA, volume 9, issue 1, 2002, Pages 105~105
The purpose of this paper is to develop a courseware based on GIS (Geographic Information System) for improving visual and spatial learning efficiency of geography learning. The existing coursewares are not easy to encourage the learners in learning motivation, because these provide only the visual information using simple texts or imamges to the learners. To overcome these constraints, our courseware using GIS that can support spatial information can control the attribute information of map. In this paper, we define the courseware as the geography learning system. This courseware system enables the learners to take the perfect learning and the repetitive learning through the feedback after evaluating the learning degree. Also using geography learning application modules we implemented, the learners can participate directly in learning as well as search information in WWW.

Many CAI materials have been developed for middle school education. Among subjects in middle school education curricula, various multimedia materials are used in science subjects. Especially, those materials are necessary to teach basic knowledge of the environment, structure and components of animal. Thus, we implemented a multimedia title for a chapter of heart and blood circulation from first year science subject in middle school curricula. Most previous researches mainly focussed on the development of CAI programs, but did not suggest the analysis result of impact using those CAI programs. In this paper, we presented the analysis method of impact and the result, but also suggested a way to improve effectiveness of teaching in a class.

The KIPS Transactions:PartA, volume 9, issue 1, 2002, Pages 121~121
Web-based teaching-learning systems through the internet has continuously pursued the learner-centered educational environment by promoting the interaction between leachers and students. As a result, learners haute become free of the limit of time and space and have more ways to have access to education information more easily. Consequently, the development of the internet has resulted in the changes of the educational environment. Web-based distance education through the internet is now expected to be applied widely in various fields of education. In fact, distance education through the internet has taken place in a new education paradigm. The purpose of this paper is to promote the economical and educational efficiency of all the procedures from developing the system to operating in a remote training cyber system. Therefore in developing the system, we designed it to raise the efficiency by making main modulo into components and by reducing the terms and cost by reuse. Also lute meant to raise the efficiency of education by applying constructivism as an educational basis.

The KIPS Transactions:PartA, volume 9, issue 1, 2002, Pages 129~129
JNI is a linkage method to other languages such as C/C++ which enables the Java to do the platform-dependent specific tasks and also, it can be used to reuse the existing libraries and programs. However, the complex and difficult steps are required to use JNI and it is Inconvenient to manipulate Java source and C/C++ source separately. We design and implement the JPP (Java Preprocessor) that enables the Java source and C/C++ source to handle in a same source file and reduces the required steps so as to use JNI easily.
