A study on the functions of headings
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 12, issue 2, 1995, Pages 9~35
Locating function of a particular item is more of added entry than a main entry heading. This function was expanded especially in the machine readable cataloging by introducing the control number and standard bibliographic number. Assembling function of the main entry heading is on a level with that of cross reference and notes, added entries, uniform headings. Links among all variant forms of a heading in hypercatalog will be made for collocating of all publications of a given author. The link of bibliographic records in this catalog can be freed from the dependence on standardized heading form. The function of the catalog is not affected even though by abandoning the concept of main entry heading. Further efforts should be made to raise users' finding opportunities through expansion of acces points and linking devices among related records.
A study on the characterization of information science
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 12, issue 2, 1995, Pages 37~61
The purpose of this paper is to make a careful study on the characterization of information science and to describe the scientific basis for the revitalization. At first, various theoretic models in initial stage and later tendency of infor mation science are analyzed and evaluated. After that the dilemma and nature of information science as a postmodem science are investigated. Upon the results of these analysis and investigation, the new reference points of information science are presented from the strategic, theory-immanant, and methodological aspects.
A Study on the Changing Role and Staffing of Catalog Librarian
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 12, issue 2, 1995, Pages 63~83
The purpose of the paper is to review the key factors of automation and information technology which have generally had the first and the most impact on traditional cataloging department and catalogers. Additioansl qualities and skills which the catalogers in this environment will need are indentified. The review is done through the examination of research reports and results of numerous library surveys. The overall climate of change is toward a process of conver gent evolution between catalogers and public service librarians. The heads of technical services departments and several catalogers in eight Korean academic libraries including National Central Library are interviewed to find out the present development of automation and any effect on cataloging staff in terms of work and organizational structure. It is too early to have any such changing impact as the automation is still in its implementing stage. However, they see the future when professional catalogers are expected to serve in much extended role as the automation stages are moving ahead.
A Study of Automatic Indexing Technique based on Logical Structure of SGML Hangul Document
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 12, issue 2, 1995, Pages 85~101
Conventional indexing sytstems support only full-text indexing method for electronic documents and do not use logical structure of documents in retrieval. Most electronic documents are in different formats depending on various systems. Also, they only indicate physical style of the document without considering any logical structure. Thus, in the effort to standardize the exchange of documents. IS0 developed SGML(Stadard Generalized Markup Language) which contains information about logical structure of the documents. In this paper, to resolve the disadvantages of full-text indexing method and to use standard document format. indexing system for SGML document is designed and implemented. In this system, user can assign indexing domain on elements, thus the logical structure of document is reflected in retrieving information. Various retrieval methods can be implemented by using the structural information of the document. In addition, automatic indexing for SGML Hangul document is supported in this system
A Structural Analysis and Policy Recommendations on the Scientific and Technological Information (STI) in Korea
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 12, issue 2, 1995, Pages 103~126
This study, through the use of the comparative method, intends to contribute to the effective and productive use of Korea's STI. This study first tries to understand the nature of ST1 as well as the development in the field of science and technology in Korea. And then, the historical background of the two leading ST1 centers. KINITI(Korea Institute of Industry & Technology Information) and KORDIC(Korea Research & Development Information Center), is described. Furthermore, the ST1 structures of KINITI and KORDIC are compared and analyzed in the light of their network, collection development, databases, and information services. Finally, based on these findings, this study tries to make some policy recommendations.
A Strudy on Information Resources Management for Effective Corporate Information Function
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 12, issue 2, 1995, Pages 127~150
This dissertation is composed of three parts. In the first, the prevalent problems in corporate information management are investigated from the standpoint of information utilization charateristics in industries. In part two, the state of the arts of information management in Korean industries has been surveyed. In part three, on the basis of these comprehensive analysis the IRM process is systemized according to the general resource management processes of intake, utilization, and development.
A study on the Multimedia University Library System Based on the Information Super Highway
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 12, issue 2, 1995, Pages 151~169
The purpose of this research is to investigate the of multimedia university library system theoretical models and to design partial functions of this model using multimedia toolbook 3.0. The theoretical model is constructed based on several operating systems such as JANUS Virtual Library and The Book House. Knowledge base of the designed system is constructed by interviewing reference librarians. The designed system consists of six modules : Reference Expert system. Journal Browsing, Multimedia Database, OPAC, External Database and User' s Guide. Finally, four problems are discussed as several major problems in building up multimedia university library network
A Study on Hypertext-based Bibliographic Information Retrieval System Using Internet
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 12, issue 2, 1995, Pages 171~192
In this study, we constructed a hypertext-based bibliographic information retrieval system, which is very usell tool to browse and retrieve structured data. We minimized the problem of the use; s disorientation with the keyword retrieval technique. We also presented the potential advantages of this system which could be obtained by implementing it on WWW.
Analysis of Practical Utilization of Research Outputs in Librarianship and Information Management
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 12, issue 2, 1995, Pages 193~212
Do Korean researchers in the field of library and information science really provide practitioners with knowledge and information needed in their efforts to improve library and information services\ulcorner If so, to what degree do the researchers excercise such intellectual leadership in the profession\ulcorner This study is intended to seek answers to these questions. A sample of 589 administrators and librarians working in public, research and university libraries was requested to respond to the questionnaire posted in June of 1995. Data gathered from the responses were analysed to find how, for what purposes, to what degree, and what kinds of, research outputs in the profession practitioners utilize in their provision of services to users.
Improving Retrieval Effectiveness with Multiple Weighting Schemes
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 12, issue 2, 1995, Pages 213~223
It has known that different representations of either queries or documents, or different retrieval techniques retrieve different sets of documents. Recent works suggest that significant improvements in retrieval performance can be achieved by combining multiple representations or multiple retrieval techniques. In this paper we propose a simple method for retrieving different documents within a single query representation, a single document representation and a single retrieval technique. We classify the types of documents, and describe the properties of weighting schemes. Then. we explain that different properties of weighting schemes may retrieve different types of documents. Experimental results show that significant improvements can be obtained by combining the retrieval results form different properties of weighting schemes.
Developing the KRIST Test Collection for Researches in Information Retrieval
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 12, issue 2, 1995, Pages 225~232
It has been known that test collections play an important role for researches in information retrieval. A variety of test collections have been created in foreign countries, and have been heavily used by researchers. Although research interests in Hangul information retrieval have been rapidly grown up in Korea these days, lack of Hangul test collec tions makes it difficult to develop retrieval techniques for Hangul texts. This study describes the development of the KRIST test collection. The KRIST test collection consists of 13.515 bibliographic records. 30 queries and a list of relevant documents to the queries.
