Information Environment on Scientific and Technological Researcher
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 13, issue 1, 1996, Pages 5~18
This study intended to analyze overall information environment and information needs of researchers in scientific and technological fields. 113 researchers, professors or research graduate students either working or studying in four of the scientific research institutes or colleges majoring in science and technology were selected as a sample group. Out of 25 items in the questionnaires, 14 showed statistically significant through which their information environment and information seeking behavior were analyzed and hpothesis were tested
Development of an Indexing Model for Korean Textual Databases
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 13, issue 1, 1996, Pages 19~43
The indexing languages and techniques were ~ u ~ e y e d for Korean textual databases, and retrieval effectivenesses of two indexing languages were evaluated in an online searching experiment. It was found that most of the Korean textual databases surveyed employ natural language indexing by either an automatic or a manual method, and that natural language indexing may outperform controlled language indexing if appropriate search strategies are employed.
An n-gram-based Indexing Method for Effective Retrieval of Hangul Texts
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 13, issue 1, 1996, Pages 47~63
Conventional automatic indexing methods for Hangul texts can be classified into two groups as follows: One is to extract index terms by removing non-indexable segments from word-phrases, and the other is to generate index terms from the morphemes of word-phrases. The former suffers from the problem of word boundaries when documents contain many compound nouns. The latter can overcome the word boundary problem by extracting simple nouns, but has many overheads to develop a lot of linguistic knowledges needed in the indexing procedure. In this paper we propose a new indexing method based on n-grams. This method alleviates the problems of previous indexing methods related with word boundaries and linguistic knowledges. We also compare the effectiveness of the n-gram based indexing method with that of the previous ones.
The Effect of the Search Goal Requirements on Online Searching Behavior
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 13, issue 1, 1996, Pages 65~82
The aim of this study is to identify how searchers reflect the search goal requirements associated with search questions in process and outcome. One query which has two different search goal requirements was given to subjects, that is, one is to increase high precision and the other is to increase high recall. Using ERIC ONTAP file through DIALOG online search system, 54 subjects conducted online searches twice for the high precision search and for the high recall search. Subjects employed significantly different search strategies, invested significantly different efforts, and achieved significantly different results between the high precision and the high recall search.
Researcher's Behavior of Gathering Cited References in field of Library and Information Science
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 13, issue 1, 1996, Pages 83~101
The purpose of this study was to analyse the gathering channel of cited references and the behavior of researchers in the field of library and information science. The survey by questionnaire was used to collect data for the study and the SPSS program was used for the statistical analysis such as correlation analysis and trend analysis by descriptive statistics. The main results of this study are so follows : - The hypothesis suggested for the study was proved to be true. - There was no statistically significant correlation between the research experience or the number of published papers and gathering channel of cited references. - Most of the researchers responded favorably to the exchange of informations among researchers includingsource materials and details of ongoing researches.
Bibliographic Information and Reformulation
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 13, issue 1, 1996, Pages 103~117
The purpose of this study is to identify how users react with the search options and bibliographic information during search reformulation on the online catalog. Two online catalogs(N0TIS system and Dynix system) were selected and undergraduate students were recruited as the participants for this study. The study shows that the search options and bibliographic information affected the type of the query reformulation and the re-choice of the search options during search.
A Study on the LHI(Local Holdings Information) Function for Acquisition of Full-Text after Searching the Bibliographic DB
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 13, issue 1, 1996, Pages 119~141
The purpose of this study is to seek how to effectively acquire a full-text using LHI(Loca1 Holdings Information) when we search bibliographic DB. For this study, the pre-investigation of LHI within Online and CD-ROM DB was made using local and overseas literature. The questionary survey was made of librarians and users who have used CD-ROM. The finding of this study is that LHI is not very widely used in libraries, thus more study on ,LHI within Online and CD-ROM DB is required to get high quality information service.
A Comparative Study of Evaluation Factors on Information Systems between the User and the Developer
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 13, issue 1, 1996, Pages 143~172
The purpose of the study is to set up factors for evaluating information systems which can meet both users' and developers' needs. These factors can be used as a framework in developing successful information systems. To achieve this purpose factors are selected first from the literature review by the previous studies. Then two different questionnaires based on selected factors were made up and distributed to two separate groups; users and developers. It appeared that there are significant differences on ranking and weighting for evaluation factors of information systems between the user and the developer. 185 factors for evaluating information systems are divided into 9 criteria based on their roles. There are significant differences on ranking under 6 out of 9 evaluation criteria between two groups. These are 'effectiveness', 'usability', 'user friendliness', 'documentation', 'output', 'maintenance'. However, there are no significant differences on factors in 'performance', 'developer', and 'user satisfaction' criteria. As a result of the study 185 factors for evaluating information systems were presented with rank.

Thesaurus Development for HiTEL Service
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 13, issue 1, 1996, Pages 227~241
We present development results for a Hangul thesaurus which was provided to improve performance of the intelligent information retrieval system. The important stages and methods in the process of term acquisition, classification, creation of the consistency-effectiveness relationship using HiTEL menu and text of dictionary are described. To cany out our study we have built a thesaurus management system and also describe its utility functions.
