Development of a Thesaurus Management System based on the Object-Oriented Technique
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 13, issue 2, 1996, Pages 5~18
For the construction of thesaurus, a thesaurus management system is needed which can process dynamic variations fast and exactly such as input. correction and deletion of words, and definition of new relationship between words. In this paper, I developed a thesaurus management system based on the object-oriented technique and GUI(graphic user interface) screen, and to enhance the effectiveness of information retrieval. I put emphasis on the expansion of synonym, English and Korean words containing the same concept.
The Historical Development of Information Retrieval Systems
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 13, issue 2, 1996, Pages 19~37
The development of information retrieval between 1950s and 1990s is described chronologically. For each decade, the following information retrieval systems are examined : post-coordinate and KWIC indexing methods for the 1950s ; off-line and experimental on-line systems for the 1960s ; on-line and full-text retrieval systems for the 1970s ; full-text databases, on-line interfaces, and overseas and domestic on-line databases for the 1980s ; and finally for the 1990s, CD-ROM, multimedia, hypertext, and Internet. The prospects for the future are also discussed.
Analytical Review of Data Formats and Technological Standards for Multimedia Information
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 13, issue 2, 1996, Pages 39~71
The goal of this paper is mainly to review and summarize the multimedia information formats and technical standards that have been applied so that library and information specialists can understand them systematically. The most fundamental differences between digital library and the classic one are specified by describing the general characteristics of hypermedia information environment. With the proprietary advantages of multimedia technology to digital library developments, the core technological standards (publicly available) of text and non-text data, including multimedia data, are reviewed. Finally, it describes some important and professional perspectives and roles of library practioners as well as researchers who are engaged with the innovation of digital library.
A Comparative Study on Local Internet WWW Electronic Newspaper
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 13, issue 2, 1996, Pages 73~96
Since 1995 local newspapers competitively commenced the service of multimedia electronic newspaper on Internet WWW due to the technical development in data processing and the widely used Internet. It includes image, phonetics and moving pictures as well as texts. The Internet service of newspaper articles are not only the information source which enables the users utilize the various information easily and rapidly but also to be an important reference service tools in the library. Howeverjn many cases. the current local electronic newspaper service aims at the service itself. Therefore, the information does not contain plenty of information. In some cases, information searching system focused on the users are not established yet. In this research, structuring process and characteristics of the Internet WWW electronic newspaper and the current service status and contents of the local newspaper have been reviewed. Construction of menu, information searching system and reference mannual for users of 6 local newspapers have been analyzed to secure efficient service for users.
Dewey Decimal Classification in Print vs. Electronic Dewey : the User Study
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 13, issue 2, 1996, Pages 97~120
This study reports the results of an exploratory investigation into building number technique applied by a sample of novice students using Electronic Dewey(ED). For control purposes, a second sample used the same classification schedule but in print format. In this experiment, the DDC 20 in print had a higher success rate than ED. While the searches in ED took shorter time than DDC in print, students using DDC 20 in print were able to build more correct numbers than ED. Novice users did not take full advantage of system features of ED. Therefore, it is important to note the overall difficulty with which users could build numbers from the ED after little training. However, it is interesting to note that the students in the CD-ROM group were more interested in building numbers than their colleagues in the Print group. The correlation between the grade of English course and the score in experiment was negative in Print group. And the correlation between GPA and the score in experiment was a little positive. The correlation between the time and the score in experiment was quitenegative.
Comparative Study on Citation Analysis in the Field of Mechanical Engineering in Korea and Japan
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 13, issue 2, 1996, Pages 121~141
This study comparatively investigated citation behavior of articles by researchers in the field of mechanical engineering in Korea and Japan. For the study 7, 515 citations from 202 articles covered in KSME, 243 articles covered in JSME, and 129 articles indexed in SCI are analysed. It identified the general citation behavior, the difference with citation behavior by publication place, low use of grey literature and Korean publications by Korean researchers, and the difference with citation behavior between Korean and Japan researchers.
A Theoretical Review of Relevance Judgments
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 13, issue 2, 1996, Pages 143~163
Relevance judgments play a very important role in evaluation of information systems since the degree of success of the information retrieval depends on the relevance judgments. This article reviews the theoretical background of the concept of 'relevance' associated with information retrieval evaluation and tries to identify whether there is any factor that affects relevance judgments. By reviewing previous researches done in the information retrieval evaluation field, four variables have been identified as impacting factors, such as document surrogates presented to judges, the order of presentation, measuring devices of relevance judgments and judges.
Growth of the Korean Porfessional Librarians
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 13, issue 2, 1996, Pages 165~187
The purpose of this study is to interpret the growth and the present status of Korean librarians using statistical data. The data were collected from various statistics on Korean libraries and were analyzed for a time series The results are : The librarians are not well recognized as professionals in korea. Only a small portion of the library staffs are professionals but professionals are gradually increasing. However, many librarians do not belong to the professional associations or societies. Thus appropriate promotional policy for the professional librarianship is very much desired.
Collective Management Systems of Copyright in the Digital Works
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 13, issue 2, 1996, Pages 189~221
Copyright is challenged by the rapid development of digital technology. This study investigated a number of new copyright-related issues : electrocopying, digital transmission, legal definition of multimedia, moral right, fair use et al. To use copyright works we need licensing of rights and permissions. Then at this paper we examined the scopes and contents of permission with copyright owners or publishers, also considered relationships of copyright owners with distributors and end-users. Finally, to protect rights of copyright owners and use freely copyright works, we suggested introduction of 'collective management system of copyright' and construction of 'copyright management information system' .
A Study on Information Retrieval Systems Integration Using Common Object Request Broker Architecture
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 13, issue 2, 1996, Pages 223~242
This study proposes an integration model of information retrieval systems using a standard distributed object computing technology in digital library environments. In the proposed integration model called DDIRIORB, the middleware broker based on CORBA is designed for the transparent access to the distributed information repositories and the consistent view of the information retrieval by applying 239.50 protocol. The DDIRIORB is an adaptable open architecture that allows for the following benefits : bibliographic and abstract information retrieval simultaneously, interoperability between application servers and clients, consistent view of search results, complexity reduction of integration interfaces, and easy to use.
