A Study on the Strategic Planning for Special Information Centers
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 14, issue 1, 1997, Pages 5~26
The accelerating rate of changing and the increasing complexity of information environments make information centers new framework in information organization, access, processing, and use. This article presents theory and methodology of strategic planning for special information centers with an overview of literature and conceptual framework, analytical method and role model.
Comparison of Information Use Pattern between Some Scientists and Social Scientists
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 14, issue 1, 1997, Pages 27~45
This study is intended to investigate and analyze overall information use pattern of researchers and scholars in the field of science and social science, and compare the information use habits between two groups. 300 questionnaires were sent out to 7 major libraries or information centers in the field, and 217 questionnaires were returned. Five hypotheses were tested based on the assumption that there would exist some differences between two groups in their information use pattern. Some commonalities a d differences were revealed as the findings of the study.
Implementation of OSI Application Protocols in Library Networks
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 14, issue 1, 1997, Pages 47~76
This study explores the importance of OSI standards in library environment and specifically of Z39.50/SR information retrival protocols and ILL protocol. Libraries and other information systems need to implement these ap lication protocols in order to facilitate the sharing of library information resources through information networks. The foreign systems which have implemented the standard protocols are reviewed in this paper, and it is suggested that search results of OPACs and other bibliographic databases be directly used for electronic document request for fast document delivery, first by implementing Z39.50 OPACs and standard interlibrary loan systems and next by integrating the two systems in Korean electronic libraries.
A study on the Structure of the Subject Headings
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 14, issue 1, 1997, Pages 77~105
The study confirmed that the methods for expanding headings and combined structures among the headings, subdivisions, qualifiers and inverted terms were diverse, and that the headings used for similar purposes do not have identical structural forms. It is also found that the standard symbols representing generic relationship in theasurus, which are introduced in the list of subject headings, do not show precisely the hiearchical relationship of phrase headings. MeSH in pre-coordinated system will be available for retrieval in the computer environment because it can make a link between headings and subdivisions in searching stage. The changes in retrieval circumstances and the seeking behaviors of the users demand that a new structure of subject headings be developed. It was proposed that the modification of the structure in the Hangul subject headings be essential.
A Study on Hangul Qualifier for Homographic Descriptors
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 14, issue 1, 1997, Pages 107~124
It is our main aim in this study to discriminate the conceptual relationship between homographic descriptors. The roles of qualifier and the problems of the recent usage of qualifier such as Hangul, Hanja and foreign languages, which is based largely on the dictionaries, subject heading lists and thesauri, re analyzed within the framework of the our test thesaurus developed as a macro-the-saurus. Finally, we proposed some new ideas must be integrated into the Hangul qualifier in order to make it generally applicable within the field of dictionary, and the method of representing, selection principles and priority of Hangul qualifiers.
The Study on the Organizational Integration of the Information Related Operations in University
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 14, issue 1, 1997, Pages 125~159
The purpose of the research was to investigate the organizational integration process of the university library, computer center and other informa ion related operations. The research process follows : first, the literature review of the organizational integration of the information related operations. second, analysis of the organizational integration in Korea. third, the organizational integration of information related operation in US and Japan, then the case analysis of information related organizational integrations in Korea. This process lead us to point out few problems and pitfalls that could occur in the integration procedure. The total integration procedure has turned out to be the most effective in the University environment. And for the management of fully integrated organization. Vice-President and Chief Information Officer, - who is reponsible to suggest vision, leadership and ability to cope with the complex nature of the future information society - was strongly suggested.
A Study on the Copyright for the Digital Data
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 14, issue 1, 1997, Pages 161~181
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the legality of the restructuring and the using of the library data by corpus, the linguistic analysis data. In the process of the analysis, the definition of corpus is tried and its possible application areas are mentioned. It is also proved how its applications are related to the copyright. In addition the problems in the present interpretations of the copyright for the library materials are analyzed in terms of to be read by machine rather than to be read by mankind, especially when the data is stored in the forms of the digital data.
A study on online shared cataloging gateway implementation using Z39.50(information retrieval protocol)
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 14, issue 1, 1997, Pages 183~206
The information Retrieval Protocol, Z39.50 is applied to the shared cataloging gateway. The history and functions of the Z39.50 are reviewed and the characteristics and the database update service of Z39.50 are taken into account in the notion of the shared cataloging. And for the test, one of the domestic on-line shared cataloging systems is adopted and newly remodelled using Z39.50 protocol. Two kinds of Z39.50 shared cataloging gateway models (th centralized shared cataloging gateway model and the distributed shared cataloging gateway model) are operated in Web server.
A study on synthetical user interface for books and non-book information materials
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 14, issue 1, 1997, Pages 207~222
This study is aimed at design and implementation of data format for non-book materials in the field of library user interface. The ba-sic data elements were complied with KORMARC and some amend-ments with detailed expansions were applied for development of the use of at libraries. The data formats of various types of media such as books, audio materials, image data, pamphlets, posters which stored in art library were designed respectively through the use of Graphical User Interface.
A study on theory of cataloging
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 14, issue 1, 1997, Pages 223~254

First, the objectives and function of the library catalog was analyzed. Second, According to this methodology was researched the Cutter's theory of 'convenience of the public' on the cataloging, Osborn's 'the Crisis of Cataloging' (legalist theory of cataloging, perfectionism theory bibliographic theory and pragmatic theory) and Lubetzky's the theory of 'Cataloging Rules and Principles' and the last Houten' s 'In the Iron Age of Cataloging' theory.
A study on the use of telecommunication service of university librarinans
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 14, issue 1, 1997, Pages 255~267

정보학분야 연구동향 분석
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 14, issue 1, 1997, Pages 269~291
The study examines research themes, the relationship with other disciplines, and disciplinary organization of Information Science n order to analyze general research patterns in the field of Information Science. The methods used for this study is subject analysis of the journal articles and citation analysis. In result, it is found that most researchers in Information Science have studied on 'library-related information science'. But the study also finds the research pattern shift from library-related study to computer-related study.
