The purpose of this paper is mainly to review and analyze electronic information management systems of advanced countries, and to build an applied model for effective electronic information management in Korea based upon various system's functional analysis.
Comparative study of class and division classification for the civil engineering field in a library classification system
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 14, issue 2, 1997, Pages 105~122
A library for the civil engineering field goes on increasing in quantity because of the growth in construction technology and the enlargement in applicable fields of civil engineering. Most of libraries and information centers in construction companies are using Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) or Korean Decimal Classification (KDC) to classify a library in civil engineering field. It is necessary for the library classification system to be equipped with a more standardized code system, which corresponds to the academical and technical classification for the civil engineering works. This study analyzes the defects of existing classification systems, and then suggests a new classes and divisions classification system, which facilitates to link academic information with technical data, for the civil engineering field. The proposed system is expected to make practical application of information classification system in the construc ion industry and to be applied for the revised edition of KDC.
Variations in relevance assessments and evaluation of the performance of full-text retrieval system
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 14, issue 2, 1997, Pages 123~141
This study examined the extent to which variations in relevance assessments affect the evaluation of the performance of full-text retrieval system. Four sets of relevance judgments obtained by examining the full-text of documents were used to test the retrieval effectiveness. There was no noticeable difference in retrieval performance among the four relevance judgment sets. It implies that a variety of definitions of relevance has no effect on the evaluation of the performance of the full-text retrieval system. Furth r retrieval experiments on this topic incorporating relevance feedback, which is one of the sophisticated retrieval techniques using relevance information, are suggested.
A study on job requirements and qualifications for catalogers in academic libraries
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 14, issue 2, 1997, Pages 143~163
The purpose of this study is to find changing trends in roles and qualifications of catalogers by comparing and analyzing job advertisements from 1990 to 1997 and to suggest a direction of cataloging education based upon the trends. During the past years, the development of the information technology has influenced upon the duties of the catalogers and the requirements of the positions. Based upon the knowledg of traditional tools for classifying and cataloging, increasing needs for computer skills, networks, supervisiory skills, managerial skills, communication skills, research activities, and ability to adapt the changing environment were required for the catalogers. If s time to prepare a new cataloging education that produce excellent catalogers for the future.
A study on object oriented modeling methodology for user system design
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 14, issue 2, 1997, Pages 165~189
In analyzing, designing, implementing the system, the traditional modeling method lacks design procedure and specification in reflecting the functional or nonfunctional requirements perfectly and consequently. These problems are unreliable in the Library and Information System since it requires a diversity of reference methodes based on various types of data. In this paper, we modify the method partially which the OMT proposes and apply it on system development. We also prepare the object oriented modeling modified from OMT type' modeling for Library User System Requirements.
Women and library & information science
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 14, issue 2, 1997, Pages 191~212
The purpose of this study is to examin the women' s issues in Library & Information Science and to develop a FLIS (Feminist Library & Information Science). This study sample consists of 83 articles published during 1970-1996 in 21 major LIS journals of Korea, America, and England. This study presents a women' s representation mode in LIS that allows categorization of women' s issues into three distinct but related categories: 1) women as information producer, 2) women as information user, and 3) women as information manager. This study suggests that FLI be based on Feminism and take gender as a analytic category of LIS research.
A stemming algorithm for a korean language free-text retrieval system
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 14, issue 2, 1997, Pages 213~234
A stemming algorithm for the Korean language free-text retrieval system has been designed and implemented. The algorithm contains three major parts and it operates iteratively ; firstly, stop-words are removed with a use of a stop-word list ; secondly, a basic removing procedure proceeds with a rule table 1, which contains the suffixes, the postpositional particles, and the optionally adopted symbols specifying an each stemming action ; thirdly, an extended stemming and rewriting procedures continue with a rule table 2, which are composed of th suffixes and the optionally combined symbols representing various actions depending upon the context-sensitive rules. A test was carried out to obtain an indication of how successful the algorithm was and to identify any minor changes in the algorithm for an enhanced one. As a result of it, 21.4 % compression is achieved and an error rate is 15.9%.

Developing criteria for evaluation of WWW resources in electronic libraries
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 14, issue 2, 1997, Pages 249~268
Unlike most print resources such as magazines and journals that go through an filtering process (e.g. editing, peering review), information in world Wide Web and Internet is mostly unfiltered. Using and citing information found over Web may not be reliable or authoritative. Therefore it is necessary to develop skills to evaluate what we found on the net. Fifteen evaluation documents for WWW are collected, analyzed from digital sources of U. S. academic libraries and common criteria for evaluating WWW resources are developed. Also several practical steps were made to overcome the quality problems.
