A study on contracting-out of the public library in Korea
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 15, issue 1, 1998, Pages 7~17
The term exchange and abolition and amalgamation and contracting-out of the public library is brought in Korea recently. That's background is discussed, specially discusses on the subject of contracting-out and proposes a plan of contracting-out of the public library in Korea.
Facilities of Z39.50 client for Networked information retrieval
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 15, issue 1, 1998, Pages 19~42
Most of the work done in developing Z39.50 was carried out in the basic protocol framework. It becomes apparent that some problems would be quite unacceptable in implementing and reinforcing the networked information retrieval and that it needs some other arrangement such as ISP. This article discussed the current modifications like ISPs by reviewing the unique characters of Z39.50 and the overall design of a client-server search systems, and also distinguished the Z39.50 clients that have been developed as non-profits from those of profits in the perspective of Z39.50 function-expanding.
Research on usability of an OPAC(Online Public Access Catalog)
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 15, issue 1, 1998, Pages 43~62
this study is to determine whether color, icon, sorting methods of brief description about materials, and postioning methods of final records affect the usability of the OPAC(Online Public Access Catalog) screen designs in terms of success rate, search time, and users' preferences. The findings suggest that OPAC systems can be optimized to enhance user's performances conflict with each other, designers should give more weight to performance because of the library's mission of meeting users' information needs.
A study on information service on demand using information filtering
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 15, issue 1, 1998, Pages 63~82
As information society is more and more deeloped, the importance of information filtering is gradually growing. That is, it is crucial to select the exactly necessary information for making decisions among a variety ofinformation. This study reviewed the theoretical framework of information filtering, which is systematically carrying out the above-mentioned mission in the space of producing and transferring digital information likewise Internet, and examined the informat n services on demand by applying information filtering. The more efficient information center is, the more positive it is to find out the way to give users value-added information through continuous monitoring, filtering and evaluation of incoming information.
A comparative study of classification schedules for the international trade
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 15, issue 1, 1998, Pages 83~108
Recently, information on international trade goes on increasing in quantity because of the globalism and many related areas of the field. Most of libraries and informatin centers in Korea are using Dewey Decimal Classification(DDC), Library of congress Classification(LCC), and Korean Decimal Classification(KDC) to classify library materials on the subject. The application of three classification shcemes, DDC, LCC, and KDC were queried to determine the classification of materials on international trade. And analyses of the parts of international trade in three classification shemes were done in order to identify what major changes have made with the development of the field. There was subject scatter in DDC and LCC; there was an overlap among the classes of the three systems; and there was little change between present editions and the previous editions. The revision for international trade field of the KDC, the 4t edtition was suggested to help cover some deficiencies of the classification scheme. Inorder to develop a better KDC, the 5th edition, continuous revisions based upon the opinions of subject specialists and catalogers in the field are highly recommended.
User-librarian interactions in the digital library environment
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 15, issue 1, 1998, Pages 109~128
In the digital library environment, user-librarian interaction is an essential echanism for dealing with user's information needs. This study, first, explores the importance of user-librarian interactions, and then a few types of interaction mechanisms are reviewed. A survey of the current trends in Korea is followed. finally, several ideas for activating user-librarian interactions are suggested with the purpose of giving effective information servicees.
A study on improving the effectiveness of a boolean retrieval system with feedback information
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 15, issue 1, 1998, Pages 129~148
The objective of this study is to develop a useful relevance feedback retrieval technique that can be applied to the current Boolean retrieval system. A feedback retrieval technique based on user model is recommended here to achieve this objective. To prove the usefulness of this feedback retrieval technique, two enhanced Boolean retrieval models including DNF model and P-norm model were evaluated first through retrieval effectiveness experiments. After selecting DNF model as the retrieval model, two feedback retrieval experiments were performed using initial and extended user models. It is proved that the feedback retrieval based on user model can greatly enhance the effectiveness of a Boolean retrieval system with a small modification.
constructing management system for video & audio material in the digital library
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 15, issue 1, 1998, Pages 149~164
The study aims to construct a system which can provide multimedia materials, specifically, digitalized video and audio materials on the internet. To accomplish this objective, it investigates technology on constructing a VOD/AOD system, current situations on video and audio data management in domestic and internatinal broadcasting institution and information centers. The study proposes a VOD/AOD system which can effectively manage and disseminate these materials on the internet.
