The Contruction of the Comparable Corpus Based on SGML
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 15, issue 3, 1998, Pages 7~26
The large scale documents of the data repository are utilized to the diverse applications. In the cross-language information retrieval, if the words of a query contain polymorphic meanings, the system needs multilingual corpus to exactly translate to the target words. We constructed the financial comparable corpus, called KFCM(Korean Financial Corpus corresponding to MLCC Corpus), comparing to the MLCC Polylingual Documents which consisted with the 6 European languages. It is independently constructed under the DTD of MLCC comparable corpus, and can be utilized to the cross-language information retrieval. In this paper, we discussed about the application and construction procedures of KFCM which is public domain data.
Experiments in Information Retrieval
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 15, issue 3, 1998, Pages 27~44
The purpose of this study il to analyze the papers of experiments in information retrieval for systematic categorization. The result shows that broad categories are systems, units of analysis, variables. It found three subcategories in the units of analysis: search results, queries, user. Variables are divided into human variable and non-human variables and each variables are divided into independent and dependent variables as subcategories.
A Comparative Study on Classification Schemes of Internet Services
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 15, issue 3, 1998, Pages 45~71
There is increasing importance of a system to reorganize explosive expansion of internet information resources efficiently; therefore, an increasing concern about classification system as an instrument for facilitating an access to a specific subject and improving efficiency in information retrieval. Comparing the hierarchical structure and access methodology of internet-based classification system with those of library classification such as Dewey Decimal Classification through their structural aspects and retrival process, this paper proposes the proper classification system in internet environment.
A Study on the Implementation and Performance Evaluation of Full-text Information Retrieval System based on Scientific Paper′s Content Structure
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 15, issue 3, 1998, Pages 73~93
Conventional full-text information retrieval system has been proved with high recall ratio and low precision ratio. One of the disadvantages of full-text IR system is that it is not designed to reflect the user's information need. It is due to the fact that full-text IR system has been designed based on physical and logical structure of document without considering the content of document. The purpose of the study is to develop more effective full-text IR system by resolving such disadvantages of conventional system. The study has developed new method of designing full-text IR system by using Content Structure Markup Language(CSML) other than conventioanal SGML.
A Study on KORMARC Mapping to Dublin Core and Resource Description Framework for Encoding and Exchange of Metadata
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 15, issue 3, 1998, Pages 95~112
This study is to investigate the problems in mapping between MARC data and Dublin core metadata, and to evaluate metadata as a source of cataloging. In addition resource description framework and its XML syntax for processing metadata in different format were analyzed in the view from encoding and transporting metadata in the network environments.
A Study on the Reformation of the Education Model of Information Retrieval
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 15, issue 3, 1998, Pages 113~132
The purpose of this study is to suggest a new educational model of information retrieval suited to the practical needs. For this, technical, methodological, social, and economic changes of information retrieval environment are analysed and the required roles for the information retrieval services are evaluated. In addition, this study investigated the educational situation of the subject of information retrieval at 32 universities and 2 institutions. The findings suggest that the subject of information retrieval should be seperated into theoretical instruction and practical hours in order to meet the new requirements.
A Study of Knowledge Creating Organizational Memory
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 15, issue 3, 1998, Pages 133~150
For the purpose of new‘organizational knowledge centric knowledge management’, this paper proposes the knowledge creating organizational memory which shows the knowledge creation in organization according to the dialectical circulation between the domain knowledge and the task knowledge, based on the Yin Yang theory. This paper defines two kinds of organizational knowledge such as the domain knowledge and task knowledge and designs them in the pursuit of its lifecycle. Knowledge creating organizational memory is designed to three knowledge components that circulate through the domain knowledge and the task knowledge according to the object-oriented methodology. Organizational knowledge is designed into the graphical structure of ( i ) knowledge ( ⅱ ) relation between knowledge objects and ( ⅲ ) degree of relation, which receive the legacy of organizational knowledge such as data schema, process model and knowledge base. This design of organizational knowledge can be applied to CBR(Case Based Reasoning), one of knowledge mining tools to create new organizational knowledge.
A Study on the Development of Hybrid National Union Catalog
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 15, issue 3, 1998, Pages 151~173
National Union Catalog presupposes an information infrastructure which permits users to identify and locate materials of all the domestic libraries and to share materials among libraries. Recently, there have been developed national union catalog projects in many countries using Z39.50 protocol implementation. In Korea, multi-union catalogs based on the types of libraries, i.e., public, academic, and special libraries, have been constructed separately. The virtual national union catalog which is a decentralized electronically accessible catalog unified by linking the databases of several institutions using Z39.50 is preferable to a union catalog implemented by a single centralized database. In this paper, hybrid union catalog is suggested with mixtures of centralized union catalogs and Z39.50-based distributed search systems for the development of a national union catalog. It is also suggested that the roles of a national library and centers for union catalog, and relationships between two types of institution for making sound ground for implementing the virtual Korean union catalog.
Evaluation of the Foreign Journals for Library and Information Science in Korean Libraries
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 15, issue 3, 1998, Pages 175~191
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the foreign journals in the field of library and information science subscribed in Korean libraries. The journals were selected from the union catalogs and were analyzed by using the Excel program. The results shows that 1)issues of a particular journal are irregularly scattered in many libraries sometimes lacking many issues 2)some journals are duplicated in many libraries 3)there are great differences in the number of journal subscriptions depending on the geographical differences. It is expected that these results could be well used for the cooperative library services in the future.
