An Experimental Study of Cocitation Analysis on Web Information
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 16, issue 2, 1999, Pages 7~26
This experimental study examines informetric analysis of World Wide Web based upon cocitation analysis of Web pages and features of Web resources in the field of communication studies. Cocitation analysis is basically performed to examine the intellectual structure of the communication studies in reflecting link count on the Web. The selected Web resources in the field are mapped in two dimensions based upon the similarities of cocitation frequency, correlation matrix, mutidimensional scale and cluster analysis. Cocitation analysis methods using organizational homepage, personal homepage, or Web index, to Web produced clustering of Web resources that had topical similarities. So far, although informetric analysis of Web resources is in the preliminary stage, it shows that Web can be a new tool for indicating the intellectual structure of a specific research field. In addition, this study analyzes characteristics of printing resources and Web resources, and differences of research methods in applying cocitation analysis.
A Study on the Legal Countermeasure for the Protection of Databases
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 16, issue 2, 1999, Pages 27~48
The legal protection issues of databases are rising to the surface. This study presents the adequacy of copyright protection for databases and gives the overview of the present international legal framework for additional database protection. Finally, this paper makes recommendations on the legal protection countermeasure for the domestic d a t a F industry growth.
The Pragmatics of Automatic Query Expansion Based on Search Results of Natural Language Queries
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 16, issue 2, 1999, Pages 49~80
This study analyses the researches on automatic query modification, expansion and combination based on search results of natural language queries and gives a conceptual framework for the factors affecting the effectiveness of the relevance feedback. The operating and experimental systems based on the vector space model, the binary independence model and the inference net model are reviewed, and it is found that the effectiveness of query expansion is affected by conceptual models, algorithms for weighting terms and documents and selecting query terms to be added, size of relevant and non-relevant documents to be used and size of terms to be added in relevance feedback, query length, type and size of DBs, etc.
A Study on the Documentation Styles of Online Resources and the Documentation Styles Suggested by Graduate Schools and Scholarly Journals in Korea
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 16, issue 2, 1999, Pages 81~104
Researchers commonly begin a project by studying past works in the area and deriving relevant information and ideas from their predecessors. In presenting their works researchers acknowledge their debts to preflecessors by carefully documenting each source to indicate what they borrowed. The obvious form of plagiarism is to cokx without crediting the sources. Students have to learn how to quote and how to make reference lists or works cited at the end of their reports which allow readers to locate and use the sources they used for their reports. Nowadays online information sources through the internet increase day by day, but there is no standard documentation style for citing these sources. In this paper up-to-date documentation styles recommened by APA(American Psychological Association) and MLA(Modern Language Association) are introduced. It was found that the graduate schools and the academic societies in Korea do not keep a certain documentation style consistently by checking the school catalogs and the policy statements on manuscript submisssion to the journals.
A Comparative Study of XML and HTML: Focusing on Their Characteristics and Retrieval Functions
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 16, issue 2, 1999, Pages 105~134
For efficient and precise searches in the Web environment, resources should be coded in a structured way. HTML does not cover semantic structure because of its fixed tagging. XML, which has emerged as an alternative standard markuplanguage, uses custom tags that allow structural searching. Therefore, this study aims to compare XML with HTML in terms of their characteristics and retrieval functions. In order to test retrieval functions of XML- and HTML-based systems, we constructed an experimental XML-based system. The XML-based system has several advantages over the HTML system. However, some improvements are needed to make the XML system more comprehensive and effective. First, XML document search engines with user-friendly interfaces are needed. Second, popular Web browsers such as Explorer and Communicator need to support XML 1.0 specification completely. Third, Open DTD format, which will allow information retrieval systems to retrieve documents and compress them into one single format, is also needed to control Web documents more efficiently.
Construction of a Balanced Test Collection for Evaluation of Information Retrieval System
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 16, issue 2, 1999, Pages 135~148
There has been some research in Korea on test collections for evaluation of information retrieval (IR) systems. The test collections constructed as an outcome from the research have provided a starting point and opportunities to test Korean IR systems in an objective manner. However, they are well short of the standard practice in the broader IR community in that they are small in their size and usually unbalanced in terms of the characteristics of the documents and the queries (such as the subject domains). In this article, we describe our research effort to alleviate this problem and the resulting test collection, called HANTEC (Hangul TEst Collection). HANTEC is balanced in terms of the subject domains, document lengths, and user types, and currently consists of 120,000 documents divided into three groups: general area, social science area and scienceltechnology area. The 30 queries in the collection are grouped into the same three areas in one dimension and into three distinct user groups in the other dimension.
Constructing a Metadata DB to Facilitate Retrieval of Faculty Syllabi on the Internet
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 16, issue 2, 1999, Pages 149~164
The purpose of this paper is to introduce and discuss a newly-constructed metadata database system that facilitates the retrieval of faculty syllabi available on the Internet. This gateway system aims to provide users with one-stop access to syllabi posted by the faculty of the institutes of post-secondary education from all around the world. Several elements of the Dublin Core (DC) and other supplementary elements were used for cataloging the syllabi. The conceptual schema of all the selected elements of the syllabi was developed following the entity-relationship model. The metadata of the syllabi was then stored in a relational database system. Various searching and browsing interfaces were implemented to facilitate effective retrieval. The prototype, named as Gateway to Faculty Syllabi (GFS), is available at http:/Ais.skku.ac.kr/gfs/.
A Study on the Process Analysis and Implementation of Knowledge Management System
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 16, issue 2, 1999, Pages 165~182
Knowledge and Knowledge Management have emerged as a current 'hot issue' for many organizations. This paper starts by exploring the definition of knowledge and knowledge management. It then analyzes the process of knowledge management and suggests the recommendations for effective knowledge management. Finally, it considers the pahership for knowledge management, and especially how librarians as knowledge professionals, users, and technology experts can contribute to effective knowledge management. These suggestions of the study will be used to implement knowledge management system that can organize, transfer, and share explicit and implicit knowledge.
A Study on the Description of Data Elements for the Citation Index of Academic Journals in Korea: with Special Reference to the Journal of the Korean Society for Information Management
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 16, issue 2, 1999, Pages 183~199
The three key parts of citation index are the Citation Index, the Source Index and the Permuterm Subject Index. To identify the core elements for citation index database system, it analyzed the items that have been cited in references and source items of Journal of the Korean Society for Information Management from vol. 1 no. l(1984) to vol. 15 no. 3(1998). Ten core elements were identified and the description format was specified respectively. The core elements are author, organization that the author is affiliated, title of article, title or journal, volume/numberlpage numbers, year of publication, keyword, language, subject category, statistics of references in article. Also, characteristics of errors in reference citations were analyzed and categorized in the viewpoint of the citation index development of academic journals in Korea.
