A Study on the Characteristics of Korean Journals Covered by International Abstract and Index Databases: 1990-1997
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 16, issue 3, 1999, Pages 7~30
The bibliometric analysis was conducted by searching 87 abstract & index databases provided by the DIALOG to identify not only the characteristics of Korean journals covered by international databases, but also the characteristics of the databases covering such Korean journals. 248 Korean journals were identified, for which at least one paper published between 1990 and 1997 was retrievable from the DIALOG databases. These Korean journals were found in 52 databases. 141 journals(56.9%) were indexed in only one database. Most Korean journals covered in several DIALOG databases were science and engineering journals published in English. The difference in the degrees Korean journals are covered in a database is found to be statistically significant by the discipline a database covers, and by the database's journal selection policy.
An Analysis of Access Points for Electronic Reference Service System Displayed on the Home Pages of Academic Libraries
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 16, issue 3, 1999, Pages 31~48
This study examines the access points for electronic reference service system displayed on the home pages of academic libraries. Library home pages of national/public and private universities were examined, and these were classified into three groups according to the methods of displaying access points on the homepages. The advantages and disadvantages of each group were discussed and some suggestions were made for the user-friendliness and accessibility for the electronic reference service.
Application of the 2-Poisson Model to Full-Text Information Retrieval System
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 16, issue 3, 1999, Pages 49~63
The purpose of this study is to investigate whether the terms in queries are distributed according to the 2-Poisson model in the documents represented by abstract/title or full-text. In this study, retrieval experiments using Binary independence and 2-Poisson independence model, which are based on the probabilistic theory, were conducted to see if the 2-Poisson distribution of the query terms has an influence on the retrieval effectiveness, particularly of full-text information retrieval system.
A Study of Word Sense Ambiguation which Affects Efficiency of the Internet-based Information Retrieval
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 16, issue 3, 1999, Pages 65~82
Internet users are often frustrated when they try to find“right”piece of information quickly. The reason is that the discovery of available and quality based-resources becomes more difficult to end users while the Internet continues to expand rapidly. Not only incorrect keywords and query expression but word sense ambiguation are the cause of dropping-off in efficiency on Internet search. In this paper, studies were conducted to analyze dropping off in efficiency fir Internet search and discussed reducing user s frustration of the Internet and improving their search strategies.
A Study on the Use of Electronic Grey Literature
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 16, issue 3, 1999, Pages 83~99
Grey literature which is dealing with the recent research outcomes has been neglected because of its difficulties in getting production information and collecting full-text. The research is about the characteristics, types and distribution tendencies of recently spot lighted electronic grey literature. It also analysed the current situation of producing and supplying the domestic electronic grey literature. The result showed that the level of providing the grey literature differed depending on the organization at present and, as a whole, didn't reach the level to fully satisfy the user's information needs. The research introduces the problems in utilizing electronic grey literature base on its results and specifically provides the ways to activate the use of grey literature.
Development of Multimedia Web Contents Search System for Natural History Museum
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 16, issue 3, 1999, Pages 101~115
In this paper, we described web content searching system focused on the natural monuments, the endangered and reserved wild animals, the rare wild animals relevant to CITES & IUCN red data book, and the Korean endemic species. As a result of this research, we developed system for inserting and modifying of contents and efficient web searching system on the multimedia contents.
The Cognitive Differences between the Processes Making Hyperlinking and Citing Decisions in Scholarly Environments: A Qualitative Study
Kim, Hak-Joon ;
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 16, issue 3, 1999, Pages 117~136
The purpose of this research was to investigate cognitive differences between the processes making hyperlinking and citing decisions as perceived by scholarly authors themselves. 15 Indiana University faculty and doctoral students who had published at least one scholarly electronic paper containing at least one external hyperlink were interviewed. Four different types of hyperlinking behaviors were emerged from the interview data. The findings of the study revealed that there are no consensually agreed-upon conventions on the use of hyperlinks in scholarly environments although the majority of the authors tend to follow the implicit norms of conventional citation practices.
An Analytical Study on Research Patterns in Library and Information Science
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 16, issue 3, 1999, Pages 137~158
This research dealt with author production, subject production, university production, core of the majoring subject production, the multi-authors production, authors majoring in their fields production, languages and periods production for the purpose of clarifying the general research pattern of us by using the method of content analysis of 767 items of monographic which have been published in Korea between 1957 and 1997. This study was done to apprehend the general research pattern of Library and Information Science.
