A Study on the Effects of Internet to Assist Collection Management of Library in the Computer Mediated Communication
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 16, issue 4, 1999, Pages 7~36
In this paper, we have studied the technical contribution of internet as a computer mediated communication(CMC) tool for collection management. A new communication process is appearing due to the development of information technology and telecommunications technology which enable users to have an access to information without the help of librarian. Also, internet makes collection management possible in the absence of vendors. This study found out that internet reinforces the traditional functions of collection management and enables librarians to better perform their roles. The future library manager should become actively involved in the development of technology in order to manage resources of internet focusing on the needs of user. Also, we have concluded that collection management should be modernized and transformed with its emphasis on the new evaluation method and assessment of quality when offering resources of internet in the communication process using computers.
A Design of XML DTD for Representation of the Internet Sheet Music
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 16, issue 4, 1999, Pages 37~52
In this paper, we propose a technique to represent a sheet music effectively on the Internet. For representing the Internet sheet music, this paper proposes the ScoreML(Score Markup Language) which is a new markup language based on XML, and describes the design of the XML DTD which defines the ScoreML. XML DTD constructing the ScoreML is designed to be able to represent various features of a sheet music in order to retrieve the real sheet music on the Internet. The sheet music built by the ScoreML is directly displayed on the Internet by ScoreML browser which is implemented in the form of Java applet.
A Study on the Application of Concept Mapping Techniques as Knowledge Acquisition and Knowledge Representation Tools
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 16, issue 4, 1999, Pages 53~74
This paper describes concept mapping techniques for eliciting and representing knowledge. Concept mapping techniques range from very informal to very formal. Informal concept mapping techniques are usually very easy to use and understand for humans, but not for computers. Formal concept mapping techniques are computational, but humans usually find them hard to understand and use. A knowledge acquisition and representation tools which handle both kinds, and the transition from informal to formal, would be very useful. It is proposed that concept maps be regarded as basic components of any knowledge-based system, complementing text and image with formal and informl active diagrams.
A Study on Indexing Method using Text Partition
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 16, issue 4, 1999, Pages 75~94
Indexing is a prerequisite function for the information retrieval system in order to retrieve the information of the documents effectively which are saved in database. As a digital data increases in accordance with the development of a computer, the numbers of literatures to be saved in database have also been increased in a large volume. To retrieve such documents of large volume, a lot of system resources and processing time will be required. In this paper, we suggest a advanced indexing method using text partition. This method can retrieve the documents of large volume in short processing time. We applied this suggested indexing method to real information retrieval system, and proved its excellent functions through the demonstration.
Regional Color Feature Analysis for Content-based Image Retrieval
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 16, issue 4, 1999, Pages 95~107
Various approaches have been made for dividing images in content-based image retrieval. One of them defined five regions for images and conducted a series of experiments. A major assumption of the experiment is that the center regions of images are very important. It is based on the observation that meaningful objects are usually located in the center region of images. From this point of view, we tried to test if the assumptions is objectively valid by calculating and comparing PIM(Picture Information Measure) entropies of image regions proposed by S.K Chang. The experimental results showed that there were statistical PIM differences between the center and other regions.
A Study on the Model of Internet Public Library in Korea (IPL-Korea)
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 16, issue 4, 1999, Pages 109~123
We are faced with a paradox in the age of information as finding quality information on the Internet becomes a more challenging task because of information overload. This paper describes the prototype for “IPL-Korea” (Internet Public Library in Korea) project which is an attempt to provide the public with quality information in the form of a metadata system. The system involves cataloging of resources, i.e. websites, that are filtered by library and information science majors as well as information professionals. The user focus of this system is on children, youth, women, and seniors; various classification schemes and resource descriptions relevant for each user group are incorporated into the system to allow efficient browsing of the resources. A thesaurus for “IPL-Korea”, which is based on the ERIC thesaurus, is being constructed for easy manipulation of the breath of searching. The “IPL-Korea” metadata system employs the entity-relationship model in the design of its conceptual schema. Metadata is being stored in the Oracle database system and Web interfaces to this database are provided through ASP, ColdFusion, and JAVA technology.
Analysis on User Interface in Information Retrieval Systems
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 16, issue 4, 1999, Pages 125~150
This study reviews various aspects of design of user interfaces in interactive information retrieval systems. Specially the study examines, 1) search related interfaces such as query processing, search strategies, and multilingual processing, and 2) browsing related interfaces such as document browsing and search result browsing. The main goals of this review are to characterize user interface techniques in information retrieval systems and to suggest potential future research direction and challenges.
