A Study on the Development of Distributed Bibliographic Information Search System Using CORBA and JAVA
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 17, issue 1, 2000, Pages 7~20
The study attempts to propose a distributed bibliographic information retrieval system using distributed retrieval servers and distributed databases. CORBA and JAVA applications have been employed to solve both the bottleneck and the problems that simultaneous searches in distributed databases cannot deal with under the CGI or JAVA applications. The proposed distributed bibliographic retrieval system using two distributed servers with their distributed databases was successfully experimented. However, it is recommended that both heterogeneous information retrieval systems and databases are included in further studies.
A Study on Designing Schemata with RDF for Interoperability of Metadata Formats
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 17, issue 1, 2000, Pages 21~47
Keeping the semantic interoperability between different formats is very important for reuseing and consistently processing metadata. This article is to design common schema and KORMARC schema based on RDF schema. For this, common elements are made by comparison of Dublin Core elements and KORMARC fields. The schema of these elements is designed for construction of semantic interoperability, basing RDF schema specification and syntax specification. Eventually, the semantic interoperability between a number of metadata formats can be constructed by matching the common elements to each attribute of format. KORMARC schema is designed by the application of common schema.
Evaluation of Korean Medical Journals: a Bibliometric Analysis
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 17, issue 1, 2000, Pages 49~65
The availability and use (citedness) of Korean medical journals are measured based on the bibliometric data of 82 journals evaluated by the Korean Association of Medical Journal Editors between 1997 and 1999. A Korean medical journal is held on the average by one half of Korean medical libraries investigated. Only 10 journals (12.2%) are covered in any of 36 abstract and index databases in the field of medicine searchable through DIALOG. The journal self-citation rate is 3.402%. 1.092% of papers are cited at least once by SCI journal papers within 3 years after publication. The average SCI impact factor of Korean medical journals is 0.111, However, the impact factor of MEDLINE or SCISearch journals is 10 times higher. The results show that the Korean medical journals are not easily available domestically and internationally. They are hardly cited by Korean colleagues or by foreign scholars either.
Implementation and Evaluation of Integrated Viewier for Displanning Text and TIFF Image Materials on the Internet Environments
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 17, issue 1, 2000, Pages 67~87
The purpose of the study is to develop an integrated viewer which can display both text and image files on the Internet environment. Up to now, most viewers for full-text databases can be displayed documents only by image or graphic viewers. The newly developed system can compress document files in commercial word processors (e.g, 한글TM, WordTM, ExceITM, PowerpointTM, HunminJungumTM, ArirangTM, CADTM), as well as conventional TIFF image file in smaller size, which were converted into DVI(DeVice Independent) file format, and display them on computer screen. IDoc Viewer was evaluated to test its performance by user group, consisting of 5 system developers, 5 librarians, and 10 end-users. IDoc Viewer has been proved to be good or excellent at 20 out of 26 check lists.
Performance Evaluation of Commercial Document Delivery Suppliers Accessible through the Internet
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 17, issue 1, 2000, Pages 89~101
In recent years the service of commercial document delivery has mutured in the library and information field. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the performance of the major document delivery suppliers accessible through the internet. Actual article requests in science and technology were sampled systematically and forwarded to the suppliers selected. Processing data was collected and analyzed in terms of fill rate, delivery time, and cost. Method of delivery was also a criteria of analysis. Results shows that the performance of the commercial suppliers varies according to the criteria. And the knowledge about vendor services and citation verification are important factors affecting the document delivery capability. Finally recommendations based on the results are briefly examined.
Internet Database Retrieval Efficiency vs. DIALOG Retrieval Efficiency
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 17, issue 1, 2000, Pages 103~127
This study compared finding economic and energy information on the WWW to finding the same information on DIALOG, a traditional search service. Professional searchers answered 20 questions for end users using either of DIALOG and one Internet database (general search engine or Web database). The relevance of the results in both sets of answers was ranked by searchers and end-users, respectively. The study found that searching for information on the Web took at least twice as long as it did when using DIALOG. Relevance rating was a little higher for materials found on DIALOG. However, the relevance rating difference between two systems was not so higher than we expected. From the research results, we conclude that Internet database including Web database and general search engines is providing valuable information of economic and energy subject areas.
A Study on the Applicability of 2-Poisson Model for Selecting Korean Subject Words
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 17, issue 1, 2000, Pages 129~148
Experiments were performed on three subsets of a Korean test collection in order to determine whether 2-Poisson model's Z value is a good measure for selecting subject words from a document to be indexed. It was found that subject word selection based on the Z value was effective for only one subset with short texts, i.e., the Science and Technology subset. Correlation analyses between 2-Poisson model's Z and TF.IDF weight for the three subsets showed that the correlation was relatively high for two test subsets with short texts, i.e., the Science and Technology subset and the Newspaper subset.
A Study on the Web Site Development Methodology for Effective Web Site
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 17, issue 1, 2000, Pages 149~165
Developing the web-based information service sites requires their own developing methodology, because the process of the web sites development become more complicate and Internet surroundings are changing rapidly. They should control all components of the system for effective and efficient web services. However there is little clear concept about systematic development and management of web service sites, in the Korean Internet service sectors, especially in information service sectors. The research analyse current situation and necessity of developing methodology, and suggest new approach for developing new methodology of the web business/service sites.
