National statistical data such a\ulcorner Korcan Census is lundamenlal data roc national ndm~n~slrat~on. In this papw we present an automa5c coding system utilizing marpl~alog~cal analyaer and knowledge dictiona~ies. Knowledg bases are constructed based oo an authority dictionar~rs which were developed by authors iltil~ring a ncwly ieamillg lhcoq. Test data indicales 99.5% of productwity am1 83.3% oi'accmacy. The pesented methods can be ckctlvely appllcd lo analyze statislical inSolmation.

Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 17, issue 4, 2000, Pages 27~45
This study is an attemp1 to analyze h e lndiridual merit of the INSTRAT model, whlch h n s a cognltlvc process paradigm, and lhal of the Big6 model, which involves a lunct~onal approach. as tools for enhancing human m~ormation activities and qtitude. The lormcr wds cxamii~ed tluough logical inte~pretations, while the latter was deduced f~om interviews usmg tlie Micro-Momenl Tme-LIII~ method, a key me~hodology used in the Sense-Mahg Approaches. An Study on the Performance of the Concept-Based Information Retrieval Model Using a Relation of Thesaurus
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 17, issue 4, 2000, Pages 47~65
This study aims lo enhance the perfor~nance 01 concept-based information retr~eval through the use of the lraditional thesaurus which, clearly delmes relalions among terms. To achwe lhls, thc study purports to construcl relation-value-based, relalion-bad, and inlegated kumwledge bases tluough the use ol ihc lhcsau~ub. To cornpale and a~alyze retrieval perlor~nance among knowledge bases, two methods weue al~plied. Sequential bnb algorithm is ap~lied to the I-clation-ualue-based and intzgralcd knowledge base while heuristic bnb algorithm is applied to the relal~on-based knowlcdgc base.
A Study on the Measurement of the system effectiveness with ranked results
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 17, issue 4, 2000, Pages 67~81
This study discussed why Precision(& Recall) is not a good effectiveness measurement of IR system providing ranked results, reviewed other effectiveness measurements appropriate for ranked results, and proposed new measurements based on the average rank of relevant documents retrieved. The 18 case-sets of ranked results were used for evaluating 10 effectiveness measurements including proposed measurements. Simple measurements were significantly similar with the 11-Point Precision requiring complicated calculation.

A Study of an XML DTD Design of Theses and Dissertations
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 17, issue 4, 2000, Pages 113~135
XML, a flexible and concise inarkup language designed to solve bolh the limitation of HTML and the complexit), of SGMI., has capacily to erchamge and search documenls elfeclively using the DTD structures on the Web. The prmary ob]eclire of this paper is to design an XML DTD based on the analysis or Ihe logical slructure ol 24 theses and diwz~lat~ons in (he fleld or natural science, engmeermg, humanities. and social science. A Study on the Development of Reference Linking System Based on Digital Object Identifier for Korean Journal Articles
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 17, issue 4, 2000, Pages 207~227
Recenily, major internalional STM(Science, Trchnical, and Mcdivine) Publichers have been developing prototype systems that can provide the refeence linking of jouinal articles within the scholarly literature on a cross-publisher basis using the URN(Universal Resouree Name). In Korea, it is hard to find the efforts to link the scattered digitalized documents to an individual user through a unified web. In this study, a linking model for an inergrated gatewny fro, bibliographic information to full tcxt has been desugned and 'Electronic Research Resourced Linking system (E3R/LS)' has been developed as a prototype for centralized static reference linking system. There are three major components for constructing refrernce linking systems. The firsl componcnt the Digital Object Identifiet(DO1). is introduced as the public identifier inrended to be applied wherever thr item needs to be identified. For denl~iymg Korean journal articles, llie extended SICI(Serlal Ilem and Conlribut~on Idealifier) has becn newly dehed in 1111s study and is used as a suiiia on DOI. The reierence datubasc conlams the second com~onenl, metadiltil, linkcd to implemenied by all information providers. The CnRI resolution system is used for resolving a DOI into a URL as the third component.
An Experimental Study on Text Categorization using an SVM Classifier
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 17, issue 4, 2000, Pages 229~248
Among several learning algorithms for lexl calegoriration. SVM(Snpport Vsctor Machines) has been provcd to ouq~e~fotm other classifiers. Th~study e~~aluales the categarizalion ability of en SVM classifier using the ModApte split of the Reutcrs-21578 dataset. First. an experiment 1s perlormed to test a few feature wetghtlng schemes that will be used in thc calegarization tasks. Second, (he categorization periarrnances of the lulear SVM and the non-linear SVM are compared. Finally. the binary SVM classifier is expanded into a multi-class classifier and thek pcrforrnnnces are comparativcly evaluated.
