Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 20, issue 1, 2003, Pages 5~29
DOI : 10.3743/KOSIM.2003.20.1.005
University libraries have developed digital information resources for digital services and have tried to preserve valuable digital information. Because digital preservation raises challenges of a fundamentally different nature which we added to the problems to preserving traditional format materials, it is necessary that preserving digital resources must be discussed and researched actively. This study conducts risk management for exploring preserving technologies and assessing tools. It is found that most university libraries have used format conversion frequently and do not use the emulation technology. It is also found that medium refreshing has the lowest risk probability and isk impact, but information migration and emulation technology have the highest in the risk probability and in the risk impact individually and the absence of full-time professional staff causes high risk.

In order to analyze degree of theory use of LIS, such as, publication productivity, growth and distribution of theory in subfields. name and origin of theory, usability of each theory, subfields and journals, and so on, content analysis of LIS theories was performed through conceptual and empirical study. For the purpose of this study, we suggested a couple of new analytical methods, so called, ‘Subfield Classification Scheme’ within LIS, and ‘5 Degrees of Theory Use’ model for the first time.
A Study on the Shera′s sociological aspect of librarianship.
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 20, issue 1, 2003, Pages 199~230
DOI : 10.3743/KOSIM.2003.20.1.199
The purpose of this study is on the Shera`s sociological aspect of librarianship. Jesse H. Shera, educator, philosopher, and theoretician, considered that perhaps his most significant contribution to librarianship was not a “thing” but a “concept”. Library was created to meet certain social necessities, and that its development is closely related not only to intellectual history but also to change in the organizational structure and the value system of its supporting culture. It is axiomatic, then, that the library as a social instrumentality. is, as it has always been, conditioned and shaped by the social milieu within which it function. Therefore we are concerned with the need for a new epistemological discipline, a body of new about knowledge itself.
A Study on the Campus-wide Partnership for the Development of information Literacy Instruction Program
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 20, issue 1, 2003, Pages 231~250
DOI : 10.3743/KOSIM.2003.20.1.231
The rapid advances in information technologies have resulted in not only the proliferation of the amount of information available but also the variety of information formats. Information literacy is the set of skills needed to find, retrieve, analyze, and use information. Therefore, information literacy which should be the core goal of the university education has been a new trend of the library instruction. Nevertheless, despite the increasing Interest in the information literacy. there has been little discussion about educational Programs. and there has been little coordination between faculty and librarians on the programs. Under such circumstances, campus-wide teamwork is needed so that the library instruction can become part of the entire learning Processes of university education. This Paper presents an overview of the models adopted by foreign university libraries and also analyses the successful cases of the campus-wide partnership of each model of information literacy programs. Based on these. the outline of the needed procedure for the enforcement of the information literacy in the university of our country is suggested.

Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 20, issue 1, 2003, Pages 417~455
DOI : 10.3743/KOSIM.2003.20.1.417
Ontologies are formal theories that are suitable for implementing the semantic web. which is a new technology that attempts to achieve effective retrieval, integration, and reuse of web resources. Ontologies provide a way of sharing and reusing knowledge among people and heterogeneous applications systems. The role of ontologies is that of making explicit specified conceptualizations. In this context, domain and generic ontologies can be shared, reused, and integrated in the analysis and design stage of information and knowledge systems. This study aims to design an ontology for international organizations. and build an Internet web retrieval system based on the proposed ontology. and finally conduct an experiment to compare the system performance of the proposed system with that of internet search engines focusing relevance and searching time. This study found that average relevance of ontology-based searching and Internet search engines are 4.53 and 2.51, and average searching time of ontology-based searching and Internet search engines are 1.96 minutes and 4.74 minutes.
