A Study on the Extend Guideline for the Equivalence Relationship in Thesaurus
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 21, issue 2, 2004, Pages 1~21
DOI : 10.3743/KOSIM.2004.21.2.001
For the guarantee of retrieval ratio, thesaurus's maintenance for descriptors are necessary. To maintain the optimum scale of thesaurus, new terms and existing terms should be structured to the equivalence relationship. Therefore, equivalence relationships are needed to new standard. This study proposes new standard of the equivalence relationships, which is more specified for better guarantee of retrieval ratios. The relationships have seven facets. These six facets will be used as new knowledge-base, which could be reestablished between the descriptors.
Understanding the Use of Community Informatics: A Structural Equation Modeling Approach
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 21, issue 2, 2004, Pages 23~44
DOI : 10.3743/KOSIM.2004.21.2.023
This study proposed a theoretical framework that could explain the service use of a community informatics. The proposed community informatics use model was developed based on three theoretical models: (1) Ajzen's Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) from social psychology: (2) Uses and gratifications approaches from media use research; and (3) Technology Acceptance Model(TAM) from information technology use research. The proposed model consists of three basic components: expectations of the outcomes from use, approvals from important others, and perceivied controllability over using the service. The initially proposed model was assessed using structural equation modeling, and then re-sepcified in order to propose a better fitting model. The initially proposed and revised community informatics use models were discussed with their theoretical and practical implications.
Analysis of Evaluation Indicators for the Development of Evaluation Models of Foreign Academic Journals

A Study on the Organizing Web Materials in the Field of Medicine
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 21, issue 2, 2004, Pages 89~106
DOI : 10.3743/KOSIM.2004.21.2.089
There are lots of Web materials in the field of medicine and many search engines classify the medical materials on the Web through directories. But the organization of these directories are wanting in consistency and systematization. In order for manager of search engines to organize medical materials on the Web systematically, this paper suggests several guidelines. NLMC, a special classification system for medicine, need to be applied to develop directories of medicine in search engines. Also, items of the directories should be arranged based on the relevance of subjects among subfields of medical science. For classifying an item to several directories repeatedly, clear criteria should be established. In addition to, controlled vocabularies or glossaries for medicine such as MeSH and the English-Korean, Korean-English Medical Terminology Collection should be used for selection of the name of items in medical directories.

A Study on the Analysis of Informational Structure of University Websites
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 21, issue 2, 2004, Pages 127~152
DOI : 10.3743/KOSIM.2004.21.2.127
In the current information environment, the concept of a website has been transformed from the repository of information to means of accessing information which can communicate and interact with users. To function well as an accessing tool to information, the information embedded in a website should be organized in a way that users can easily understand the whole informational structure. This aspect of a website might be more important to a university's website. However, the informational structures which current university's websites adopt do not reflect their users' information needs. They construct their structure uniformly, and it causes the decrease of the websites' usability. To solve these problems, this study proposes a new and systematical way of constructing a university's website which can reflect users' information needs and ensure the usability of the websites.

Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 21, issue 2, 2004, Pages 189~210
DOI : 10.3743/KOSIM.2004.21.2.189
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the performance of XML retrieval based on ORDBMSs(Object-Relational Database Management Systems) approach. This paper describes indexing and retrieval methods for XML documents and the methodologies of experiments at INEX(Initiative for the Evaluation of XML retrieval). Like any other traditional information retrieval experiment, the test collection was consists of documents, topics/queries, task, relevance assessments and evaluation. EXIMA
Supply, a kind of native XML DB based on ORDBMS technologies, is used for this experiment. Although this approach has many benefits, for example, no delay in storing and searching XML documents. but it showed relatively disappointed retrieval performance at INEX 2002. This result may caused since the given topics had to be decomposed and modified to be processed by the XPath processor, and during this modification the original meaning of topics can be changed inevitably and some important information nay pass over.r.

Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 21, issue 2, 2004, Pages 211~233
DOI : 10.3743/KOSIM.2004.21.2.211
The web is a new information environment, which has different characteristics from a traditional IR environment. Needed are more research from a new point of view as well as the adoption of a new research paradigm in order to understand a user-system interaction on the web. The purpose of this study is to review and analyze models of web-based information seeking behavior, which Wang, Hawk ＆ Tenopir, Hsieh-Yee, Choo, Detlor ＆ Turnbull, Chun ＆ Cooper, Rieh, and Spink proposed. The comparative analysis indicates that web-based information seeking models are categorized into three area: interaction model, information seeking behavior model, and evaluation model, and that they are based on a multifaceted interaction and a nonlinear perspective.
Web Information Retrieval based on Natural Language Query Analysis and Keyword Expansion
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 21, issue 2, 2004, Pages 235~248
DOI : 10.3743/KOSIM.2004.21.2.235
For the users of information retrieval systems, natural language query is the more ideal interface, compared with keyword and boolean expressions. This paper proposes a retrieval technique with expanded keyword from syntactically-analyzed structures of natural language query as user input. Through the steps combining or splitting the compound nouns based on syntactic tree traversal of the query, and expanding the other-formed or shorten-formed into multiple keyword, it can enhance the precision and correctness of the retrieval system.
A Study of Ontology-based Cataloguing System Using OWL
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 21, issue 2, 2004, Pages 249~267
DOI : 10.3743/KOSIM.2004.21.2.249
Although MARC can define the detail cataloguing data, it has complex structures and frameworks to represent bibliographic information. On account of these idiosyncratic features of MARC, XML DTD or RDF/S that supports simple hierarchy of conceptual vocabularies cannot capture MARC formalism effectively. This study implements bibliographic ontology by means of abstracting conceptual relationships between bibliographic vocabularies of MARC. The bibliographic ontology is formalized with OWL that can represent the logical relations between conceptual elements and specify cardinality and property value restrictions. The bibliographic ontology in this study will provide metadata for cataloguing data and resolve compatibility problems between cataloguing systems. And it can also contribute the development of next generation bibliographic information system using semantic Web services.
