Jeong, Ki-Tai ; Park, Il-Jong ;
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 21, issue 3, 2004, Pages 1~14
DOI : 10.3743/KOSIM.2004.21.3.001
Visualization of documents will help users when they do search similar documents. and all research in information retrieval addresses itself to the problem of a user with an information need facing a data source containing an acceptable solution to that need. In various contexts. adequate solutions to this problem have included alphabetized cubbyholes housing papyrus rolls. microfilm registers. card catalogs and inverted files coded onto discs. Many information retrieval systems rely on the use of a document surrogate. Though they might be surprise to discover it. nearly every information seeker uses an array of document surrogates. Summaries. tables of contents. abstracts. reviews, and MARC recordsthese are all document surrogates. That is, they stand infor a document allowing a user to make some decision regarding it. whether to retrieve a book from the stacks, whether to read an entire article, etc. In this paper another type of document surrogate is investigated using a grouping method of term list. lising Multidimensional Scaling Method (MDS) those surrogates are visualized on two-dimensional graph. The distances between dots on the two-dimensional graph can be represented as the similarity of the documents. More close the distance. more similar the documents.

DOI : 10.3743/KOSIM.2004.21.3.015
With the rapid growth of information technology and the internet. the physical contents are transformed into digital contents at a fast rate. With the change. accessing the digital contents, toe service methods and the identifier used for the digital contents are not systematic and limited for use. The DOI identifier system used for the URN is also limited to academic journals or magazines and are not adequately applicable for non-academic journal or digital contents. Therefore. we have developed a unique identifier based on the analysis made on the system adopted by foreign digital contents service institutes. two types of academic journals 3 types of non-academic journals owned by KISTI that can be adopted by non-academic journals. The identifier is to be used to design and implement a digital contents service system.

The electronic documents have the documental aspect that can legible by human and the electronic aspect that can be interpreted and processed automatically by machinery. This usability of electronic documents must be the reason that people use them in almost all the business areas rapidly in these days. That is because we have to utilize the characteristics to interchange electronic documents(EDI) effectively and efficiently. The electronic document interchange of Korean government cannot make the best of this benefit due to the traditional way of thinking based on paper document and the viewpoint of individual business, organization. and project. This paper proposed a direction of ED! for Korean government. At first. the concept of electronic docuemnts is defined. The reason and limitations of structuring the documents with XML and the hidden problems of present ED! in Korean public sector are also explained. And the way to preserve information, to design the structure of electronic document. and to maintain relevant standards is proposed.

Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 21, issue 3, 2004, Pages 227~250
DOI : 10.3743/KOSIM.2004.21.3.227
In order to design effective electronic records management systems, it is viable to consider both traditional principles of records management, proven to be effective, and the characteristics of digital information. ISO 15489, an international standard for records management, is acknowledged as the most useful guidelines for this goal. The present study extracted basic principles of electronic records management from its provisions of 7 functional steps. It then compared the principles to system requirements of three system design criterion, developed by Department of Defense(U.S.A.) Public Records Office(Britain). and European Union respectively. Common requirements, included in all three criterion. were then searched in the Korean standard of developing automated systems for records centers. Finally, suggestions were made to develop a Korean standard for electronic records management system, elaborating from the core requirements of the system found by the present study.

Han, Seung-Hee ; Chung, Young-Mee ;
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 21, issue 3, 2004, Pages 251~267
DOI : 10.3743/KOSIM.2004.21.3.251
The purpose of this study is to generate the local level knowledge structure of a single document, similar to end-of-the-book indexes and table of contents of printed material through the use of term clustering and cluster representative term selection. Furthermore, it aims to analyze the functionalities of the knowledge structure. and to confirm the applicability of these methods in user-friend1y information services. The results of the term clustering experiment showed that the performance of the Ward`s method was superior to that of the fuzzy K -means clustering method. In the cluster representative term selection experiment, using the highest passage frequency term as the representative yielded the best performance. Finally, the result of user task-based functionality tests illustrate that the automatically generated knowledge structure in this study functions similarly to the local level knowledge structure presented In printed material.

An Experimental Study on Multi-Document Summarization for Question Answering
Choi, Sang-Hee ; Chung, Young-Mee ;
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 21, issue 3, 2004, Pages 289~303
DOI : 10.3743/KOSIM.2004.21.3.289
This experimental study proposes a multi-document summarization method that produces optimal summaries in which users can find answers to their queries. In order to identify the most effective method for this purpose, the performance of the three summarization methods were compared. The investigated methods are sentence clustering, passage extraction through spreading activation, and clustering-passage extraction hybrid methods. The effectiveness of each summarizing method was evaluated by two criteria used to measure the accuracy and the redundancy of a summary. The passage extraction method using the sequential bnb search algorithm proved to be most effective in summarizing multiple documents with regard to summarization precision. This study proposes the passage extraction method as the optimal multi-document summarization method.
