Relevance Feedback based on Medicine Ontology for Retrieval Performance Improvement
Lim, Soo-Yeon ;
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 22, issue 2, 2005, Pages 41~56
DOI : 10.3743/KOSIM.2005.22.2.041
For the purpose of extending the Web that is able to understand and process information by machine, Semantic Web shared knowledge in the ontology form. For exquisite query processing, this paper proposes a method to use semantic relations in the ontology as relevance feedback information to query expansion. We made experiment on pharmacy domain. And in order to verify the effectiveness of the semantic relation in the ontology, we compared a keyword based document retrieval system that gives weights by using the frequency information compared with an ontology based document retrieval system that uses relevant information existed in the ontology to a relevant feedback. From the evaluation of the retrieval performance. we knew that search engine used the concepts and relations in ontology for improving precision effectively. Also it used them for the basis of the inference for improvement the retrieval performance.
A Study on Bliss's Bibliographic Classification
Nam, Tae-Woo ; Yoo, Kwang-Yeon ;
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 22, issue 2, 2005, Pages 57~85
DOI : 10.3743/KOSIM.2005.22.2.057
Bliss stated that one of the purposes of the classification was to demonstrate that a coherent and comprehensive system, based on the logical principles of classification and consistent with the systems of science and education, may be available to services in libraries, to aid revision of long established classifications and to provide an adaptable, efficient and economical classification, notation and index. A fundamental principle is the idea of subordination each specific subject is subordinated to the appropriate general one. The full scheme followed the publication of two massive theoretical works on the organization of knowledge. Its main feature was the carefully designed maul class order. reflecting Comte principle of gradation in speciality.

DOI : 10.3743/KOSIM.2005.22.2.103
This study analyzed the web style guide of five foreign university library web sites and extracted the web site components of main university libraries in ten domestic areas and then drew the common factors from the components. This study also found out the unity and rule in the general design trends of university library web sites. In order to do this, the results for the usability and accessibility of university library web sites were applied to this study. And being based on it. this study presents the web style guide components of the university libraries which are the factors to endow the web site with the consistently visual identity.
Improving the Retrieval Effectiveness by Incorporating Word Sense Disambiguation Process
Chung, Young-Mee ; Lee, Yong-Gu ;
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 22, issue 2, 2005, Pages 125~145
DOI : 10.3743/KOSIM.2005.22.2.125
This paper presents a semantic vector space retrieval model incorporating a word sense disambiguation algorithm in an attempt to improve retrieval effectiveness. Nine Korean homonyms are selected for the sense disambiguation and retrieval experiments. The total of approximately 120,000 news articles comprise the raw test collection and 18 queries including homonyms as query words are used for the retrieval experiments. A Naive Bayes classifier and EM algorithm representing supervised and unsupervised learning algorithms respectively are used for the disambiguation process. The Naive Bayes classifier achieved
disambiguation accuracy. while the clustering performance of the EM algorithm is
on the average. The retrieval effectiveness of the semantic vector space model incorporating the Naive Bayes classifier showed
precision achieving about
improvement. However, the retrieval effectiveness of the EM algorithm-based semantic retrieval is
lower than the baseline retrieval without disambiguation. It is worth noting that the performances of disambiguation and retrieval depend on the distribution patterns of homonyms to be disambiguated as well as the characteristics of queries.
A Study of Standard Model for Electronic Document Archiving
Lee, Won-Young ; Kang, Jin-Young ;
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 22, issue 2, 2005, Pages 147~164
DOI : 10.3743/KOSIM.2005.22.2.147
Requirements concerning production of electronic documents and storage are stipulated in the act on document management of public institutions revised in 2003. However, provisions or standards for long term preservation of electronic documents are insufficient and in need of strengthening. This study aims to provide standard factors for long term preservation of electronic documents and thus lay foundation for long term preservation related matters for the establishment of management strategy, ISO 15489 management factor is analyzed as a necessary framework for long term preservation of electronic record at a production stage. Preservation description information is derived from ISO 14721 which is suggesting document management systems to archival institutions. Through this case study, standard registry factors reflecting ISO 15489 and 14721's are suggested in an attempt to improve the act and system environment for long term preservation and archiving.

Kim, Hee-Sop ; Jung, Young-Mi ;
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 22, issue 2, 2005, Pages 165~184
DOI : 10.3743/KOSIM.2005.22.2.165
Value and importance of online information are increased day by day as the knowledge and information society is emerging. However there is little study on information assessments due to the lack of the valid methodologies and models in this field. In this study we proposed a model of the economic value assessments for online information and utilized it to the contents of ITFIND which is an integrated IT information system supported by the MIC(Ministry of Information and Communication). We measured information value of ITFIND as follows: (1) both 'use value' and 'exchange value,' (2) annual
per person by the category of each information, and (3) annual economic value of
of ITFIND information based on it's users' annual

Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 22, issue 2, 2005, Pages 205~228
DOI : 10.3743/KOSIM.2005.22.2.205
This research analyzed changes of the intellectual structure of web information by examining time changes and search engines using the co-links analysis. According to the results, the co-links web information clusters on the two maps appeared to contain changes in the intellectual structure over the two time periods. The intellectual structure that appeared in the information map for AltaVista and MSN Search engines was relatively similar. However. there were also cases where the clusters of some web information was different. The results of the research revealed that the cocitation analysis could be applied simultaneously to diachronous analysis in the web information.
