An Experimental Study on Automatic Summarization of Multiple News Articles
Kim, Yong-Kwang ; Chung, Young-Mee ;
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 23, issue 1, 2006, Pages 83~98
DOI : 10.3743/KOSIM.2006.23.1.083
This study proposes a template-based method of automatic summarization of multiple news articles using the semantic categories of sentences. First, the semantic categories for core information to be included in a summary are identified from training set of documents and their summaries. Then, cue words for each slot of the template are selected for later classification of news sentences into relevant slots. When a news article is input, its event/accident category is identified, and key sentences are extracted from the news article and filled in the relevant slots. The template filled with simple sentences rather than original long sentences is used to generate a summary for an event/accident. In the user evaluation of the generated summaries, the results showed the 54.l% recall ratio and the 58.l% precision ratio in essential information extraction and 11.6% redundancy ratio.

Kim, Sung-Won ; Kim, Tae-Soo ;
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 23, issue 1, 2006, Pages 99~119
DOI : 10.3743/KOSIM.2006.23.1.099
The most widely used information searching method in the current internet environment is the keyword-based one, which has certain limitations in terms of precision and recall. Most major internet portals provide directory-based searching as a means to complement these limitations. However, that they adopt different classification schemes brings significant inconvenience to the users, and it consequently suggests a need to develop mapping gateway to provide cross-portal, or cross-directory information searching. In this context, this study attempts to develop a prototype system of intermediary gateway for integrated search, using the directory services of three major portals, Naver, Yahoo and Empas, and test its performance.

Jung, Hye-Kyung ; Jung, Eun-Joo ;
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 23, issue 1, 2006, Pages 121~138
DOI : 10.3743/KOSIM.2006.23.1.121
This study attempts to derive an economic analysis model for journal evaluation and conducts a case analysis based on the model. Total costs are calculated and include administrative fees (such as binding, ordering, claiming, etc.) and subscription costs. The model quantifies qualitative benefits to users, a utility that combines usage data that has also been evaluated in the existing economic analysis models. The model is designed by the usage statistics of the web-based electronic journals, which have become important resources for research. Rankings are assigned based on how items are utilized to the goal of the mother institution. In the case study based on the KDI School Library, the highest ranking off was assigned to journals that patrons used for citation in their outputs. For journals that were used background information, i.e., full text downloading or browsing , each was assigned ranking of 2 and 1, respectively. According to the analysis, the top 20 journals provided 75% of the entire library utility, showing different user behaviors among different cohorts. We expect that the model makes it possible for librarians to measure the value of journals. It can provide a basic tool for journal selection, particularly in special libraries with custom needs.

Nam, Young-Joon ; Jeong, Eui-Seop ;
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 23, issue 1, 2006, Pages 221~241
DOI : 10.3743/KOSIM.2006.23.1.221
This research suggested a new patent index based on patent citation technique using cited information, For this purpose, comparison research on library and patent information related citation database providing citation index was done. The information quality and meaning on the impact factor of JCR and the technology factor of CHI were reinterpreted. The former emphasizes the quality of continuous publication using relative citation frequency. The latter only emphasizes the information itself because it assesses the quality of patent characteristics. To overcome these difficulties, the latter re-authorized a relative quality to the organization possessing the patent using technology impact factor. Three new patent index were proposed on the basis of cited information to complement this. However, the comparative object was limited to American patent information that presented cited information of patent applied cases, and the comparison and research of domestic patent information could not be done.
User Evaluation to the Factors Affecting the Traditional Functions of Academic Libraries
Park, Il-Jong ; Shin, Sang-Heun ;
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 23, issue 1, 2006, Pages 243~259
DOI : 10.3743/KOSIM.2006.23.1.243
This paper examines the values of various library functions according to users` points of view. To execute this study, the several `circumstance`, related variables and `condition` variables that lead to factors or functions of academic libraries were measured. Analysis was carried out in three stages. In the first, factor analysis was used on the three multi variable dimensions to ensure that the groups of variables loaded significantly and uniquely on the respective dimensions. The second phase of analysis involved the use of binary logistic regression analysis to complete research models. In the third phase, t-test was used to identify significant differences in the independent variables for additional explanation of the models. Books, competition & effectiveness and fee verses free (fee-free hereafter) are the three main factors that distinguish not only the purpose of using an academic library but also the degree of influence on knowledge, information and library facilities for the users. In addition, the fee-free factor related to digital library facilities was also uncovered.

Lee, Keon-Sik ;
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 23, issue 1, 2006, Pages 335~352
DOI : 10.3743/KOSIM.2006.23.1.335
Since 2000, the Ministry of Information and Communication has spearhead the so-called Knowledge Information Resource Management Project to turn South Korea into an information-knowledge powerhouse. With the project, the ministry has digitalized major information content in various fields such as history, education, culture and science, enabling many people to benefit through the Internet. During the period,12 institutions have participated in the history fields, The participants are as follows: Muncheongak at Gyeongsang National University, Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, National Institute of Korean History, Independence Hall of Korea, Korean Classics Research Insitute, Korea Democracy Foundation, Gyujanggak Archives, Seoul National University, Jongyeonggak, Sungkyunkwan University, The War Memorial of Korea, Korean Studies Advancement Center, Korean Women`s Development Institute, and The Academy of Korean Studies. Because the 12 information systems have different functional user interfaces, it is confusing for people to utilize them effectively That requires us to standardize the interfaces, which would improve the overall improvement in effectiveness. This paper compares each user interface of the 12 information systems to determine their similarities and differences in terms of how to search information and present results. This work will pave the way to build a standardized user interface .
