Identifying the Usefulness of Weblog Genre Analysis in Organizational knowledge Creation: A Social Construction of Technology Perspective
Park, Ji-Hong ;
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 25, issue 1, 2008, Pages 5~17
DOI : 10.3743/KOSIM.2008.25.1.005
The purpose of this paper is to identify the usefulness of Weblog genre analysis in knowledge creation within an organization where communications are occurred frequently among the employees with information and communication technologies (ICTs). Knowledge creation is essential to achieve competitive advantage in today's knowledge-oriented working environments. There has been huge investment on knowledge management systems to achieve such advantages. It is, however, widely recognized that distributed knowledge management systems often fail due to the different social contexts across the sub-organizations where the local information systems are deployed. It is important to coordinate such social gaps across the sub-organizations to achieve better advantages. Given that Weblogs users often feel a shared social norm. Weblogs playa positive role of narrowing the social gaps. This paper argues that the genre analysis of Web logs could provide important clues to narrow the social gaps existed across the sub-organizations within an organization. Hence, such taxonomical practice may be a solution for the high rate of failure in knowledge management system implementations in an organization. This paper uses the theory of organizational knowledge creation (Nonaka & Takeuchi. 1995) and social construction of technology (SCOT) approach (Bijker, 1995) to compare the socialized with the non-socialized integration of distributed information systems. The findings of this research provide a useful framework for better implementing knowledge management practices especially in distributed working environments.

DOI : 10.3743/KOSIM.2008.25.1.075
With explosive growth in the area of the Internet and IT services, various types of e-documents are generated and circulated. An e-Document is a sort of electronic records which a organization performs works and goals. In this study, we propose a security algorithm for secure use and distribution of e-documents. Especially, the proposed method can be applied to generate digital signature which can guarantee authenticity, integrity, confidentiality of an e-document and authenticate authorized users. Also, we can get higher security level as using a smart card that provides highly storing capacity and security. We carried out an experiment to verify efficiency and security of the proposed method.
A Study on Implementing a National Academic Resources Management System in Korea
Noh, Young-Hee ; Park, Hong-Seok ; Lee, Soo-Ji ;
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 25, issue 1, 2008, Pages 99~127
DOI : 10.3743/KOSIM.2008.25.1.099
National competence is based on the quality of university education, which is determined by the competitiveness of academia, research and information, IMD reported that Singapore, #2 country in national competence index, topped in quality of university education. Meanwhile Korea's current national knowledge infrastructure project lacks comprehensive coordination at a governmental level and has been conducted in a rather sporadic manner, without any consideration on the overall analysis of knowledge information resources. Consequently, a disproportionate amount of attention was devoted to collecting general information resources, while neglecting rare, hard-to-collect sources with historic, academic, and/or cultural values. This study proposes to build an academic resource management system to fully supervise academic resources at least, among national knowledge information resources which is a national asset, and also to allocate budget and cultivate new information building projects based on overall analysis on academic resources. In other words, there is a need for a management system to implement efficient linkage, distribution and utilization of academic resources and, to that end, we need to build an academic resource management system at a national level, maximizing the benefits from the knowledge society that we live in.

Bibliographic Author Coupling Analysis: A New Methodological Approach for Identifying Research Trends
Lee, Jae-Yun ;
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 25, issue 1, 2008, Pages 173~190
DOI : 10.3743/KOSIM.2008.25.1.173
Author co-citation analysis(ACA) technique has been widely used for identifying research areas and trends in a discipline. But this technique has some limitations, mainly due to citation delay, on analyzing current trends and identifying active researchers. In this study, a new method, named as Bibliographic Author Coupling Analysis (BACA), is suggested for overcoming those limitations of author co-citation analysis. BACA is based on Kessler's bibliographic coupling approach and focuses not on documents but on authors. Simply stated, BACA technique assumes that those likewise citing authors have the same research interests. For the purpose of comparing with author co-citation analysis, two preceding studies with author co-citation analysis are reconsidered and re-examined using BACA. The comparing results can be regarded as promising the usefulness of BACA in analyzing current research trends and identifying active researchers.

DOI : 10.3743/KOSIM.2008.25.1.191
We would generally use subject terms such as subject indexing for searching and accessing documents. So then, there must be any relationship between document's full-text and its subject terms. This study is started in this question. Master's theses in field of science and technology are worked with because full-text is relatively formatted. This study is to study locations of subject term on Thesis, distribution patterns of subject terms on content of full-text; 'Contents', 'Introduction', 'Theory', 'Main subject', 'Conclusion' and 'References'. Thesis were averagely composed of 1226.3 terms. And Subject terms were averagely compose of
terms. As a result, 'Contents' and 'Introduction' have had the most frequency of subject.
A Study on the Performance Improvement of Rocchio Classifier with Term Weighting Methods
Kim, Pan-Jun ;
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 25, issue 1, 2008, Pages 211~233
DOI : 10.3743/KOSIM.2008.25.1.211
This study examines various weighting methods for improving the performance of automatic classification based on Rocchio algorithm on two collections(LISA, Reuters-21578). First, three factors for weighting are identified as document factor, document factor, category factor for each weighting schemes, the performance of each was investigated. Second, the performance of combined weighting methods between the single schemes were examined. As a result, for the single schemes based on each factor, category-factor-based schemes showed the best performance, document set-factor-based schemes the second, and document-factor-based schemes the worst. For the combined weighting schemes, the schemes(idf*cat) which combine document set factor with category factor show better performance than the combined schemes(tf*cat or ltf*cat) which combine document factor with category factor as well as the common schemes (tfidf or ltfidf) that combining document factor with document set factor. However, according to the results of comparing the single weighting schemes with combined weighting schemes in the view of the collections, while category-factor-based schemes(cat only) perform best on LISA, the combined schemes(idf*cat) which combine document set factor with category factor showed best performance on the Reuters-21578. Therefore for the practical application of the weighting methods, it needs careful consideration of the categories in a collection for automatic classification.
