A Study on Design of Total System in University Library by Computer
SaKong, Chul ; Choe, Seok-Du ; Han, Du-Wan ;
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 4, issue 2, 1987, Pages 3~30
This paper presents a library on-line system applicable to Korean university libraries and describes some features such as fundamental considerations concerning library automation, available software in Korea, and areas of library work where computer can be applied.
The National Policy of Information Management in the U.K.
Han, S.W. ;
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 4, issue 2, 1987, Pages 31~46
The United Kingdom has a well-developed and comprehensive information infrastructure which has grown up over many years, but in the strict sense it has no coherent body of policy relating to information collection, storage, provision and supply. However, each of the governmental, professional and other bodies which has any major involvement with information, has committees to run its affairs and develop its policies in relation to issues and problems in the field. In addition, a number of ad hoc committees and working parties, to discuss or deal with a current problem, or to monitor or advise on the conduct of a research or development project, show that there is a high degree of awareness. of what is happening in the field and that there are many opportunities for expressing any particular point of view. The need for good intelligence in business or industrial operations is now being more generally accepted, and in consequence the need for a director of intelligence is also seen. The director of information in an industrial setting is the information manager, who combines or has access to the skills of several disciplines, including library, data processing and communication skills as well as managerial. Recognition of the need for such persons has policy implications in terms of short-term training provision and long-term educational facilities for the emerging profession, as well as manpower planning implications.
Phase Relations in Colon Classification
Kim, T.S. ;
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 4, issue 2, 1987, Pages 47~61
Main advantages of an analytico-synthetic scheme are its flexibility and its ability to cope with new subjects as they arise. Accordingly the synthetic scheme can keep pace with changes in knowledge more easily than an enumerative scheme because new subjects often merely involve fresh combinations of basic unit parts already listed. The findings of the study are as follows: 1. Each part of the components of a complex subject is called phase in CC and we are able to obtain three levels of phase relations such as intra-facet phase relation, intra-array - phase relation and inter-subject phase relation. 2. Different digits are used in CC to represent different varieties of phase relation in each levels. 3. The mode of phase relation may be taken to indicate the strength of bond between the phase and may form a new main subject. 4. In the rules and grammar of the phase relation the extension of two-phase subject is possible up to any extent theoritically. 5. Phase relation in DDC was introduced in the 18th edition, but there was no provision for the kind and the level of phase relation. 6. Colon(:) of the UDC is used to represent phase relation but there was also no provision for the kind and the level of phase relation.
Informal Communication among Korean Biological Scientists
Cho, Myung-Hi ;
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 4, issue 2, 1987, Pages 62~83
This paper reports investigation of informal communication among Korean biological scientists. Scientists at the research front communicate informally each other and social organization based upon this communication relation is identified. Seventy-four percent of the scientists are joined together in a large communication network which includes all of the most productive and communicative scientists. Central scientists are the nodal points for dissemination of information as well as important information sources.
A Study on Setting the Library Standards for Institutions Educating the Gifted in Science and Technology
Kim, Chang-Keun ;
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 4, issue 2, 1987, Pages 84~138
Many countries make it their national policy to develop science and technology as the primary element in their overall national development, they concentrate on identifying gifted students in those areas and on educating them in special institutions. At this point the environmental factors in those educational institutions are highlighted. Of all these factors, a favorable and amenable environment of a library, the treasure - house of knowledge, is the most essential to the early achievement of the stated educational aims. Thus, this thesis describes the importance of educating gifted students, and then examines, compares, and analyzes the factores involved in improving the environments of institutional libraries for gifted students ; finally, this thesis proposes the minimum and optimum standards for library facilites, personnel, collections, and budgets.
A Design of Computerizing System for Record Management of ULJIN Nuclear Power Plant
Park, Yong-Boo ;
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 4, issue 2, 1987, Pages 139~151
The Computerizing Record Management System(RMS) has been developed for ULJIN Nuclear Power Plant in Korean on the basis of the Manual System. By means of review and analysis of processing flow & project requirements, system, logies such as Receiving system, Logging system, Distribution system, Filing system, Indexing & Retrieval system and Output system of statistic and various reports, have been established for computerizing. Structure of Masterfile has been designed so as to include Bibliographic data, Transmittal data, Distribution data, Area, data, RMS data for operation of Plant. The RMS data have been designed for construction and operation of the plant by adding index parameters for operation such as System code, KEPCO No., Component link code and Retention period on the point of receiving. The RMS has turned out an easy access to cross-reference between RMS and Material Control System.
The Development of KTALIS to Construct a Total System for Information Management
Lee, H.O. ; Kim, Yeong-Heon ; Kim, Jae-Il ; Heo, Mun-Haeng ; Kim, Won-Chan ; Choe, Sang-Gyu ;
Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, volume 4, issue 2, 1987, Pages 152~172
KTALIS has the objectives of sharing information through computer networks and constructing a total system for information management. It consists of three subsystems-books system, periodicals system, and indexed articles system. The books system is menu-driven on-line system that supports Korean-English mixed texts, and it has acquisition, cataloguing, retrieval, circulation and other functions. The development of the books system has completed, and it is in service now.
