A Study on the Tenn of 'Munhon-jongbo-hak' (文獻情報學), the Korean Equivalent of the English 'Library and Information Science'

In the first Dart of this paper, the writer describes the history of movements of changing the term "to-sogwan-hak"(圖書館學), the korean equivalent of the English "library science" which could be literally re-translated into English as "book building science" and has such a nuance in Korean, to "munhon-jongbo-hak"(文獻情報學), which literally means "documento-information science, the term the author advocated by 1971. In the second part, he analyses the term of "munhon-jongbo-hak" (文獻情報學) etymologically, structurely and semantically: and proposes to use it as the Korean equivalent of the English "library and information science" and of the Japanese "toshokan-joho-gaku"(圖書館情報學). He also suggests using it not as coordinate and separate sciences of both library science and information science but as integrated and united one.
Knowledge Representation in Knowledge-based Systems of Library and Information Science Field

Knowledge-based system is interpreted from the viewpoint of library and information science, and the concept of knowledge is defined in relation to information and data. Knowledge representation techniques are illustrated with examples from intelligent information retrieval systems and expert systems developed in library and information science field.

The production, processing and distribution of information is fast becoming a major economic activity for many nations of the world. The basic idea of this study is that knowledge and information are becoming the strategic resources and transforming agents in the information society. The purpose of this study is to fulfil two major objectives with regard to the analysis of the information sector in the information society. (1) This study investigates an empirical study of the information sector both the information work force, and information goods and services of the selected nations. (2) It advances theoretical explanations of the major factors of the growth of the information sector, and develops a new classification model of the information society.
Library and Information Science Education in Japan : Trends and Issues

As of 1988, Japan has 277 institutions that give Library and Information Science education, with most of them providing 19 credit Librarian Education Course prescribed by the Library Law. In this paper, the historical background and the current trends of Japan's Library and Information Science education, including those of these institutions will be studied for various angles. In addition, the curriculum of various types being provided by these institutions, as well as the teaching staff in charge of the education will be analyzed here. Finally, some of the present issues that face Japan's Library and Information Science education system will be pointed out, and its future tasks and prospect will be examined.

If reviews what components consist of information science curriculum and how the curriculum has been developed since it initialization in library science schools. A Study on the Comparison of the Library and Information Education System in Ost-and West Germany

The purpose of this paper is to compare the library and information education system in Ost-and West Germany. Toward this purpose, first, the historical beginning of library education is intraduced, secondly, library education system after the year of 1879 is descriebed along with theoretical foundation. Thirdly, seperated library education of the public librarian and academic librarian in Germany before and after the I. II World War was descirebed in context with historical and theoretical background and finnaly, in the modern information society. the library and information education of the seperated Ost-and West Germany is descriebed with their curricular.
An Evaluation Study on the Utilization of CD-ROM MEDLINE for Biomedical Information Retrieval and Searching

The present study is aimed at the comparative evaluation of several CD-ROM MEDLINE versions for biomedical information retrieval and searching. The CD-ROM MEDLINE has recently been introduced in Korea and is actively using for health and medical professionals as an effective delivery tool of biomedical information. And this evaluative study revealed some different advantages and disadvantages in searching information among several CD-ROM MEDLINE versions. The present study also provides some findings of CD-ROM user's information seeking behaviors.
