Angle Servo Method for Holographic Data Storage System using Angle Multiplexing

A control method for the angle servo of reference beam during reading recoded data images of a holographic data storage system is presented. The recording scheme with angle offset is adopted in order to verify the proposed angle servo. Using this recording scheme, the angle error signal is generated and we can implement the angle servo. Experiments have been performed on recording and reading data images to compensate Bragg angle mismatch.
Mirror-Switching Scheme for High-Speed Embedded Storage Systems

The flash memory has been remarked as the next generation media of portable and desktop computers` storage devices. Their features include non-volatility, low power consumption, and fast access time for read operations, which are sufficient to present flash memories as major data storage components for desktop and servers. The purpose of our study is to upgrade a traditional mirroring scheme based on SSD storages due to the relatively slow or freezing characteristics of write operations, as compared to fast read operations. For this work, we propose a new storage management scheme called Memory Mirror-Switching based on traditional mirroring scheme. Our Mirror-Switching scheme improves flash operation performance by switching write-workloads from flash memory to RAM and delaying write operations to avoid freezing. Our test results show that our scheme significantly reduces the write operation delay and storage freezing.
Improvement of Asymmetric Dual Lens Actuator with slim thickness

As a standard of optical disk drive (ODD) was determined to Blu-ray diks (BD), researches for securing slim drive thickness, high data transfer rate and high capacity have been progressed. The actuator for applying BD is also required to have high performances, such as compatibility, slim thickness and 3-axis motion. In this paper, an asymmetric dual lens actuator is proposed to satisfy abovementioned performances. To design the actuator in a limited space, stress analysis and design of experiment (DOE) are performed to reduce weight of moving part and increase driving force and flexible mode frequency. Consequently, the final model, which is satisfied with specifications, is secured.
Design of 2-axis compensation servo system for angle multiplexing Holographic Data Storage

Holographic Data Storage System, one of the next generation data storage devices, is a 2-dimensional page oriented memory system using volume holograms in writing and retrieving process. Recently photopolymer with disc type substrate was selected as a media for the Holographic Data Storage System. The disc tilt occurs when the media rotates and the external disturbance applies. The disc tilt causes the change of the angle between the reference beam and the media, the data cannot be retrieved with the right angle or other data page is retrieved. The tilt is generated in a 2-axis direction (tangential, radial). The tangential tilt direction is the same with the multiplexing plane, while the radial tilt direction is a perpendicular to the multiplexing plane. In this research we propose 2-axis tilt angle servo system. The tilt errors are measured by using external photo detector and the additional red laser. Then the tangential direction tilt is compensated by using the galvano mirror. Also the radial direction tilt is compensated by the rotating prism between the relay lens in the reference field. Finally we confirm the compensation results through the Signal to Noise Ratio(SNR) and Bit Error Rate(BER).
An Analysis of Damping Coefficients for Capillary Type Orifices on a Curved Stabilizer used in a High Speed Rotating Flexible Optical Disk System

In the last couple of years, the flexible optical disk(FOD) system that consists of a thin polycarbonate(PC) film of 95
thick, a rigid stabilizer, and a high speed spindle motor has been spot-lighted as the next-generation optical system for archival use of digital data. The air film between the rotating disk and stabilizer provides a means for damping out the lateral disk vibrations. However, its damping-capability drops significantly as the rotational speed of the disk exceeds a specific limit and, eventually, the disk vibration propagates inward causing the whole span of the disk exhibits large vibration amplitudes. Based on the numerical simulations as well as the experimental results, the present work aims to evaluate the damping coefficient of the air-film near the outer region of the disk where the capillary type orifices are applied to the edge of the curved stabilizer.
Effect of dynamic range consumption for microholographic data storage system

In microholographic data storage system (MDSS), compact recording is required to achieve high capacity. When the data is recorded, neighbor monomer is also affected by reaction at the focal point.[2,3] This unintended process caused more monomer consumption and degradation of total capacity. To avoid this extra consumption of dynamic range, it is required to define the effective dynamic range for MDSS. In this paper, we experimentally investigate the relation between dynamic range consumption and micro grating formation. Dynamic range consumption was monitored by real time read-out system. Micrograting was recorded with different consumption ratio and compared by diffraction efficiency of track direction. Finally, we define suitable dynamic range for MDSS.
Design and evaluation of laser module for light delivery in heat assisted magnetic recording

The micro laser module was designed and prepared to deliver the light to the HAMR head. It consists of laser diode, photo diode and actuator to realize stable light delivery even though the head is fluctuated during the disk rotation. The optical evaluation was carried out with the actual distance between the light source and HAMR head with a range of reflectivity and it was found that the incident angle could be controlled within
to maintain same intensity into the HAMR head. It was also confirmed that the designed micro laser module is thermally stable without any severe effect on the magnetic head.
Inter Pixel Interference Reduction using Interference Ratio Mask for Holographic Data Storage

Holographic Data Storage System (HDSS), one of the next generation data storage devices, is a 2-dimensional page oriented memory system using volume hologram. HDSS has many noise sources such as crosstalk, scattering and inter pixel interference, etc. The noise source is changing intensity of the light used for carrying the data signal in HDSS. The inter pixel interference results in decrease of Signal to Noise Ratio and increase of Bit Error Rate. In order to improve these problems, this paper proposes to compensate the inter pixel interference with simple interference mask.
