SERS Study of Phenol Red Using the Silver Mirror Substrates

It was recently reported that the SERS effect of the silver mirror substrate made by Tollen's method is much superior to that of other substrates. In this study, the experiments for comparison were done, where we checked the characteristics of silver mirror substrate made by different reductants, time interval and thermal treatments. We also surveyed correlations in substrates changes, the influence of SERS enhancement, and adsorbed orientation of phenol red.
Effect of Ultrasonic Pretreatment on Analysis of Potassium Ion in Human Urine Using 15-Crown-5-Anthracene-based Membrane

The effect of ultrasonic decomposition was introduced to develop a pretreatment method for the analysis of potassium ion in human urine by potentiometry. Simultaneous Determination of Anionic and Nonionic Surfactants Using Multivariate Calibration Method

A spectrophotometric method for the simultaneous determination of anionic and nonionic surfactant based on the application of multivariate calibration method such as principal component regression(PCR) and partial least squares(PLS) has been studied. The calibration models in PCR and PLS were obtained from the spectral data in the range of 400~700 nm for each standard of a calibration set of 26 standards, each containing different amounts of two surfactants. The relative standard error of prediction(RSEP
) was obtained to assess the model goodness in quantifying each analyte in a 5 validation samples which containing different amounts of two surfactants.

A Study on Comparison between the Propagation of Uncertainty by GUM and Monte-Carlo Simulation

The expanded uncertainties calculated by the application of GUM -approximation and Monte-Carlo simulation were compared about the model equation of one-point calibration which is widely used for the measurements and chemical analysis. For the comparisons, we assumed a set of artificial data at the various level of concentration and dispersion of t or normal distribution. Mistakes of more then 50 % was revealed at the values calculated by GUM-approximation in comparison with those of Monte-Carlo simulation because of the excess dispersion from t-distribution and non-linearity by division in the equation. In contrary, the mistake of calculation due to non-linearity of the equation was not observed in the level of detection limits with the equation of one-point calibration, because of the relatively large values of uncertainty in response.
Synthesis of New 2,4-Diimino-1,3-thiazoles and the Structure Determination

For the purpose of developing new agrochemical fungicides, compound 2 possessing 1,3-thiazole scaffold as well as urea moiety in the structure was designed through molecular modification of lead compound, 2-imino-1,3-thiazoline based on isosterism. The reaction of N-methylthiouea 5 and bromoacetonitrile in ethanol gave 2,4-diimino-1,3-thiazole 4 regioselectively, which was treated with phenyl isocyanates to give the corresponding 7 which is tautomer of 2. The structural assignment of 7 was confirmed by various spectra(
NMR, FT-IR, HRMS), and X-ray crystallographic data. Compound 8 which is a structural isomer of 7 was formed through thermodynamically unstable intermediate 2,4-diimino-1,3-thiazole 6.
Two Biophenolic Glycosides from Portulaca oleracea

From Portulaca oleracea which is widely distributed in Korea and has long been used as a folk medicine, two biophenolic glycosides, 3-hydroxy-1-(2-hydroxyethyl)phenyl-4-O-
-D-glucopyranoside (1) and 2-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl) ethyl-O-
-D-glucopyranoside (2) were isolated using column chromatography and reversed-phase HPLC.
NMR spectral assignment for these compounds was revised by the extensive 2-D NMR experiments such as NOESY, HMQC, and HMBC. These compounds showed a considerable antioxidant effect in DPPH assay system.
Partial Synthesis of Fibrostatins

Fibrosstatins, which were isolated from the culture broth of Streptomyces catanulae subsp. griseospora, are naphthoquinones which can work as alkylating agents. It is important to synthesize these quinone compounds for the study of their biological activities. In this paper, an efficient method, Hooker oxidation, to control the regiochemistry in the synthesis of fibrostatin B is reported.
Synthesis and Characterization of Comb-Type Grafted Polymer Hydrogels with Low Temperature Sensitivity

The comb-type grafted polymer hydrogels, which composed of N-isopropylacrylamide monomer and oligo(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-tert-butylacrylamide) [oligo(NIPAAm-co-t-BAM)], were synthesized by redox polymerization in 5~10% methanol aqueous solution using ammonium peroxodisulfate (APS) at 4 oC for 24h. The lower critical solution temperatures (LCSTs) of the comb-type grafted hydrogels were decreased with increase of t-BAM content in the grafted copolymer. We observed the effect of crosslinker and concentration of oligo(NIPAAm-co-t-BAM) on the shrinking/swelling ratio of hydrogels. Changes of shrinking/swelling ratio were decreased with increase of concentration of crosslinker. The increase of grafted oligo(NIPAAm-co-t-BAM) in the hydrogel shows an fast changes of shrinking/ swelling rate. The comb-type grafted hydrogels are expected to be valuable for the sensing materials of time-temperature labels(TTLs).
Analysis of Inquiry Activity of the 7th Grade Science Textbook Based on the 7th Curriculum

The present study examined the inquiry type, process, and context of activities presented in the matter field of the 7th grade science textbook based on the 7th curriculum. It was to investigate for educational suggestions in instruction and development of science textbook. Three units of ‘three states of matter', ‘motion of molecule', ‘the state change and energy' were analyzed. The result indicated that the types, processes and skills, and context of inquiry were not balanced, and learners should be educated with complementary inquiry activities. It is proposed that the inquiry activities presented in science textbooks be examined, and the framework to evaluate inquiry activities be reflected on the standard of science textbook authorization for development of the science textbook to accord with aims and objectives of curriculum.
The Effect of Grouping by Extraversion and Introversion in POE Learning Applied to Elementary School Science Class

In this study, the effects of grouping by extraversion and introversion in POE learning applied to elementary science class on students' achievement, the perception of learning environment and the attitude toward science instruction were investigated. Ninety-five 5th graders were assigned to the control group and the experimental groups, and taught about acid and base for 9 class hours. In the experimental groups, the homogeneous small group was composed of four introverts or four extroverts, and the heterogeneous small group was composed of two introverts and two extroverts. Two-way ANCOVA results revealed that the homogeneous group performed better than the control group in the application subtest of the achievement test. Significant difference in learning difficulty was found between the heterogeneous group and the control group. In the attitude toward science class, significant interaction effect was found between the instruction and the extraversion/introversion.
Modification of the Experimental Setup to reduce Misconceptions for the Voltaic Cell described in High School Chemistry Textbooks

Misconceptions of students for a Voltaic cell were studied and their contents described in the high school chemistry II textbooks were analyzed. This study shows that students have many misconceptions and a few of chemistry textbooks contain some false description in a Voltaic cell. In the most textbooks, the reasons why the measured cell voltage of a Voltaic cell is near 1.1 V at the initial stage and then it decreases with time are not explained clearly. The emf of a Voltaic cell at a standard state is 0.76 V but in some textbooks it is described as 1.1 V of a Daniel cell. Even after learning the Voltaic cell or performing the experiment of textbooks, most students still have some misconceptions. These may be due to at least two following facts: the first is that the measured cell voltage of a Voltaic cell at the initial stage is very similar to that of a Daniel cell. The second is that the most experiment of a Voltaic cell is not performed under the condition of a standard state. Therefore, we have suggested a model of the modified experimental setup of a Voltaic cell that could reduce misconceptions of students.
