The geometrical parameters and binding energies of the benzene ion-water complex [
(n=1-5)] have been investigated using ab initio (MP2) and density functional theory (DFT) with large basis sets. The harmonic vibrational frequencies and IR intensities are also determined to confirm that all the optimized geometries are true minima. Also zero-point vibrational energies have been considered to predict the binding energies. The predicted binding energy of 8.6 kcal/mol for

Inhibition effects of alanine(Ala), asparagine(Asn), aspartic acid(Asp), glutamine(Gln) and methionine(Met) on the corrosion of copper were investigated in aerated artificial sea water. Amino acid adsorption process in copper surface can be explained by Temkin logarithmic isotherm due to the interaction between the adsorbed molecules. The inhibition efficiency for the copper corrosion depended on the concentration of amino acids.

Complexes of thiocyanato(L)cobaloximes where L is urea, acetamide, semicrabazide and formamide were synthesized and characterized. The reaction of thiocyanato (L) cobaloximes (SCNCo
(L)) with benzyl (aquo) cobaloxime
was found to produce a series of thiocyanato bridged dicobaloximes of a general formula of
. Evidence for formulation as dicobaloximes containing thiocyanato ligand bridges was obtained from infrared data which show
increase in vCN upon formation of the dicobaloxime from the corresponding terminal thiocyanocobaloxime (SCNCo
(L)). Further characterization of these two series was done on the basis of (
)NMR, LCMS and elemental analysis. Anti-microbial activity of thiocyanato(L)cobaloximes and thiocyanato bridged dicobaloximes were screened against E. Coli. The DNA-binding behaviors of both monomers and dimers were investigated by spectroscopic methods and viscosity measurements. The results indicated that the dimer complexes bind with calf-thymus DNA in an intercalative mode via the terminal benzyl ring into the base pairs of DNA. It was observed that the monomer complexes did not interact with DNA. Fluorescence spectra for the interaction between thiocyanato bridged dicobaloximes and DNA were also studied.

Two polyacetylenes (1 and 2), four coumarins (3-6), and one sesquiterpene (7) were isolated from the halophyte Glehnia littoralis. Particularly, compound 6 and 7 were isolated for the first time from Glehnia littoralis. Their chemical structures have been determined by extensive 2-D NMR experiments such as

Antioxidizing Effects of Herbal Medicine Plants and Their Applications to the Materials of Skin Care Cosmetic Base

Mt. Jiri, where is located in southwestern area of Korea, can be a treasury of herbal medicine plants grown wild. More than 1200 species currently classified as herbs are grown or cultivated. Recently, the studies on the safflower which attracts the interests in the inhibition of skin aging in the modern people have been actively investigated, and this study aims to confirm that polyphenol compound, the main ingredient of safflower, can be a natural material to cause the delayed effect on the skin aging, inhibiting the generation of wrinkle in the 30 to 40s middle aged females. Primarily, this study is to confirm the anti-oxidizing effect by DPPH assay in vitro, and to evaluate the efficacy of inhibition or improvement on the wrinkle generation in the face skin by clinical trials, additionally. In addition, we are confident to contribute on the improvement of functional cosmetic industry, developing the sample product of anti-aging mask pack which has the main ingredient with the extract of safflower.
Synthesis and Properties about Color Stability of m-SiP-PPDFV with Difluoro Groups in Vinylene Units

New electroluminescent polymers with fluoro groups in vinylene units, poly(m-silylphenyl-p-phenylene-difluorovinylene) (m-SiP-PPDFV) have been synthesized by GILCH polymerization. These polymers have been used as the electroluminescent (EL) layers in single layer light-emitting diodes (LEDs) (ITO/PEDOT/polymer/Ca:Al). m-SiP-PPDFV shows PL around
= 452 nm and green EL around
= 497 nm. The current-voltage-luminance (I-V-L) characteristics of the polymers show turn-on voltages of 4.0 V approximately. Two fluoro groups were introduced on every vinylene units of m-SiP-PPV to give m-SiP-PPDFV in an attempt to increase the electron affinity of the parent polymer, and the devices show an increased color stability even with vinylene units. The color stability is attributed to the electron-withdrawing effect of the fluoro groups, which protect vinylene units from oxidation in PPV derivatives. We believe that fluoro groups can be introduced in vinylene units in order to attain excellent stability of PPV derivatives.

Two derivatives of star shaped compounds based on naphthylamine with symmetric trisubstituted benzene as core, methoxy and ethoxy as end substitutions are synthesized. The synthesized compounds are characterized by UV-visible, FT-IR and NMR spectrometric techniques. The electronic and thermal properties of the compounds are studied using cyclic voltametry (CV) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) respectively. The data's obtained have similarity with the arylamines that have been already used in optoelectronic devices. So these compounds are interesting materials for applications in such devices.

An efficient and simplified protocol for
catalyzed solvent-free synthesis of
-enaminone and 2-methylquinolin-4(1H)-one derivatives under microwave irradiation is described. A series of functionalized derivatives have been synthesized in shorter reaction times with moderate to good yields. The use of milder catalyst in non-conventional method offers significant advantages over conventional methods, such as higher selectivities, simplicity, solvent-free reaction and non-environmental polluting conditions.

A tricyclic ring system bearing new stereogenic center namely 2,3-dihydrobenzothieno[3,2-b]pyrrole 4,4-dioxide was synthesized by asymmetric photoisomerization of 2,3-dihydropyrrolo[1,2-b]benzisothiazole 5,5-dioxide by irradiation with 245 nm emission of the low-pressure mercury lamp. The chemical structure and the purity of the photoproduct were delineated preliminarily by IR, NMR, and MS and finally confirmed by single crystal X-ray crystallography.

Coupling of 5-amino-1,3-diaryl-pyrazoles 1a-c with diazonium salts of different aryl amines gave a series of novel 1,3-diaryl-5-amino-4-arylazopyrazoles 3a-l. Such compounds could be also obtained by reaction of 5-amino-1,3-diaryl-4-nitroso- 1H-pyrazoles 2a-c with different aryl amines in alkaline medium. Oxidation of azo derivatives 3a-l with cupric acetate, in dimethyl formamide and stream of air, gave 2,4,6-triaryl-2,4-dihydropyrazolo [4,3-d]-1,2,3-triazoles 4a-l. and the fluorescence properties of the cyclic triazoles were studied. Diazotization of 5-amino-1,3-diaryl-1H-pyrazoles 1a-c by sodium nitrite in ortho-phosphoric acid followed by coupling with some aryl amines gave o-aminoazo compounds 5a-f. Cyclisation of compounds 5a-f in pyridine and cupric acetate gave the corresponding triazoles 6a-f. The coupling of compounds 6a-f with different aryl diazonium salts gave compounds 7a-j. The synthesized dyes were applied to polyesters as disperse dyes and the fastness properties were evaluated.
Preparation of 2,3,4,5-Tetrafluorobenzoic Acid

2,3,4,5-Tetrafluorobenzoic acid, an important intermediates of fluoroquinolone antibiotics, was synthesized from tetrachloride phthalic anhydride through imidation, fluorination, hydrolysis and decarboxylation. The effects of phase transfer catalyst on imidation and fluorination reaction and the effects of surfactants on the hydrolysis reaction were studied, respectively. Experimental results showed that the imidation reaction time was greatly reduced in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst, hexadecyltrimethyl, resulting in imidation yield as high as 98.2%. The fluorination yield reached 81.3% when tetrabutylammonium bromide was chosen as a phase transfer catalyst. The hydrolysis reaction time was also decreased by adding hexadecyltrimethyl while increasing the yield to 88.6%. In the post-processing, the sublimation method was used to purify the product, and ideal effect was obtained. In the decarboxylation reaction, tetrafluoride phthalic acid was obtained by decarboxylation in the solvent of tri-n-butyl amine and decarboxylation yield reached 81.6%. Compared with the literature method, the overall reaction time of the improved method decreased from 53 h to 20.5 h and the total yield increased from 47.3% to 57.4%.
A Study on the Characteristics of IR/CR Rubber Blends by Surface Treatment with Chlorine

In this study, rubber vulcanization property, change in physical property, morphology and chemical characteristics of blended rubber depending on various IR/CR ratio were investigated for the purpose of the improvement of material property and durability. The effect of surface treatment by chlorine on the friction coefficient was also studied with various conditions of surface treatment. In terms of vulcanization property, as the amount of CR content increased, the speed of cure was decreased, while the density of crosslinking stayed constant. It means hardness and modulus were increased as the CR content increased. It is related to change in cure property and mechanical strength was improved by the effect of crystallization reaction. In the aging property, as the CR content increases, the changed amount of basic properties were decreased, which acts as a reducing factor in change of aged property by complementing weak point in mechanical property. It was found that the degree of property change for surface treated samples were reduced. According to the microscopic result, the degree of surface dispersion on rubber blends was increased by increasing CR content. Rubber surface showed uniform direction in pattern with increased smoothness and luster by treatment with chlorine. The degree of rubber reforming was measured by the remaining amount of chlorine and the friction coefficient was dependent on the amount of chlorine combined with rubber. In the initial stage of surface treatment, from 10 to 40 phr, the friction coefficient of specimen was rapidly reduced. However, as the concentration of chlorine solution increased, the change in friction coefficient was decreased.
Study on the Ophthalmic Lens Materials with High Refractive Index Containing Vinylanisole

This study used 3-vinylanisole and 4-vinylanisole with the cross-linker EGDMA (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate), HEMA (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate), MMA (methyl methacrylate), NVP (N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) and the initiator AIBN (azobisisobutyronitrile) for copolymerization. Measurement of the physical characteristics of the copolymerized material showed that the refractive index is 1.4496 - 1.4894, water content 22.93 - 35.50%, visible transmittance 88.8 - 90.8%. Also, measurements showed that the refractive index increased while the water content decreased as the ratio of 3-vinylanisole and 4-vinylanisole increased. And in cases of copolymer with 3-vinylanisole, 4-vinylanisole (added 15%) the results showed transmittance of 52.8 - 82.2%, 13.2 - 26.2% respectively for UV-A and UV-B showing that they have UV-blocking effects. Based on the results of this study, the produced copolymer can be estimated to be suitable for use as ophthalmic lens material for high refractive index and UV- blocking effects.
Preparation and Physical Properties of Hydrogle Lens Containing N,N-Dimethylacrylamide

Poly (N,N-dimethylacrylamide) is very useful in various fields due to its remarkable properties, such as water solubility and biocompatibility. This study used N,N-dimethylacrylamide with the cross-linker EGDMA (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate), HEMA (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate), MMA (methyl methacrylate), NVP (N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) and the initiator AIBN (azobisisobutyronitrile) for copolymerization. Measurement of the physical properties of the copolymerized polymer showed that the water content was 36 - 42%, refractive index was 1.433 - 1.426 and visible ray transmittance 90 - 91% while the oxygen permeability showed a distribution between 13.1 and
). The measurement showed that the increased amount of oxygen permeability of the copolymer measured using the polarographic method range between 11.0% and 80.5%. Based on the results of this study, the produced copolymer is suitable for use as a material to high oxygen permeability hydrogel lenses.
The Study on Magnetic Properties of Transition Metal Doped Semiconductor

This is the study of magnetic properties of transition metal doped diluted magnetic semiconductors(DMSs). The wurtzite structure samples were synthesized by the sol-gel method. The thermodynamic characteristics and magnetic properties of
single phase was investigated for different doping concentration (x = 0%, 1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, 5%, 10%, 15%). The property of diluted magnetic semiconductors has been comfirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electronic Microscope (SEM) and Vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The magnetic properties of pure
is found to be dominated by the ferromagnetic interaction between doped transition metal ions, where by the ferromagnetic coupling strength is simply increased with the concentration(>5%) of the doped transition metal.
The Effects of Problem-based Learning Applied to the Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory Classes

The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of PBL (Problem-based Learning) strategy applied to the "Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory" class. Especially, the changes in 'self-directed learning ability' and 'attitudes toward science' of undergraduate students were examined. In addition, perception on PBL problem and the PBL classes were investigated. The results of this study were as follows: First, after the course, 'self-directed learning ability' and 'attitude toward science' of students were significantly improved (p < .05). There were significant improvements in every sub-categories except 'self-confidence as a learner' for 'self directed learning ability' and every sub-categories except 'usefulness of science' for 'attitude toward science'. Second, the students expressed that PBL strategy provided opportunities to learn self-directively and responsibly, but the process of defining the problem was difficult. Finally on the survey toward PBL strategy, the students responded that PBL problems were authentic and helpful to learn problem solving ability. In conclusion, PBL laboratory course is effective for developing self-directed learning ability and positive attitude toward science.
Errors on Written Tests of Science in Middle School 7th Grade: Matters

The purpose of this study was to investigate errors on written tests of science, matters, in middle school 7th grade. Errors were defined something you have done which is considered to be incorrect or wrong, or which should not have been done. We found and classified errors, and then examined the frequency of types of errors on the written tests. A total of 167 test items from 10 middle schools were analyzed for this study. Errors on the written tests were classified into 5 types: insufficient information; unnecessary information; inaccurate information; information against curriculum; and unclear information. A total of 81 errors were counted out of 167 test items. The results of this study are expected to help teachers develop written test items to convey definite meanings by text and would be used as basic information for improving written test item standards.
A Case Study of Chemistry Major Pre-service Teacher's Understanding about the Properties of Dilute Solutions and Perception on Teacher Education Curriculum

We compared the understanding of 4 pre-service teachers of chemistry education major and 2 pre-service teachers of chemistry major related to conceptions of "properties of dilute solutions" chapter in high school Chemistry II textbooks. As results, few pre-service teachers understood fully the concepts of high school Chemistry II textbooks. Some pre-service teachers had misconceptions related to properties of dilute solutions. We found that few differences existed between the pre-service teachers' understanding regardless of whether they took a major in chemistry education of a education college or a major in chemistry of noneducation college. Most of the pre-service teachers who attended this research recognized the lack of practical knowledge in their pre-service teacher curriculum.
Pre-service Chemistry Teachers' Misconceptions about Motions of Molecular Gases: Translational, Vibrational and Rotational Motion

In this study, we conducted a textbook analysis and a conceptual test in order to investigate misconceptions of preservice chemistry teachers in understanding motions of molecular gases. As a result, we found out that many of the general chemistry textbooks not only introduce motions of molecular gases by explaining basic conceptions and using simple models, but also omit the explanation on center of mass when dealing with rotational motion. The physical chemistry textbooks, however, mainly approach motions of molecular gases in terms of spectroscopy and use various models to explain more intensified concepts, referring the center of mass in rotational motions. Meanwhile, pre-service chemistry teachers' confidence and understanding in the motions of molecular gases were very low and pre-service teachers also had many misconceptions about them. We believe this is because they had a tendency to depend largely on their intuition based on the pre-conceptions and the visual materials in the textbooks.
A Study of High School Students' Conceptions for Density

The primary purpose of this study was to investigate high school students' conceptual understanding of density for solids and liquids in pure and mixed substances who had preceded formal school science instruction on density and related topics. A concept assessment on density was developed and administered by demonstrative experiments accompanied by a written assessment test method to 120 general high school students in a metropolitan city. The scientific conceptions and alternative conceptions from students' responses were identified and the percentages of them were calculated. Then, their alternative conceptions and implicit theories on density were analyzed. About half of the students couldn't differentiate weight-volume-density and regarded density as an innate property of matter. Furthermore, the greater the number of variables involved in an experimental condition of the question, the more complicated and undifferentiated students' density concepts were. Students employed more improper variables such as particle size, intermolecular distance, surface tension, polarity of the solvent, etc. in explaining counter-intuitive observations. The implications for school science instruction were discussed.
Item Analysis of Japanese NCTUA for the Quality Improvement of Chemistry Items of CSAT

It has already been 17 years since the first implementation of the Korean College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT). Having been administered so many CSAT tests including practice tests, criticisms have been made against CAST tests being stuck to the same pattern and focusing mainly on knowledge-based items. To address this issue, we analyzed the chemistry items of the Japanese National Center Test for University Admissions (NCTUA) administered in January of 2009 with regard to content factors, behavioral domains, item types, and noted any peculiarities in comparison to CSAT. Also, we estimated the predicted percentage of correct answers from the perspectives of Korean candidates to arrive at implications for chemistry items of CSAT.
