Hand-effect compensation circuit design using the low-voltage MEMS switch in the handset

In this paper, the external matching circuits were designed in order to compensate the efficiency which decreases by human body effect in the internal antenna phone. Comparing the two types of matching circuit, we selected the structure to minimize the switch stress. RF MEMS switch using low voltage was compared with FET switch and measured the performance in the handset. Here, the detection circuit which can couple th reflection power from antenna was added in the handset and we set up the demonstration system that can compensate the loss of hand effect automatically. In this system, when hand effect occurred, the radiation power increased 2.5dB by operation the matching circuit.
A Deterministic Access Protocol in WiMedia Wireless Personal Area Networks

WiMedia UWB technology is a fully distributed data communication technology developed for the application demanding a high data transmission rate in the wireless PAN area. In general, devices can send data either by reserving time slots or by using prioritized CSMA/CA. If the PCA protocol of prioritized CSMA/CA is used, they are suffered congestion as the number of devices increases. In this paper, we propose a Deterministic Access Protocol(DAP) in WiMedia WPANs. A DAP is a method to transmit data in the non-reserved DRP period without competition as each device informs the beacon order information in the beacon period and the queue information. In addition, the problem that the devices with a lower beacon slot number have more transmission opportunities is addressed by introducing the reference point. Simulation results are given to demonstrate that a DAP can improve the throughput and reduce the packet loss rate.
Deciphering FEATURE for Novel Protein Data Analysis and Functional Annotation

FEATURE is a computational method to recognize functional and structural sites for automatic protein function prediction. By profiling physicochemical properties around residues, FEATURE can characterize and predict functional and structural sites in 3D protein structures in a high-throughput manner. Despite its effectiveness, it has been challenging to apply FEATURE to novel protein data due to limited customization support. To address this problem, we thoroughly analyze the internal modules of FEATURE and propose a methodology to customize FEATURE so that it can be used for new protein data for automatic functional annotations.
FEA-Based Optimal Design of Permanent Magnet DC Motor Using Internet Distributed Computing

The computation time of FEA(finite element analysis) for one model may range from a few seconds up to several hours according to the complexity of the simulated model. If these FEA is used to calculate the objective and the constraint functions during the optimal solution search, it causes very excessive execution time. To resolve this problem, the distributed computing technique using internet web service is proposed in this paper. And the dynamic load balancing mechanisms are established to advance the performance of distributed computing. To verify its validity, this method is applied to a traditional mathematical optimization problem. And the proposed FEA-based optimization using internet distributed computing is applied to the optimal design of the permanent magnet dc motor(PMDCM) for automotive application.
A Smooth Position Control of Ultrasonic Motor Using Fuzzy Logic

Ultrasonic motor (USM) is a new type motor which is driven by the ultrasonic vibration of piezoelectric elements. It possess many useful features that electromagnetic motors do not have, such as low speed and high torque. However, ultrasonic motor has heavy nonlinear speed characteristics and is sensitive to the change of drive conditions. In order to solve these problems, we present a smooth position control scheme for ultrasonic motor using fuzzy logic control with human expertise and without the need of any precise mathematical model. A "smooth operation" consideration is included when constructing the fuzzy rule base in order to achieve a most smooth response. An experimental position control system is constructed to show the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.
Design and Verification using Energy Consumption Model of Low Power Sensor Network for Monitoring System for Elderly Living Alone

Wireless sensor networks consist of small, autonomous devices with wireless networking capabilities. In order to further increase the applicability in real world applications, minimizing energy consumption is one of the most critical issues. Therefore, accurate energy model is required for the evaluation of wireless sensor networks. In this paper we analyze the power consumption for wireless sensor networks. To develop the power consumption model, we have measured the power characteristics of commercial Kmote node based on TelosB platforms running TinyOS. Based on our model, the estimated lifetime of a battery powered sensor node can use about 6.9 months for application of human detection using PIR sensors. This result indicates that sensor nodes can be used in a monitoring system for elderly living alone.
Design Characteristics on Electric Drivetrain for Electric Vehicle Based on Driving Performance

Design consideration on electric drivetrain(E-D/T), usually referred as electric motor for driving, its compatible reduction gear, and inverter, are performed for developing electric vehicle(EV) with efficient driving performance. Universal mode of driving cycle has been used to make up the actual vehicle performance, and its results are incorporated to the design of E-D/T.
Numerical Heat Transfer Analysis applying Coupled Electromagnetic Characteristics and Convection Boundary Condition

The heat transfer analysis applying finite element method has been carried out. Particularly, the convection boundary condition associated with the mixed boundary condition is numerically formulated by the Galerkin method analogous to the magnetic field problem. Also, the coupled electromagnet-thermal field analysis by the proposed heat transfer coefficient computation algorithm is executed to enhance the accuracy of solutions. Finally, the validity of the proposed results is verified by comparison with the measured ones.
A Study on the Self-voice Suppression Algorithm in a ZigBee CROS Hearing Aid

In this study, we developed a wireless CROS(contralateral routing of signal) hearing aid for unilateral impaired people. CROS hearing aid takes sound from an ear with poorer hearing and transmit to another ear with better hearing. Generally, the self-voice delivered through the receiver of CROS hearing aid can be very loud. It is hard to perceive target speech because of loud self-voice. To compensate it, a self-voice suppression algorithm has been developed. we performed SDT(speech discrimination test) for evaluation of the self-voice suppression algorithm. One-syllable words was used as test speech and recorded with self-voice at a 1m distance. As the results, SDT score was improved about 11% when the self-voice suppression algorithm was processed. It is verified that the self-voice suppression algorithm helps speech perception at a time to communicate with others.
A Study on Rectangular-Ring Patch Active Antenna with Dual Polarization Diversity

This paper describes a compact microstrip active antenna with dual polarization. The antenna, receiving both a left-hand circularly polarized wave and a right-hand circularly polarized wave, has a function of polarization diversity. A square-shaped empty room is located on the inside of the microstrip radiator so that the size has been reduced. And slots are added around feeding point to improve input matching. Also, amplifier and switching circuitry are placed at the empty room to increase antenna gain and to select one of the circular polarizations, respectively. The proposed antenna has been applied to GPS(global positioning system). The measurement results show that it has 10dB-impedance bandwidth, 3dB axial bandwidth of about 50MHz, 3dB beamwidth of 90degree, and gain of 13dBi, respectively, for RHCP. Also, it has 3dB axial bandwidth of about 50MHz, 3dB beamwidth of 84 degree, and gain of 12dBi, respectively, for LHCP.
SD(Short Data) Performance Measurement in D-TRS Wireless Network Environment

TETRA is the standard of Digital Trunked Radio System developed by the ETSI(European Telecommunications Standards Institute). It is adopted as Electric Power IT Wireless Backbone Network in Korea. To use TETRA wireless network, TETRA modem is very necessary. In this paper, the performance measurements of modem and its results are analyzed according to traffics in TETRA network. In this paper, SDS type-4 transmission method is used in the transmission standards suggested by PEI(Peripheral Equipment Interface) of ETSI. Performance measurements are done by varying the data size and transmission interval. The data size is increased by 10 bytes from 10-byte to 140-byte, and it is measured 1,000 times for each transmission interval of 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 seconds. MU-1000MD of Unimo is used for TETRA modem, and SwMI(Switching and Management Infrastructure) of Teltronic is used for switching system in this paper.
Building IEC 61850 SCADA system based on TETRA

TETRA(TErrestrial Trunked RAdio) is the wireless communication system generally adopted to public network and backbone network, as the technology of Trunked Radio System specified by ETSI(European Telecommunications Standards Institute) and currently adopted to the Electric Power IT Backbone Network in Korea. IEC 61850 is the protocol proposed for SAS(Substation Automation System) of SCADA(Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) system. In this paper, IEC 61850 Server and Client simulator are used based on Linux operating system. The multi-functional gateway, which transforms the communication based on TCP/IP between IEC 61850 Server Simulator and Client Simulator to the one based on TETRA Packet Data Service, is developed such that IEC 61850 SCADA system is constructed based on TETRA.
DLMS SCADA System based on TETRA

DLMS(Device Language Message Specification) is used in order to meter an electric measuring instrument value. In this paper, DLMS Server and Client simulator are used based on Window operating system. The multi-functional gateway, which transforms the communications based on RS-232C between DLMS Server Simulator and Client Simulator to the one based on TETRA PEI(Peripheral Equipment Interface), is developed such that DLMS SCADA(Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) system is constructed based on TETRA.
