Investigation on the Relationship between Land Use and Water Quality with Spatial Dimension, Reservoir Type and Shape Complexity

Land use types within a watershed closely are related with the water quality characteristics of receiving water bodies. Despite of a numerous studies suggesting a strong relationship between water quality and land use, there have been increasing concerns about the geographical variation and a lack of spatial integration in that relationship, which are essential to implementing these findings into land use planning and management. In the meantime, edges mediate the material flux between adjacent systems. This mediating effect of edges is strongly related to the complexity of their shapes. Land use activities within a watershed have a direct impact on the water quality of adjacent aquatic systems, and hydrological processes carry residuals from watershed into adjacent aquatic ecosystems through the edges. Therefore, the geometry of reservoirs theoretically affects the relationship between land uses in the watershed and the quality of receiving bodies of water. In this light, this study integrates the geo-spatial dimensions of land uses in the watershed using GIS and landscape indices in order to explore the relationship between land uses and water quality. Water quality characteristics, land uses and geometry of 133 randomly sampled reservoirs were correlated, based on buffer zones and types of reservoirs. The findings showed that land uses, particularly urban land uses, significantly affect water quality characteristics including BOD, COD, TN and TP, and geometry of reservoirs reduces the concentration of pollutant and nutrients in reservoirs. One of results indicates that the relationship between land use and water quality and effects of spatial dimension may vary with types of reservoirs and pollutants. These results suggest that lakeshore areas are important, particularly for TN reduction and call for a caution to land use activities nearby shoreline areas for sustaining better water quality.
Selection of the Priority Order for Additional Green Spaces for Urban Park and Green Network

The purpose of this paper was to classify areas demanding to be transformed to green spaces and evaluate their grades for urban park and green networks. The results of this study are summarized below; 1. The results of the classified green spaces in the research areas fall into three types including children parks, neighborhood parks, and public green spaces. The three types of green spaces were analysed with recreational indexes. The zones disturbing the green-networks were sorted out. These zones should be changed into a supplementary green spaces for improving the recreational functions in the city. 2. For urban park and green networks, distances between the parks and size of the parks were adopted as indices. Based on the index of distances between the parks, disturbing zones were evaluated with 3 grades. The first grade includes primary industrial complexes and housing complexes. The second grade was observed mostly in industrial complex areas. The third grade includes housing complexes. Based on the indexes of size of parks, disturbing zones were evaluated with 2 grades. In the case of grade I, it appeared in housing complex. In the case of grade II, it appeared in industrial complex. 3. Then, we prioritized the disturbing zones with severity in order to make supplementary green spaces. Through the process, the zones of the grade I for two each recreational index were evaluated to two grades. The analysis results of evaluated zones were that grade II appeared over industrial and housing complexes widely. Grade I appeared over housing complexes. 4. It is necessary that the grade of disturbing zones should be considered as an order to make green spaces to supplement a green-network. For this, we formed a basic frame of a green-networks in Dalsu-Gu and placed the disturbing zones on the basic frame of a green-network. Consequently, The results were that the green-networks in Dalsu-Gu was composed on four green-network axes and its shape mirrored a cruciform (+) of northwest

Ecological Planning Technique for Considering Biotope Evaluation of Housing Development Districts

Since 1990, urban areas have been expanded rapidly due to the concentration of the population and several development projects including large scale apartment complexes and residential developments. Due to these development projects, the quality and functions of ecosystems have been continuously degraded, regardless of public agencies' efforts introducing development index, guideline, and amendment of law for sustaining the quality of ecosystems. Substantial guideline and content cannot expect the sustainable maintenance of nation's natural resources. Recent improve this situation, ecological planning was introduced, but research data of environments and objective systems were not enough showing the limits. The purposes of this study were to reduce the urban sprawl caused by residential development plans for environment-friendly residential developments, to establish applicable ecological planning, and to suggest the land use plans that reduce adverse effects of developments to nature ecosystem.
Changes in Plant Species on a Grass Roof over Time

Unlike conventional roof landscaping, where various kinds of plants and structures are employed, a grass roof is a roof on which herbaceous plants are grown in planting medium and which is not accessed or maintained, mainly because it doesn't have sufficient load capacity to support a regular roof garden. They are mostly built on existing roofs, whether flat slab or gabled. Planting on roofs has numerous advantages, such as creating a biotope, purifying urban air, adding moisture to the atmosphere, storing rain water, preventing flash floods, reducing energy use for heating and air conditioning, enhancing the urban landscape and providing relaxation to the city dwellers, not to mention the alleviation of global warming by absorbing
. In addition to the general merits of roof planting, the grass roof has its own unique qualities. Only herbaceous species are planted on the roof, resulting in light weight which allows roofs of existing buildings to be planted without structural reinforcement. The species chosen are mostly short, tough perennials that don't need to be maintained. These conditions provide an ideal situation where massive planting can be done in urban areas where roofs are often the only and definitely the largest space available to be planted. If roofs are planted on a massive scale they can play a significant role in alleviating global warming, heat island effects and energy shortages. Despite the advantages of grass roofs, there are some problems. The most significant problem is the invasion of neighboring plants. They may be brought in with the planting medium, by birds or by wind. These plants have little aesthetic value comparing to the chosen species and are usually taller. Eventually they dominate and prevail over the original species. The intended planting design disappears and the roof comes to look wild. Since the primary value of a grass roof is ecological, a change in attitude towards what constitutes beauty on the roofscape is necessary. Instead of keeping the roof neat through constant maintenance, people must learn that the wild grass with bird's nests on their roof is more beautiful as it is.
Research on the Characteristics of Garden Design and Dwellers' Understanding of Garden Maintenance in Single Detached Urban Dwellings

There is little research on the exterior spaces or gardens of single detached urban dwellings in Korea because apartments are the general housing type of most inhabitants. However there is an increasing demand for idyllic houses in the urban fringe and for environmentally friendly dwellings or healthy houses that is represented in urban residents gardening activities. The purpose of this research is to analyze residents' preferences and problems in gardening and management of single detached urban dwellings, and to evaluate the possibility of gardens as biotopes. It also addresses the issue of providing public amenities in the urban landscape. One hundred thirty-six dwellings were selected in residential areas of the city of Gwangju. The layout and plant composition, residents' evaluation and understanding of their own gardens, and maintenance and management were investigated. The results indicated that residents associate gardening with mental health and recognized a lack of space as one environmental restriction. Watering was seen as a primary difficulty for maintaining gardens. This research suggests that providing space for gardening could be a tool for participatory community making. When considering the important aspects of gardening, residents responded that gardens offer naturalness, scenic beauty, and practicality and also felt that gardens provide a buffer from environmental pollution and relief from mental duress. Results from the factor analysis using 15 semantic differential variables showed that 'spatial openness', 'natural variety' and 'familiarity' were representative factors. Although a garden is mainly considered as a space for the appreciation of nature with plant material, our results suggest that meaning and environmental symbolism are important elements.
Analysis of the Leisure Choice Attributes at Rural Area of Urban People

This study intends to analyze urban peoples' leisure choice attributes of rural areas from a rural demand perspective. For this purpose, this study investigates regional attributes considered in decision making processes for rural tourism destinations of urban residents using a conjoint model as a stated preference model. Based on literature reviews, two questionnaire surveys were conducted. The first questionnaire survey was performed in 4 cities including Seoul, Daejeon, Suwon and Chuncheon with 408 urban residents. The Second questionnaire survey was performed in 5 cities including Seoul, Chuncheon, Daejeon, Jeonju and Busan with about 1,060 urban residents. The study results suggest that the most important attribute in selecting rural ares for tourism are activity programs and convenience of facility, according to part-worth and vector model. The fitness level of model is 0.986, which is very significant. Among the 5 attribute's levels, the rural residents' kindness, the traditional and the ecological programs and the facilities about sign and lodging are more critical factors than other levels. Utilities of each levels decreases as cost and arrival time increases. Regarding the result of market segmentations, respondents having intention to visit can be divided into 4 group; (1) facility or program oriented type, (2) resident's kindness oriented type, (3) arrival time oriented type, and (4) negatively participant type. The results of leisure choice attributes can provide insightful information for regional planning strategies, such as selection of the type of market segments and the key factor of facility and space planning.
Model Study on the Level of Satisfaction for Recreation Forest Accommodations

Research into the use of recreation forest accommodations, the main facilities in these forests, and user satisfaction with them has been carried out for recreation forests in the suburbs of Daegusi and Gyongsangbukdo. This study aimed at providing background material to support the increasing demand to improve the facilities of recreation forests and to educate recreation forest staff about how to provide better service. User satisfaction with recreation forests as determined through regression analysis was affected by the following factors in this order: indoor recreation, the indoor space, outdoor recreation, time satisfaction factor, and activity opportunities. The level of satisfaction is affected by the force of factors above. The order of effective offerings of accommodations is presented according to the results.
View-oriented and Green Marketing Characteristics of Apartment Advertisements on Newspapers

This study analyzed the key words in Korea's leading apartment brands and newspaper advertisements to examine especially their view-oriented advertising characteristics and green marketing properties. Thus, it is more well-being marketing rather than green marketing. To pursue true green marketing despite the limits of newspaper advertisements, it is necessary to present products and pricing strategies that represent sustainable.
A Study on Landscape Restoration of the Namhan-Sansung Village

This study is a base research for the restoration of village landscape of the Namhan-Sansung. The Namhan-Sansung has been recognized as a top destination for dining places. However, there have been increasing concerns about the village landscape and its rich historic and cultural heritages transformed into dining places. The village landscape of Namhan-Sansung should be reconstructed as a setting for education and loaming of Korean history and culture forgotten for a long time. The landscape also should be a space where resolute resistance and spirit of Korean people and a futuristic village space where environment friendly community environment harmonizes with daily lives. Restoration efforts of village landscape of the Namhan-Sansung can get to start from exploring the prototype of the village. In order to restore the prototype, it is important to review potential elements and setbacks. Based on the prototype of the Namhan-Sansung village, transitions of village landscape were reviewed and directions of restoration were proposed. Also, an improvement plan was proposed after reviewing problems in system and planning.
Reuse Methodology for Abandoned Mines as Industrial Heritage

Industrial heritage artifacts may include the industrial products, technologies and infrastructures that have contributed to modernization beginning with the Industrial Revolution. The history of our industrial heritage spans 50 to 150 years and can be characterized by taking into account the site and the technology. This paper analyzes 13 precedents in Japan, Canada, and the United States in terms of these concerns, with focus on the reuse of abandoned mines as industrial heritage. Field surveys and interviews about each abandoned mine were used to obtain historical records and material. The results describe progress in three phases (1) recognizing phase, (2) organizing phase, and (3) maintenance management phase. A proper methodology for reuse is necessary to ensure the authenticity of the abandoned mine, particularly in the face of poor tourism-oriented approaches. As a result of analyzing the 13 cases, we determined that the following principles should be considered during the reuse process. Firstly, reuse of abandoned mines should not be compulsory but should be a spontaneous process and especially, should be carried out by inhabitants. Secondly, education and real experiences in the abandoned mine should be used to ive visitors a feeling of authenticity. Thirdly, creative remodeling methods can be used to enhance the abandoned mine's facilities and the site. Finally, historic and new functions should be the focus of the revitalization. Because this paper mainly focused on 13 precedents, there are likely more diverse cases. However, the conclusions of this report have practical value for reuse of abandoned mines and can be used in establishing methods for reusing Korean abandoned mines as industrial heritage.
