A Study on the Minimum Distance between Landscape Trees and Apartment Buildings

The purpose of this study is to suggest the minimum distance needed between landscape trees and apartment buildings. in order for the trees to grow soundly and maintain constant growth. Therefore, this study investigated and analyzed the present conditions of the green-spaces contiguous to apartment buildings and the trees inside the apartment complex. The following general problems were identified : (1) the tree growth conditions, (2) the planting intervals, and (3) the planting methods in the apartment complexes. The method of this study was to survey areas, measure the trees and analyze the results. Ten apartment complexes located in Seoul were randomly selected for this study. To analyze the greens contiguous to the building of each apartment complex, the greens were divided into three types, including the front greens, the side greens, and the rear greens. The study surveyed the width of all contiguous greens and the distance from trees to my given building. Four representative sites were specifically investigated to measure the crown widths, heights, and diameters of the trees. These investigations were carried out over 3 months from August to December 2006. According to the results of the study, it was found that the greens are narrower in width and the more closer to a building. The study identified a correlation between the tree and the passage of time after the completion of construction of an apartment complex, showing that the malformation of the trees worsened as time passed. As a result of measuring the right crown and left crown width with the tree trunk as the center, a broad difference was found between coniform trees and trees that tend to branch out more. For example, the ratio of the width of the Acer palmatum is 1:6. However, the ratio of the Metasequoia glyptostroboide is 1:1.7. Based on the overall analysis, it was concluded that the maintained minimum width must be greater than one meter over the green space according to the 'Landscape Standard 2000'. However, that is only applicable to cases such as apartment buildings that present no obstacles. In conclusion having greens placed within one meter of width to a building is not an appropriate environment for the healthy growth of trees. To create sound green spaces, sustainable, long-term growth rate and size should be considered. It is necessary to prepare new standards for the computation of planting trees and the measurement of square landscapes. Wall greenery and shrubberies could be an alternative in the case of a narrow-width green space.
Planning for the Yeonin Mountain Provincial Park

This plan was submitted as part of an invited competition for the provincial park planning of Yeonin Mountain, which was held by the Gyeonggi Innovation Corporation in November, 2006. The proposed site is located at Seungan-ri, Gapyung-eup, Gapyung-gun, Gyunggi-do and covers about
. The main goal of this project is to "Suggest a New Park Paradigm" by shedding old ways of thinking about parks through an integrated development concept. Planning was approached as follows: First, providing an unique theme to the support facilities area of Yeonin Mountain Piovincial Park. To achieve this theme, the Seungan support facilities area was designated to be home to a Seven Colored Theme Garden, currently named the Native Wild-flower Garden, while the Baekdun facilities area is to be centered on a Self-loaming Forest Camp, which will give the chance of a hands-on wildlife experience. With these themes, which create recreational goals that will encourage not only tourism but education as well, the foundation was laid for a multi-purpose park paradigm. Second, Developing a Core Facility Zone. To accomplish the development of a core facility zone, park buildings will be arranged in accordance with an integrated building lay-out for easy access and use, and the facilities specified by design for the Seven Colored Theme Garden are provided for the newly prepared site. This will allow focus on the user's viewpoint instead of the view of the planner or of ease of maintenance.
The Meeting Plaza Design around "Myeonmok" Subway Station, Seoul

This paper presents a landscape design for the meeting plaza around the "Myeonmok" subway station. The site is located at 120-1 Myeonmok 1-dong, Jnngrang-gu, Seoul, and its area is approximately
. The goal of the design was to make an environmentally friendly meeting and rest place which was related to the subway station. To achieve this goal, concepts of history, tradition, sense of place, community, environmental friendliness, and function were developed. For history, stone sculpture and art tiles symbolizing the paleolithic area were introduced because the site is located near an archaeological site of paleolithic min. For tradition, considering that the site is a 'sailing ship' form in terms of Pungsu theory, a sculpture symbolizing a sailing ship and paving patterns symbolizing waves were introduced. For asense of place, a grass hill, a waterfall and a pond symbolizing an old meadow for horse pasture was introduced. In addition, a multi-purpose round plaza as a meeting place for local community and subway users was proposed. A zelkova grove symbolizing a village forest was proposed for a restand relaxation area. All areas were designed to be environmentally friendly and barrier-free. Concepts for a defensible space wereadapted for safety because the site was a crime-prone area.
Analysis of Factors in Visual Preference for River Scenery to estimate the Optimal Ratio of Water Surface Width.River Width - With a Focus on the Youngsan and Sumjin Rivers -

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the visual preference factors for river scenery, which can vary according to changes in water levels, to estimate the optimal ratio of water surface/river width. Five locations on the Youngsan and Sumjin Rivers were selected as representative samples and field survey data such as channel geometry with water levels were prepared to develop the slide of river scenery, To estimate the level of satisfaction in river scenery, slides of 4 different water levels at each of the representative locations were developed through questionnaire. To analyse the correlation between the visual preference for river scenery and preference factors, a multi regression analysis method was adopted in this study. According to the results of the multi regression analysis, Factor B(Aesthetic factors) have the greatest affect on visual preferences and Factor A(A Feeling of Open space and Physical factors) affect significantly to visual preferences for river scenery. The results of analysis shows that the most preferred W/B ratio varies from 0.5 to 0.7 and this result indicates that many people prefer high levels river flow to maintain a natural and harmonious view of rivers. The results of this study will contribute to the field of river landscape design and river restoration projects in order to maximize the human being's satisfaction as a part of nature.
Study of Changes in Names of Outdoor Space and the Characteristics of Their Image in Apartment Complexes after the IMF Restructuring

This study intended to provide basic data for the future naming of outdoor areas in apartment complexes by conducting research into the causes, lengths of time, trends, and characteristics of the changes of outdoor space names of apartment complexes and by analyzing current images of outdoor space names. In order to explore the causes and intervals of changes of outdoor spaces in apartment complexes, related literature was surveyed, with on-site inspections being made to examine outdoor space names by time intervals. At the site selected for this study, a case study was conducted to determine the outdoor space names and to understand the trends in the changes of these name in the apartment complexes. Moreover, a questionnaire survey incorporating selected adjectives was administered to investigate the perceived images of outdoor space names and finished construction spaces. The results are as follows: 1. Causes driving changes in apartment outdoor space names included changes in apartment complex planning concepts, changes in the values and demands of apartment buyers, social values, and changes of brand. Intervals of changes were divided into two with the 1997 IMF financial restructuring of the Korean economy as the division. 2. In regards to trends in changes of apartment outdoor space names and their characteristics, various features applied to spaces have caused many changes, which resulted in the phrase
, expressions suggesting various images, and Korean names. 3. The results of the analysis of apartment outdoor space names and finished construction images revealed that there was a difference in all the spaces. This is thought to be mainly due to such issues as paved min, the use of ready-made goods, and figurative expressions. The results of the study above indicate that changes in outdoor space names of apartment complexes have been made simply as part of marketing strategies, with no consideration of the residents. Apartments, an important means of housing in Korea, account for more than 50% of Korea's total housing, and the naming of outdoor space serves as an essential element for residents. Therefore, outdoor spaces of apartment complexes should be named in consideration of the final appearance after construction is completed, with effort by the industry being required.
A Study of the Landscape Preference for 'Oreu'm by Analyses of Features & Visual Elements

The purpose of this study was not only to clearly examine the features of the scenery and visual elements of Oreum (parasitic cones) but also to investigate primary factors in landscape preferences for these cones. This study further attempted to gain basic information for examining the preservation of Oreum in regards to the influence of scenery on the general public. A Multiple Regression Analysis was used for this study for which the independent variable was the area ratio of the fore-, mid-, and background of the view under the feature element and the structure of the scenery at the Oreum. The dependent variables were the preference value, the number of summits, and the highest altitude of the Oreum. All but the highest inclination were positive variables. The area ratio of the Oreum was found to be the most important variable. The area of sky and the area of the distant scenery were shown to be positive explanation variables, while the area to the fore of the view and the area to the middle of the view were shown as negative explanation variable. In the preference for Oreum scenery, which has a high visibility and is clearly outlined against the skyline, it was found that as the hindrance element of visibility near to a visual point or the area ratio increased, the preference for the Oreum scenery decreased.
The Analysis of Attributive Level of District Image for City Image - Focus on Busan City -

This article statistically analyzed contributive levels of district image based on an effect and a similarity index through the evaluation of citizens and suggested the efficient management system of a city image according to the results. For this study, Busan City was selected as a case city by the preceding literature and was investigated concerning district image and city image through a questionnaire. The new evaluation method for analysis of a city image was presented in this process. The results of this research are as follows: 1. Busan City has a substantial positive and culturally unique image, and each of its districts have other image characteristics. for example, the CBD district has a positive image, and the sea shore district has a busy and prosperous image, but the backward sea shore district has an image of stagnancy. 2. The image of Yeonje-gu has the largest effect on the image of Busan. Next in influence are Jung-gu, Saha-gu, Suyoung-gu, respectively. The effect index is closely connected with the variance of evaluative adjectives. 3. Busanjin-gu and Haeundae-gu have similar images to Busan City. Next in similarity are Nam-gu, Jung-gu, Youngdo-gu, Suyoung-gu, respectively. The similarity index is closely connected with the correlation of evaluative adjectives. Busan City and its districts can establish their image strategies with the above analyzed results. This study is meaningful in that a statistical evaluative method was proposed. With continued follow-up research, this study may serve as a systematic and logical model to improve the urban landscape and image.
A Study on the Discriminating Factor of 'Hyeon' and 'Ryeong' by the Names of Mountain Passes

The purpose of this study is to determine the basis for the names of mountain passes that have been different since antiquity, especially names such as those written in Chinese characters. For this purpose, this researcher focused on 108 mountain passes listed in the section of Gyeongsangdo that is a part of Joseon's representative human geographic literature, 'Sinjong Dongguk Yeoji Seungram'. Then the author found out their location by reviewing 'Joseon Hugi Jibang Jido', 'Daedong Yeojido' and 'Hanguk Jimyeong Chongram'. Out of the 180 passes, 30 were finally selected to be analyzed. Again 15 among 30 were found named as 'Hyeon', 7 as 'Ryeong' and remainder were called either term on occasion. The study tried to find out standards according to whether the 30 passes were named as 'Hyeon' or 'Ryeong'. To carry out the study, the author made 3 hypotheses. First, the passes' altitudes were examined. Then visual characteristics were investigated when seen from the summit of the passes. Finally, the number of the passes' turns was investigated to know whether this discriminates between 'Hyeon' and 'Ryeong'. The results of the study can be summarized as follows. With the altitudes and the visual characteristics as mentioned above, it was not possible to determine features that clearly discriminate 'Hyeon' from 'Ryeong'. However, the number of the turns was significantly different in accordance with the names of the passes, 'Hyeon', 'Ryeong' and 'Hyeon or Ryeong'. It seems that 'Hyeon' and 'Ryeong' were discriminatively used depending on how mountain passes were apparently perceived with the number of their turns.
Delineating Forest Patches around the Geumbuk Mountains from a Landscape Ecological Perspective

The objective of this study was to delineate forest patches in the cities around the Geum-buk mountains at the north of the Geum River using multiplesatellite remote sensing data. Landsat visible and near-infrared satellite images obtained at multiple dates in the growing season were used to create a forest distribution map. Fragstats 3.3 was used to get the landscape indices delineating the distribution of forest patches. Additional ground truth data was used to assess the accuracy of the classification. Factor analysis was used to get the 26 landscape indices clustered into 4 factors. Factor I was labeled as' size of forest patches', factor II as 'fragmentation of forest patches', factor III as 'shape of forest patches', and factor IV as 'complexity of forest patches'. Factor I described large patches and their core area, while others did small patches and their shape and complexity. Cities including Cheonan, Gongju, Cheongyang, and Boryeong near the main ridge of the Geumbuk Mtns. had a small number of large-sized forest patches. However, cities including Taean, Seosan, Dangjin, Hongseong near the ridge of the western Geumbuk Mtns. had a large number of small-sized forest patches. Finally, this study showed that the region near the coast line in Chung-nam province has various types of forest patches having an irregular forest edge due to the elevation and slope lower than the one of the region far from the coast line which is near the ridge of the Geum-buk Mountains. Remote sensing data were useful to understand the distribution of forest patches, and landscape indices could be keys to delineate the relationship between forest patches. And the factor analysis, which simplified 26 landscape indices into 4 landscape patterns allowed us to understand the distribution and relationship of forest patches in an easy way.
Selection of Kentucky Bluegrass(Poa pratensis L.) Cultivar for Golf Courses in Korea

Since the 1990s, the application of Kentucky bluegrass cultivars has increased in newly-constructed Korean golf courses as opposed to the previously-used zoysiagrass. However, there have been few reports studying the selection and characterization of these Kentucky bluegrass cultivars under Korean weather conditions. A total of 12 Kentucky bluegrass cultivars were tested for their adaptability in environmental stresses during summer conditions in Korea in order to select the best Kentucky bluegrass cultivars for use in Korean golf courses. This study found that two Kentucky bluegrass cultivars ('Midnight' and 'Bluestone') maintained their green throughout the summer season and had a high degree of root density, as compared to the other cultivars tested. These two cultivars also had a good rate of coverage in the early growth period. These characteristics make them suitable for application on sports fields and golf courses, which receive many divots and the frequent replacement of turfgrass sod caused by both biotic and abiotic stress. Two other cultivars, the 'Ginney' and 'Nuglade', also displayed good visual quality and high rate of coverage under summer conditions. In conclusion, the 'Midnight' and 'Bluestone' cultivars performed well in areas including the maintenance of their green color, the number of roots and the rate of coverage during the summer months. These characteristics are necessary for golf courses sports fields, which receive many divots and requirethe frequent replacement of turfgrass. further research on a range of Kentucky bluegrass cultivars, including a sensitivity test for many pathogens and recovery rates from a variety of stresses, is required in the near future.
