Spatial Crime Analysis using GIS

To deal with the modern intellectual criminal acts, various efforts have been tried. Especially, it is not difficult to watch the recent activities to analyze the criminal characteristics spatially using computing and GIS technology. In this study, the spatial features and patterns of crime are investigated. Based on the real criminal record in Seoul Korea, the crime is reconstituted with four major categories such as assault, larceny, robbery, and rape. Then the variables are derived based on the theory of criminology. The kernal density analysis is performed to investigate the criminal distribution, and the correlation between the main criminal causes and the criminal outbreak is examined by buffering analysis. In addition, the land price and land usages are correlated with social-economic factors of criminal patterns to produce the final crime map.
Development of Matriculation Management System Using GIS National Framework Data

As a number of new college students is dramatically decreasing, each college is trying to find various solutions for gathering many students and operating a school. In specialty, information such as entrance examination and matriculation status data is very important for a college to decide a direction of admission and public relations policy, and increase welfare of the school. Therefore, it is seriously needed for a school to introduce a matriculation management system that can do the effective analysis through various entrance examination and matriculation status data and decision factors of school. In this study, I developed a matriculation management system which can analyze information of applicants, successful candidates and registrants based on national framework data, and was able to analyze applicants, successful candidates, registrants by regional groups and the ratio of successful applicants against applicants and the change rate of applicants in the last 3 years. It is expected that the developed system can provide appropriate and rational information for public relations policy and operation to a college.
A Study on Detecting Neighboring Relation Among Point Segments of LIDAR Point Cloud and its Application

In this study, we recognized and joined parts of buildings separated during LIDAR point segmentation utilizing scan line characteristics, with an additional function to recognize neighboring relation among point segments. And we applied the relation to suggest a method to recognize earth point segment. From the test, we could confirm that it does not drop down the efficiency of point segmentation to be added with the function of recognizing neighboring relation and it is possibile to combine point segments to form a complete shaped building and to recognize earth point segment.
A Study on Forest Fire Detection from MODIS Data Using Local Spatial Association Analysis

Spatial outliers in remotely sensed imagery represent observed quantities showing unusual values compared to their neighbor pixel values. There have been various methods to detect the spatial outliers based on spatial autocorrelations in statistics and data mining. These methods may be applied in detecting forest fire pixels in the MODIS imageries from NASA's AQUA satellite. This is because the forest fire detection can be referred to as finding spatial outliers using spatial variation of brightness temperature. In this paper, we propose a new forest fire detection algorithm which is based on local spatial association analysis, and test the proposed algorithm to evaluate its applicability. In order to evaluate the proposed algorithm, the results were compared with the MODIS fire product provided by the NASA MODIS Science Team, which showed the possibility of the proposed algorithm in detecting the fire pixels.
Applications of GIS Spatial Analysis in Extracting Land Characteristics for Calculate Individual Declared Land Value

The current land characteristics survey to calculate an individual declared land value requires significant manpower, time, and cost. Accordingly, a revised method is required to reduce an economic cost and efficiently extract the information on land characteristics. This study proposed a utilization of spatial information as a means to rapidly and efficiently examine a survey on land characteristics and the method to obtain land characteristics that cannot be obtained in the KLIS (Korea Land Information System) among the land characteristics, which is a basic material in calculating an individual declared land value, via GIS spatial analysis. The proposed methods will not only reduce a significant time and cost as well as a demand necessary in a land characteristics survey but also provide an improvement direction to a current survey method for land characteristics.
An Estimation to Landslide Vulnerable Area of Rainfall Condition using GIS

Most areas in Kangwon Province are mountainous and vulnerable to landslide due to the rainy season in summer and the localized torrential downpour triggered by abnormal climate. In particular, the rainfall is one of direct reasons for landslide. In accordance with the analysis of the relevance between the landslide areas and the accumulated rainfall for four months, there are severe damages of landslide to the areas having more than 1,100 mm of rainfall during three(3) months. Further, it indicates that the more the accumulated rainfall is the greater the size of landslide. These analyses show that the rainfall causes the possible and potential landslide in the vulnerable areas. And also, it means that there exist strong possibilities of landslide even in the areas of lower vulnerability if the amount of rainfall is above certain standard level. Accordingly, in this study we stored the GIS database on the causes and factors of landslide in the southern parts of Kangwon province and conducted simulations on the change of distribution of vulnerable areas by varying the rainfall conditions and by using the evaluation data of landslide vulnerability. As such a result, we found that the landslide could potentially occur if the amount of rainfall is 200 mm and more.
A Study on the Computation of Deflection of the Vertical Referred to World Geodetic System by Astrogeodetic Data

Astronomic surveying has been regarded as an important method for absolute positioning of geodetic datum in each countries under the local geodetic reference system. The purposes of this study are to determine astrogeodetic geoidal heights referred to Bessel ellipsoid and to determine deflection of the vertical and geoidal heights referred to GRS80 of World Geodetic System by astronomic surveying data which have been surveyed after 1970 in Korea. The results show that
component of the deflection of the vertical distribute from -5.725" to 8.005" and
component distribute from -14.917" to 6.2" and astrogeodrtic geoidal heights distribute from 23 m to 27 m in the study area. Also, we could see that GRS80 was more optimal ellipsoid than Bessel 1841 ellipsoid to Korea through comparing both astrogeotic geoidal heights referred to GRS80 and Bessel 1841 ellipsoid.
Measuring Water Volume of Reservoir by Echosounding

This study is aimed to acquire the depth information and measure the water volume of reservoir using the robot-ship equipped with GPS and echosounder. Robot-ship is an automatic system for measuring exact depth and bed topography. According to field experiment results, measured water volume by the robot-ship data was not much exceeding 6.8% in comparison with existing water volume data, and it was guessed because of sediments of reservoir bottom. The robot-ship could be used to acquire economically and exactly the water depth and bed topography of reservoirs, dams, rivers and so on.
Developing Management System for Urban Facilities Based on Ubiquitous

The final object of this research is to construct general management system that can manage diverse facilities of city on the basis of ubiquitous technology. Defining data format of items in each management, type and code for the urban facilities, the researcher designed database of urban facilities through the process of establishing logic model and data modelling. By inputting designed database into RFID Tag of each urban facilities and using RFID Reader and PDA, the researcher developed system that can efficiently manage the basic attributes and information and management information of urban facilities. Applying the general management system for urban facilities constructed on the basis of ubiquitous, the researcher could check the information of target facilities and input revised data. Further, it was found that the characteristics of RFID Tag and GPS should improve the optimal hardware combination and PDA performance for the surrounding environmental influence and system performance.
Analysis of Economical Efficiency of Digital Map in Production Cost by Aerial LiDAR Surveying

Recently, three-dimensional (3D) GI (Geospatial Information) using LiDAR system has been used various fields such as the production of digital map, the modeling of 3D building and urban area, and analysis of communication network and environmental effect. In this study, the production cost of digital map by aerial LiDAR surveying were compared with the cost by aerial photograph surveying for analysis of economical efficiency. It is expected that the results of this study will be used base data for production, update, revision of digital map and curtail effect of national budget.
