Recently, with the demand for airservice increasing and localization accelerating, airport construction is booming. However, in the case of an unsuitable airport site selection, it might cause a reduction in airport service and a decrease in airport demand. Thus, it is necessary to construct a representative airport and choose a suitable site selection method for economical and efficient airports in order to make the utmost use of airport functions. In this study, GSIS was used to select the airport site and applied to case study areas. GSIS could present a new method for efficient and scientific analysis in airport site selection including various factors over an extensive area. The use of both, the paired comparison method and the delphi method, could improve the objectivity of analysis results in the process considering the relative weight grade of data and priority order of analysis factors, used in airport site selection.
A Development of Use Districting Management Using GIS

An improved model of 'use' or 'region' districting(or regional zoning) scheme has been proposed. GIS based prototype model of managing the semi-agricultural region is implemented in a PC based platform focusing the Yongin, Kyonggi-Do area. Throughout the process of users' requirement analysis, database design, and user interface design, it has been shown that the integrated system may shed light on the prospective usage by the city or county government officials regardless of the short functionalities and user interface. This study aims first at identifying the needs in the area of districting at local level and at suggesting a basic framework of database design and system implementation in regard to region districting. The ARC/INFO, ArcView/Avenue based PC-based decision supports system presented herein is hoped to be supplemented with the inclusion of time factor in its database to cover and reflect the temporal variations associated with the plans.
A Study on the Application of GPS for Computation of the Vertical Deflection and Astro-coordinates

Conventional procedures to determine vertical deflections and astronomical coordinates require the stellar observations which be under restraints of clear night-time weather conditions, surrounding environment, long observation time and the use of instruments, etc. Therefore the more effective observation method subjugatting these problems has requested. The objective of this study is to propose method to compute vertical deflections, astronomical coordinates(latitude and longitude), and astronomical azimuth by mixing GPS observation results and orthometric heights. For this study, programmed the program which able to obtain the change in geoid undulation by using the GPS- determined geodetic height difference and the orthometric height difference, and GPS satellite surveying was performed at both ten points of astronomical points and four triangulation points around each astronomical station in South Korea. The Astronomical results determined from GPS observations compared to those determined from both conventional astronomical measurements and the recent earth gravitational Model(EGM96).
A Study on the Map Accuracy Assessment of Positioning Data Using Statistical Approach Analysis

This paper suggests a Map Accuracy Standards by analyzing U.S. National Map Accuracy Standards, by considering korean terrain feature and statistical error theory for paper and digital maps on the scale of 1:50,000. Map accuracy standards require horizontal accuracy to be reported as a circular error with 90% confidence level through Linear Error Probable(LEP) theory and Circular Error Probable(CEP) theory. In order to verify the proposed methodology for positioning accuracy testing, several kinds of test point were selected and tested. These test points were extracted at the centers of roads and bridges, the comers of the independent building, the edges of geographical botany, and the tops of mountains. The positioning accuracy assessment was peformed by comparing the positions of test points in digital maps generated three different sources with those acquired by high accurate GPS surveying. The digital maps were produced from aerial photographs and SPOT satellite image using analytical plotter and 1:50,000 paper map.
Characteristics and Causal Factors of Urban Growth in Korea

Korea is one of the countries most greatly affected by modern urbanization in its speed and its magnitude. Urbanization in Korea however has great differences compare to those in Europe, America and even developing countries. The main purpose of this study is to evaluate the specific causes of urbanization in Korea to interpret past trends accurately and to predict future trends properly. To accomplish the purpose cross section data of 806 cities during 1980-1994 has computed in terms of totals and regression analysis has been performed to measure the relative impact of each factor.
A study on the environmentally sustainable planning techniques with the satellite data

The purpose of this paper is to study the using method of the satellite image processing and GIS(Geographic Information System) map-algebra for the sustainable (land-use) plan. The research has been made by the two kinds of approaching steps. The first one is to allocate the sustainable zoning which is applicable to the environmental and the legal restriction elements base on space structure. The second one is to make a more sustainable plan through the extension of analysis range and the inclusion of analyzed environmental impacts within the plan making processes.
The Effective Maintenance of Sewage Treatment Plant with Development of Database Management Library

In recent years, there have been emerging the establishment and extension of sewage treatment facilities in many cities due to population growth and high standard for sewage treatment. The objective of this study is to develop and implement a Data Management Library which could deal with enormous amount of graphic and attribute data effectively and afficiently. Based on the Data Management Library developed, the Sewage Treatment Management System(STMS) was Implemented and investigated in preparation for the extension of sewage treatment facilities. Cheongju city enviromental station was selected as a test site. We first analyzed current work flow in sewage treatment and then performed database design suitable for managing sewage treatment in effective fashion. The STMS consists mainly of two parts : one is for manipulating the graphic and attribute data and the other for application of sewage treatment related works. Conclusively, the STMS developed in this study could be utilized as a comer stone for an effective maintenance and management of sewage treatment.
Power Transmission Line Routing Using GIS

With the rapid socioeconomic change the siting of SOC is getting more difficult due to so-called NIMBY syndrome. The objective methodology using GIS was かid as a case study to solve the complexity of the power transmission line routing. We anticipated that the new optimization of transmission routing would be the efficient and reasonable way in getting the public acceptance and settling the public complaints from transmission construction project in our country.

According to the functions of city are getting more complicate and diverse, recently the concerns about underground space have been risen, and many infra-structures for social activities are now constructed under the ground. To maintain these kind of infra-structures effectively, it is necessary for concerned workers to access easily to the existing drawings and design information. and to modify the design drawings immediately o the changes of design value. And in the field of construction, immediate structural analysis and generation of design drawings will help to promote manufacturing ability, the quality of products, and the effectiveness of maintenance of design materials effectively.
Underground facilities Detecting Accuracy

Rapid development of city has made a lots of urban facilities buried under ground, therefore how to bury underground facilities and how to operate them becomes more and more important. However, due to shortage of composite operation data for burying the facilities under ground, a lots of individual and nation's properties have been destroted and even many people killed. under the circumstances, we need to detect the facilities in detail and in accuracy and we can surgest for underground facilities detecting accuracy as below.
A Study for Implementing of National GIS Training Program : Analysis of the Results for the First Year

A national program for GIS Training had been established by a feasibility study which was performed during the period of from July, 1995 through April, 1996 initiated by Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST). Systems Engineering Research Institute (SERI), one of government-supported institutes in the fields of software development, have taken in charge of Korean GIS training program with emphases on short courses since July, 1996. To distinguish these national programs from those of major commercial GIS software vendor, GIS training programs by executing staffs within SERE have been established with the basis of its own educational paradigm; therefore, they was composed of several specific training curricular developed by executing staffs. In this paper, the practical aspects during execution and progress of these programs are described, and all courses named after decision maker course, GIS manager course, and user course in the first year of GIS training program are evaluated with questionnaire result riven to the trainees. As results, the satisfaction-rate after the decision maker, the GIS manager, and the user course is 84.8%, 81.2%, and 66.7% respectively These whole results are shown as more affirmative ones than expected, and each result, as a kind of feedback of this executing program, plays an important role to flourish Korean GIS training project in future.
A Study on the CCD Camera Calibration for Close-Range Photogrammetry

Because CCD camera acquires the digital images without separate processing, its availabilities are increased. In this study, for CCD camera calibration DLT equation and radial or decentering distortion equation are combined and the calibration parameters are calculated using three dimensional test model. The digital images acquired by CCD camera are matched using coefficient of correlation and the three dimensional coordinates of objects are determined. Also, the potential usefulness of CCD camera in close range photogrammetry is examined.
