Application of Video Photogrammetry for Generating and Updating Digital Maps
Yoo, Hwan-Hee ; Sung, Jae-Ryeol ;
Journal of Korean Society for Geospatial Information System, volume 6, issue 2, 1998, Pages 11~20
Although aerial photogrammetry has been used to generate or update digital maps. It is difficult to make the spatial and attribute data for all kinds of objects on the ground with only aerial photogrammetry. Therefore, we are getting informations of the object on the ground through an on-the-spot survey In order to improve accuracy and reliability of on-the-spot survey in this study, we obtained stereo images from high resolution digital camera (1152*864 pixels) and developed the video photogrammetry which was able to determine the three dimensional coordinates from stereo images by applying DLT(Direct Linear Transformation). Also, the developed video photogrammetry could generate and update the spatial and attribute data in digital maps by using a function that could connect three dimensional coordinates with the attribute data.

Seo, Byoung-Jun ; Kim, Yong-Il ; Eo, Yang-Dam ; Jeong, Jae-Joon ;
Journal of Korean Society for Geospatial Information System, volume 6, issue 2, 1998, Pages 21~34
SAR is an active imaging sensor emitting its own energy source and can be operated in all weather conditions. Thus SAR provides data which can not be obtained by an optical sensor. In this study, the potentials and problems of the techniques for DEM extraction from the SAR imagery were evaluated through theoretical researches and practical experiments. And then the accuracy was tested by RMS error between the digitized map contour and the results from this experiment. Here, two types of DEM extraction method were evaluated. One was an analytical photogrammetric technique, and the other was a SAR interferometric processing. From the experiment, we found that the photogrammetric technique is currently the most suitable method considering topographic conditions of Korea. In the SAR interferometry technique, we also conclude that the problems caused by decorrelations due to the temporal reasons and due to the scattering effects from vegetation should be solved.
Development of Road Guide Sign Management System Based on National Digital Base Maps
Kim, Si-Gon ;
Journal of Korean Society for Geospatial Information System, volume 6, issue 2, 1998, Pages 35~44
Road guide sign is one of important traffic facility, which guides a driver a direction to go. A road is being newly built and/or an existing road can be temporarily closed very often at metropolitan area. Such information has to be linked to a road guide sign and to be updated in time. Otherwise, it might cause not only confusion to a driver but also traffic accident and/or traffic congestion. However, road guide signs are not properly managed at this time since the amounts of information are huge and they are being managed through paper maps manually. A decision-making framework has been developed to manage a variety of information of road guide signs based on the concept of GIS(Geographic Information Systems). Especially, it is designed on the fact that the existing national digital base maps under the NGIS(National Geographic Information Systems) program can be utilized. This framework has several functions such as the manipulation of statistics, landmark linkages along the selected traffic corridor and automatic design of signboard's content. This system is applied to the Kangnam district in Seoul Metropolitan area (SMA) for a case study.

Digital photogrammetry is growing today using inexpensive personal confuter and digital image Processing technique instead of expensive analytical plotter in data acquisition from aerial photograph. Ortho photo in replacement of paper map is indispensable in the application of Geo-Spatial Information System and research activities about it are active in the domestic domain. Also the availability of ortho photo is greatly various in existing related fields using topographic map and expected to be used for new technology in near future. For this purpose, design of each module for ortho photo has been carried out with digital map and image. It was shown that the batch program for ortho photo generation developed in this study, could be used effectively as an effective data acquisition method for GSIS.

This study deals with a auto-extraction of land characteristics using a GSIS. Major algorithm and a evaluation program was developed to automate the entire Process of land characteristics survey Through the automatic extraction of land information. To establish such a process, a method was provided to automatically extract detailed land information such as the shape, height, direction, road contact conditions, which could not be available in previous studies. The results showed that the adoption of such a automated process could lead the whole works related to the official land-value evaluation and securing residential complex to be more efficient and cost-saving in a scientific way comparing with existing process.
The Development of a GIS-based Sewer-network Analysis System
Lee, Jung-Hun ; Kim, Kye-Hyun ;
Journal of Korean Society for Geospatial Information System, volume 6, issue 2, 1998, Pages 69~79
It is one of the most crutial thing to secure efficient infrastructure of social infrastructure Including rna drinking water, sewer, gas, and electricity, etc. in modern society. Among them, the sourer system need to be properly maintained so as to sustain water quality over the large watershed thereby to provide reasonable level of living environment A few municipalities and private firms have so in been using sewer management system for assessing existing sewer network and auxiliary facilities. Such existing system can only provide functions to manage the sewer pipe itself and they can not fully estimate the amount of sewage water over the pipe through 4he network analysis due to the deficiency of the system Such a limited sewer network analysis function can only analyze the whole network under the assumption of uniformity. The results from such a process can not be fully implemented in the field. Therefore, this study emphasized the development of a sewer management system which can provide practical values from network analysts considering areal peculiarities using a zoning map utilizing a GIS. The system can support analyzing scenarios due to the changes of sewer amounts from the changes of population densities and rainfall amounts not to mention of calculating sewer amount for individual sewer pipes. furthermore, the system can support the decision making for better designing sewer facilities from the expansion of metropolitan areas and constructing satellite cities. Eventually, it will contribute to enhance the effectiveness of sewer-related works and services for residents as well as supporting a decision making for minor and major trouble-shootings.

The main object of this study was to prove the effectiveness of satellite Image data for extraction of the pine needle gall midge damaged area in the part of Kangwon-do area, and to present the detailed procedure of a digital image processing for extraction of those damaged area. The effectiveness of extraction of damaged area was improved by using the BRCT(Backwards Radiance Correction Transformation) with DEM for the normalization of topographic effects. The topographic surface analysis of the extracted damaged area revealed that the general damaged area was at south-west and south-east aspect with the slope of 31 to 38 degrees, the temperature of 21 to 25, and 23% to 39% of the highest altitude mountains. The new damaged area in which expanded area was at 27 to 30 degree of slope, the aspect of 46 to 180 degrees, the temperature of
and 27% to 39% of the highest altitude mountains. The NDI(New Damaged Index) was developed using the environment factor and simple vegetation index.
A Study on the Comparision Between Map Projection Methods of TM and Polyhedric
Park, Wei-Keun ;
Journal of Korean Society for Geospatial Information System, volume 6, issue 2, 1998, Pages 119~132
Much information on the terrain and the space has been depicted to maps of various form according to the map scale and the application. In Korea the base map system was made by only one projection method(Transvers Mercator projection). This is the reason to study this paper, because I think singular map projection method can't satisfy the various map scales and application. In this paper Meridian Are Length, Parallel Are Length of ellipsoid and the area of ellipsoidal surface-the length, the width and area of the map scale 1/5,000, 1/25,000, 1/5,000, 1/1,000, will be calculated and transformed to the plane length and area by Transvers Mercartor projection and Polyhedrical projection. The projection distortion which came into existence on this occasion was compared and analyzed by this Paper. And Properties on TM and Polyhedrical projection were understood. Lastly this paper intended to present suitable map projections according to the map scales and the purpose of use.
A Study On Extracting Surface-Specific Point Using The Cross Section of The Terrain
Ryoo, Seung-Taek ; Yoon, Kyoung-Hyun ;
Journal of Korean Society for Geospatial Information System, volume 6, issue 2, 1998, Pages 133~141
Terrain modelling is composed of a method using the rectangular grid and another using the triangulated irregular network. The method using the triangulated irregular network is most widely used because it can express the characteristics of the terrain well with only a small amount of information on the terrain and also reduces the rendering time. The process of extracting the surface-specific point and a triangular process is needed to construct such triangulated irregular network. This paper concentrates on the process of extracting the surface-specific point. The 8-direction neighborhood method and other transformed methods of the former method are frequently used to extract the surface-specific point. Another method which eliminates the unnecessary points using the Polygon reduction method is also suggested However, the 8-direction neighborhood method has a big fault of also drawing out some unnecessary points. To resolve such problem, we suggest a method of extracting the surface-specific point using the cross section of the terrain. This method reduces the time to extract the surface-specific point and enables a more precise extraction with less terrain information.
