Coupled-Fed Planar Monopole Antenna for LTE/WWAN Mobile Handset Applications

In this paper, a coupled-fed monopole antenna for LTE/WWAN mobile handset applications is presented. The antenna consists of a monopole, a coupling strip, a feeding pad, a stub, and a shorting strip. The basic resonance of the monopole combines with the resonance formed by the coupling that occurs between the coupling strip and the feeding pad to include LTE700(698~787 MHz), GSM850(824~894 MHz), and GSM900(890~960 MHz) bands. The resonance of the stub combines with the harmonics of the monopole to include GSM1800(1,710~1,880 MHz), GSM1900(1,850~1,990 MHz), and UMTS(1,920~2,170 MHz) bands. Therefore, the proposed antenna is suitable as antenna for hexa-band mobile handset applications, covering LTE700, GSM850, GSM900, GSM1800, GSM1900, and UMTS bands. A stable and omni-directional radiation pattern with reasonable gains is observed within the operating bandwidth.
Design and Implementation of Compact Ultra Wideband Patch Antenna Using L-Feed and Slot-Feed

In this paper, the method of designing a wideband antenna has been introduced through the design technique that simultaneously employs L- and slot-type feeds. Using the two kinds of feeds and additional fence structure, a compact wideband patch antenna has been realized. The size of the patch has been reduced by about 30 % based on the low frequency(824 MHz) and the full fractional bandwidth is wider than 100 %. The L-feed element is for the EM coupling feeding at the low frequency, while it functions as a feeding line for the power coupling through the slot at the high frequency. The proposed antenna has been designed not only for wideband operations but also for a proper array element with a reduced size. Thus, the foundation for developing the ultra wideband patch array antennas has been prepared. The fabricated antenna has been found to have good characteristics on V.S.W.R and the radiation patterns over the full bands. The experimental and computed results are shown to be in good agreement.
A Multi-Polarization Reconfigurable Microstrip Antenna Using PIN Diodes

In this paper, a multi polarization reconfigurable microstrip antenna that can be used selectively for four polarizations(vertical polarization, horizontal polarization, right hand circular polarization, left hand circular polarization) at the S-band is presented. The proposed antenna consists of four PIN diodes and a microstrip patch with a cross slot and a circular slot and is fed by utiliting electromagnetic coupling between the microstrip patch and the feed line. The proposed antenna has a DC bias network to supply DC voltage to each PIN diode and the polarization can be determined by controlling the ON /OFF states of four PIN diodes. The fabricated antenna has a VSWR below 2 in the vertical polarization(3.17~3.21 GHz), the horizontal polarization(3.16~3.20 GHz), the left hand circular polarization (3.08~3.19 GHz), and the right hand circular polarization(3.10~3.2 GHz) frequency bands. The designed antenna has the cross polarization level higher than 20 dB, a gain over 5 dBi for the linear polarization states, and 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth wider than 50 MHz in the circular polarization states.
Circular Dual Mode Horn Antenna(CDMHA) with Modified Aperture to Improve E/H-Plane Radiation Pattern Symmetry

In this paper, a circular dual mode horn with modified aperture is proposed to improve a E/H-plane radiation pattern symmetry of a conventional oversized circular dual mode horn. The proposed antenna consists of a feeding section, a mode generation section and a phase matching section which has aperture shape transition from circle to ellipse or rectangle to improve a E/H-plane radiation pattern symmetry. To compare the performances between the proposed antenna and the convenional circular dual mode horn, the conventional circular dual mode horn and the proposed circular dual mode horn with rectangular aperture are fabricated and researched at 15 GHz. The measured results show that the conventional circular dual mode horn has 3.394 dB difference while the proposed antenna has only 0.539 dB difference between E and H-plane radiation patterns within the -11 dB beamwidth(
) which is required beamwidth of the feed horn for the maximum aperture efficiency where f/d ratio of reflector antenna is 1.
A New Folded Corrugated SIW with DC Biasing Capability

Substrate integrated waveguide(SIW) constructed by two metal planes and conductive vias in a dielectric substrate, have all the conductors connected each other and hence, cannot be biased by DC sources. We propose a new folded corrugated substrate integrated waveguide(FCSIW) that can be DC-biased. Since the proposed FCSIW replaces the SIW conducting vias by folded open subs, it can supply the DC sources. The FCSIW has better transmission characteristics and 30 % less width than the common corrugated substrate integrated waveguide(CSIW) having a serious leakage generation problem. The FCSIW shows better insertion loss(1.49 dB) compared with that(3.08 dB) of the CSIW measured for 154 mm length devices and averaged at 9~15 GHz frequency band. No leakage has been observed from crosstalk measurements of the FCSIW.
Design and Implementation of 3-Dimensional Laminated Dielectric Ceramic Filter in Waveguide Using a DWFD Program

The program for dielectric ceramic waveguide filter was developed based on the direct coupled filter of
step impedance prototype. This developed program was called DWFD(Direct coupled Waveguide Filter Design). The filter was designed by 3-dimensional laminated type to reduce the size at the 1 GHz. S scattering matrix for this filter was calculated using the DWFD program. The width of inductive irises for laminated filter was computed by HFSS simulation tool. This waveguide filter was designed by 8 poles with bandwidth 25 MHz at the center frequency 881.5 MHz. By using a dielectric constant 35.4 and laminated type, the size of filter was reduced with width 50 mm and height 48 mm rapidly. We can see that the measured results agree well with the HFSS simulation result. Finally, this paper is shown that the design and implementation of waveguide filters can be presented by using DWFD program simply.
Exposure Level Analysis of EMF Strength on Human around Base Station

As the number of base stations for mobile communication services rapidly grows with the development of mobile communications and the increase of radio-use devices, there are hazardous concerns raised on the possible health effects of EMF(Electro-magnetic fields) radiated from base station antennas. Since 2007, KCA(Korea Communications Agency) has been measuring the EMF on base station defined by Radio Act. This paper was studied to provide objective and accurate information that relieved anxiety of people by analyzing the measurement results on EMF strength. Also, we suggest to effectiveness and improvement of EMF measurement institution by analyzing measurement results since it was introduced on June 2007.
Manufacturing of a Korean Hand Phantom with Human Electrical Properties at 835 MHz and 1,800 MHz Bands

Interest of the hand effect on the electromagnetic wave are internationally increasing with the increase of the use of the mobile phone. IEC TC106(International Electrotechnical Commission, Technical Committee 106) promotes international research exchange program in order to reflect the effect of human hands in the standard assessment method of human exposure dosimetry by the electromagnetic wave of mobile phones. Since current commercialized hand phantom is manufactured by taking into account the average size of westerners and provides only one grip posture, it imposes many restrictions on the accurate SAR measurement. Therefore, the development of proper hand phantom accounting for domestic situation and various grip posture capability is essential in order to analyze the accurate effect of human hand on the exposure estimation. In this paper, a jelly hand phantom suitable for Korean was manufactured with various grip posture capability at 835 MHz and 1,800 MHz bands. Although the tolerances of permittivity and conductivity of the manufactured hand phantom are with
each, it was much less than CTIA(Cellular Telecommunication Industry Association) tolerance of
at both bands. Its 3D CAD(3 Dimensional Computer Aided Design) file which was developed can be utilized for the simulation of human hand effect on SAR measurement of mobile phones. The findings in this study can be utilized for the analysis of human hand effect on SAR measurement of a mobile phone.
Two-Port Vector Network Analysis System with a Vector Signal Channel

This paper presents a vector network analysis system for 2-port scattering parameters of microwave devices using some basic microwave instruments/devices such as signal generators, vector voltmeter, directional couplers and frequency mixers. The analytical model and implementation method for scattering parameter measurements - which can replace the vector network analyzers - are presented. The performance of the implemented system is evaluated through 1- and 2-port scattering parameter measurements, respectively. The vector volt signals which determine the scattering parameters are detected in two distinct methods depending on the frequency band of interests; a direct-detection method with a single signal generator and vector voltmeter for relatively low band and a heterodyne method to frequency down-mix associated with an additional signal source as well as frequency mixers for high band are used, respectively. Using these two methods, scattering parameters of UHF and X bands are evaluated and their performances are verified through a comercial vector network analyzer.
A Study on Block Processing Approach for Mono-Static Terrain Imaging Radar

This paper describes a block processing approach to detect targets in front of mono-static terrain imaging radar (TIR). It is difficult to employ several conventional imaging methods of the synthetic aperture radar(SAR) because the TIR is an ultra-wide-band(UWB) type of radar and employs a dechirp-on-receive process. To design an available imaging method, a block processing approach which conducts a range compression and an azimuth compression is proposed in this paper. The complete derivation of the proposed approach is presented. The results of simulations and field tests are demonstrated to show the performance and validity of the proposed approach.
Modeling and Simulation Techniques for Performance Analysis of High Resolution SAR System

In this paper, modeling and simulation for performance analysis of high resolution SAR system has been carried out in the time, frequency and numeric domain using ADS Ptolemy simulation tool of Agilent corporation. SAR system consists of antenna, controller and transceiver. Error parameters affecting SAR system performances have been defined, modeled and simulated such as phase noise of frequency synthesizer, amplitude and phase characteristic of TWTA, sampling frequency of waveform generator and I/Q imbalance. Finally, the development requirements of SAR system based on the impulse response function have been derived.
Efficient Acquisition of High-Quality ISAR Images Using the Discrete Gabor Representation in an Oversampling Scheme

Inverse synthetic aperture radar(ISAR) images have been widely used in non-cooperative target recognition(NCTR). One of the most important issues in ISAR imaging is the improvement of the image smeared by target motion. In this paper, we propose the discrete Gabor representation(DGR) in an oversampling scheme for efficient acquisition of high-quality ISAR images. The DGR compartmentally assigns the Gabor coefficients to unit cells of the time-frequency grid related to the given Gabor logons. Thus, it can show an excellent time-frequency concentration and effectively discriminates the Doppler components from point-scatterers. The simulation results demonstrated that the DGR not only obtained high-quality ISAR images but also retained computational efficiency.
Comparison on Track Formation Range between TWS and Adaptive Tracking Using Markov Chain Analysis in a Radar System

Compared with the TWS(Track While Scan) tracking that uses scan-to-scan correlation at search illuminations for targets track, a phased array radar can use adaptive tracking which assigns additional track illuminations and the track formation range can be improved as a result. In this paper, an adaptive tracking, the search and track illuminations of a target are synchronized such that the extra illuminations are evenly distributed between the search illuminations, is proposed. Markov chain and track formation range for the proposed adaptive tracking are shown with them for the conventional TWS. The simulation result shows that the proposed adaptive tracking has improved track formation range by 27.6 % compared with the conventional TWS tracking under same track confirmation criterion.
