Journal of the Korean Society for Precision Engineering, volume 25, issue 2, 2008, Pages 35~42
This study introduces a robust feature detector for sonar data from a general fixed-type of sonar ring. The detector is composed of a data association filter and a feature extractor. The data association filter removes false returns provided frequently from sonar sensors, and classifies set of data from various objects and robot positions into a group in which all the data are from the same object. The feature extractor calculates the geometries of the feature for the group. We show the possibility of extracting circle feature as well as a line and a point features. The proposed method was applied to a real home environment with a real robot.

Journal of the Korean Society for Precision Engineering, volume 25, issue 2, 2008, Pages 43~48
This paper proposes a new method for measuring the power of spherical and cylindrical lens with 6 points light source, which is composed of a LED and six holes, and magnification ellipse fitting algorithm. Each measured diagonal length of 6 points light source is determined by the target lens power. After finding the center position of each light point with threshold method, 3 axis-diagonal lengths were calculated. The long axis and short axis power of cylindrical lens can be calculated by using magnification ellipse fitting algorithm with the magnification relationships between the initial diagonal lengths and the measured diagonal lengths changed by lens power.

Journal of the Korean Society for Precision Engineering, volume 25, issue 2, 2008, Pages 49~56
In order to reduce energy consumption, secondary controlled system has been applied to many types of equipments. In lifting equipments or press machines using hydraulic cylinder, a hydraulic transformer is used as a control component instead of a valve for motion control and a component for recovering potential energy of load. The transformer is a combination of a variable displacement pump/motor as a secondary controlled element and a fixed displacement pump/motor. In this paper the effect of transformer is studied. Multiple closed loop controllers with displacement feedback of variable pump/motor, speed feedback and position feedback of cylinder are used. The efficiency and energy consumption when cylinder is driven up and down is calculated by simulation. Simulation results show that considerable energy saving is achieved by choosing load ratio, circuit type and supply pressure.

Journal of the Korean Society for Precision Engineering, volume 25, issue 2, 2008, Pages 65~71
In this paper, we propose a new driving mode control algorithm for a mobile robot based on obstacle detection. The robot has a variable geometry single-tracked mechanism, so it can maximize a contact length with ground for the adaptability to off-road and puesue a stable system due to the lower center of gravity. However this robot system embodied passive type according to operator. In this reason, several problems are detected. So, this research presents a new method of obstacle detection using PSD infrared sensors and translates the variable tracks on the best suited driving mode actively. And experimental results about mentioned are presented.

Journal of the Korean Society for Precision Engineering, volume 25, issue 2, 2008, Pages 72~79
In the redundant actuation system which has more actuators than a system's mobility, there are various method to determine actuated torques because those are not determined uniquely. This paper presents a torque distribution method using weighted-pseudoinverse to optimize the maximum torque of various actuated inputs of the redundant system. The various weighting factor of weighted-pseudoinverse is studied to reduce maximum actuated torque. This method is experimentally applied to 3RRR parallel robot, which shows that presented method can efficiently reduce the maximum actuated torque.

Lee, Jang-Yong ;
Journal of the Korean Society for Precision Engineering, volume 25, issue 2, 2008, Pages 96~104
An egg grading machine is composed of many mechanisms of which functions are to carry eggs to the bucket in that sensors are located to categorize eggs by their weight, to transfer eggs from the basket of packer holder to the mold tray, to feed the mold tray dispenser after egg chairs are filled with eggs. This paper deals with the analysis and new design of packer holder mechanism of which function is transfer eggs vertically from the bucket conveyor to the mold tray dispenser. Egg is fragile to impact so in designing packer holder mechanism it is necessary to estimate moving speed, acceleration and impact when eggs are touched by any links of mechanism and mold tray dispenser. A new packer holder mechanism is proposed in this paper, which use quick return mechanism composed of 6 links with pin and contact joints.

Journal of the Korean Society for Precision Engineering, volume 25, issue 2, 2008, Pages 105~114
Natural element method (NEM) is quick in research activities by natural sciences and mechanical engineering fields, and from which good results are watched by various engineering fields and applied too. However no paper or research about the applied case has announced yet. Therefore on this paper, I will rediscover an optimum design and apply NEM into other fields with NEM for existing optimum design of mainly using FEM. NEM and genetic algorithm (GA) are applied to optimize a membrane with a center hole. The optimal design obtained by NEM is compared to the counterpart obtained by the finite element method (FEM). Result by NEM is found to be better than the result by FEM. NEM can be a feasible analysis tool in design optimization.

Mostly used sensors have wired powering and two-way cable systems. It is difficult to employ wired sensor network in ubiquitous era because of a number of sensors and cables. Therefore, sensor networks move from wired systems to wireless systems for the future. However, the power source is a critical obstacle for wireless sensornodes. This research represents the new power source which supplies energy sensor node, maintains over 10 years, and thus replaces batteries with limit of lifetime. The system with piezo materials scavenges extra energies such as vibration and acceleration from the environment. Then it converts the scavenged mechanical energy to electrical energy for powering a sensor, a controller and a circuit for regulating voltage and transmitting sensor value. This study explains the properties of piezo material through theoretical analysis and experiments, and demonstrates powering sensor and transmitting data with stored energy (35mJ) for 14 sec. The developed system provides a solution to overcome the critical problem of making up wireless sensor networks.

A 3D structure production method for microstereolithography is a useful way that produces complex structures with flexible processes and low cost. Several UV curable resins were blended and the optimal resin for micro-lens fabricate was selected through viscosity, workability and transmission tests. It consists of 1, 6 - Hexanediol diacrylate with 15 Apha and Isobornyl acrylate for reducing some shrinkage. When fabricating a micro-lens array on large surface, some distortion of shape occurred because of the surface tension between cured part. To overcome this problem, the optimal processing conditions were derived from considering amount of the resin and surface tension. Large surface Micro-lens array, which are a type of elliptical convex and consist of 18,000 micro-lens in the range of 2cm*2cm were fabricated. The focal length to the X-axis and Y-axis were calculated. To verify the performance, measure an energy distribution of transmitted light from the Large surface Micro-lens array.

Journal of the Korean Society for Precision Engineering, volume 25, issue 2, 2008, Pages 131~139
This paper presents a new saliency map which is constructed by providing dynamic weights on individual features in an input image to search ROI(Region Of Interest) or FOA(Focus Of Attention). To construct a saliency map on there is no a priori information, three feature-maps are constructed first which emphasize orientation, color, and intensity of individual pixels, respectively. From feature-maps, conspicuity maps are generated by using the It's algorithm and their information quantities are measured in terms of entropy. Final saliency map is constructed by summing the conspicuity maps weighted with their individual entropies. The prominency of the proposed algorithm has been proved by showing that the ROIs detected by the proposed algorithm in ten different images are similar with those selected by one-hundred person's naked eyes.
Motion Control of Pneumatic Servo Cylinder Using Neural Network
Cho, Seung-Ho ;
Journal of the Korean Society for Precision Engineering, volume 25, issue 2, 2008, Pages 140~147
This paper describes a Neural Network based PD control scheme for motion control of pneumatic servo cylinder. Pneumatic systems have inherent nonlinearities such as compressibility of air and nonlinear frictions present in cylinder. The conventional linear controller is limited in some applications where the affection of nonlinear factor is dominant. A self-excited oscillation method is applied to derive the dynamic design parameters of linear model. Based on the parameters thus identified, a PD feedback compensator is designed first and then a neural network is incorporated. The experiments of a trajectory tracking control using the proposed control scheme are performed and a significant reduction in tracking error is achieved by comparing with those of a PD control.
The 3-Dimensional Finite Element Analysis of Minimum Implant Structure for Edentulous Jaw
Jang, In-Sik ;
Journal of the Korean Society for Precision Engineering, volume 25, issue 2, 2008, Pages 148~155
The aim of the study is to interpret the distribution of occlusal force by 3-dimensional finite element analysis of ISP(Implant Supported Prosthesis) supported by minimum number of implant to restore the edentulous patients. For this study, the Astra Tech implant system is used. Geometric modeling for 6 and 4 fixture ISP group is performed with respect to the bone, implant and one piece superstructure, respectively. Implants are arbitrarily placed according to the anatomical limit of lower jaw and for the favorable distribution of occlusal force, which is applied at the end of cantilever extension of ISP with 30mm. Element type is tetrahedral for finite element model and the typical mechanical properties, Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio of each material, cortical, cancellous bone and implant material are utilized for the finite element analysis. From this study, we can see the distribution of equivalent stress equal to real situation and speculate the difference in the stress distribution in the whole model and at each implant fixture, From the analysis, the area of maximum stress is distributed on distal contact area between bone and fixture in the crestal bone. The maximum stress is 53MPa at the 0.2mm area from the bone-implant interface in the maximum side for 300N load condition for 4 fixture case, which is slightly less than the stress calculated from allowable strain. This stress has not been deduced to directly cause the loss of crestal bone around implant fixture, but the stress can be much reduced as the old peoples may have lower chewing force. Thus, clinical trial may be performed with this treatment protocol to use 4 fixtured ISP for old patients.
