A New Cold Extrusion Process of Helical Gear and its Upper Bound Analysis

A new helical gear extrusion process was proposed and its numerical solution program based on the upper bound method was developed. In the analysis the involute curve was used as a shape of die and the upper bound method was used to calculate energy dissipation rate. By this method the power requirement and optimum conditions necessary for extruding helical gear were successfully calculated. These numerical solutions were in good agreement with experimental data. In the experiment, die life was greatly improved compared with that of Samanta process and 4 .approx. 5 class helical gear of KS standard for automobile transmission was successfully manufactured.
A Study on Modeling and Control of Excavator Engine/Pump System

According to the recent increase of demands for multi-function and economics on hydraulic excavator, it is required that excavator should have simple operation, higher and operational efficiency, however the modeling of engine/pump system of excavator is not prescribed by the paper. So, in this paper the modeling of engine/pump system of excavator is suggested by identification method from step response and verified effectiveness of identification system by comparing with experimental results which was conducted using PID controller. To improve the problem of parameter variation and modeling error in the system, sliding mode control was introduced and new switching surface was designed. This control algorithm was applied to a hydraulic excavator by simulation, and its effectiveness was verified, and the results of variable structure system for the excavator system using a output component was compared with that of full state feedback when load disturbances and system paramenter variation exist.

Development of Expert System for Tool Selection on Turning Operation

This paper deals with developing an Expert system for tool selection using knowledge base system approach, and its application. For the sake of building of knowledge base, the information from process through sensor, tool handbook and interview with expert are referrenced and managed. The system developed shows good application flexibility in providing the actual cutting process with the selection of tool(insert, holder) and cutting conditions(feed, speed, rake type, and so on), is found as a useful system for real-time machining process. The Expert system for tool selection is written in TURBO PROLOG ver. 2.0 for inference engine capability, and can be run in interactive mode for user friendliness. In order to apply the system developed in actual cutting process, more parameters should be considered and scrutinized, and the system should be further extended in modular basis.
Analysis of an Infinitely Long Squeeze Film Damper Operating with an Electro-Rheological Fluid

This paper addresses on the determination of damping coefficients of an infinitely long squeeze film damper operating with an electro-rheological (ER) fluid. The ER fluid behaves as Bingham fluid with an electric field dependent yield shear stress. AS phenomenological model of the fluid is adopted for the relationship between the yield shear and the intensity of the electric field imposed on the fluid domain. The model is then incorporated with the governing equation and associated boundary conditions of the squeeze film damper executing a circula centered orbit for the expression of dimension- less damping coefficients. Numerical simulation is performed to evaluate the performance improvement of the proposed squeeze film damper.

A Study on High Performance Controller Design of Elastic Maniplator

An industrial robot, installed real manufacturing processes an element of the system autmation, can be considered as an uncertain system due to dynamic uncertainties in inertial parameters and varying payloads. Most difficuties in controlling a robot manipulator are caused by the fact that the dynamic equations describing the motions of the manipulator are inherently nonlinear and heavily coupled effects between joints and associated links. Existing robot conrol systems have constant predefined gains and do not cover the complex dynamic interactions between manipulator joints. As a result, the manipulator is severly limited in range of application, speed of operation and variation of payload. The proposed controller is operated by adjusting its gains based on the response of the manipulator in such a way that the manipulator closely matches the reference model trajectories defined by the desinger. The proposed manipulator studied has two loops, an inner loop of model reference adaptive controller and an outer loop of state feedback controller with integral action to guarantee the stability of the adaptive scheme. This adaptation algorithm is based on the hyperstailiy approach with an improved Lyapunov function. The coupling among joints and the nonlinearity in the dynamic equation are explicitly considered. The designed manipulator controller shows good tracking performance in practical working environment, various load variations and parameter uncertainties.
Finite Element Analysis of Two-Dimensional Cold Forging By Using Modular Remeshing and Expert System

A systematic method of remeshing is required due to severe mesh distortion after some finite deformation in the finite element analysis of practical forging processes. In order to cope with the problem of mesh degeneracy during deformation, the proper design of meshes plays an improtant role in the analysis. In so-called "Modular Remeshing", the physical characteristics of metal flow and geometric characteristics are incorporated in "Module", which can be applied to the mesh design for a certain mode of deformation in so far as the topology of deforming region remains the same. For the purpose of more effective and systematic use of the modular remeshing scheme, an expert system has been developed in the framework of the proposed remeshing schemel. In oredr to show the effectiveness of the method, the rib-web type forging with axial relief or radial relief and spike forging are simulated. It has been thus shown that the proposed method of automatic remeshing by using modular remeshing and expert system can be futher extended and applied to various forging problems with complicated geometrical configurations.ical configurations.
On the stabilization design of gunner primary sight

The heavy vibrations of vehicles on the severe off-road environment degenerate the stabilization proformance of the gunner primary sight. To improve the stabilization performance, the dynamic equations of the gunner primary sight were derived, and the stabilization systems were designed using VSC methods. The performances were compared with the Lead/Lag scheme. In the nonlinear simulation including real disturb ances and couloumb friction, it is shown that the VSC methods exhibit more effective stabilization.
Analysis of Joining Strength in Electromagnetic Joining of Metals to High Toughness Polymers

Electromgnetic joining of aluminum alloy tubes to high toughness polyurethane rubber cores is studied in order to estimate the joining strength and to analyze the effect of the process variables. The equation which can estimate the joining strength is proposed under considering the elastic recovery of the polyurethane core and the radial shrinkage of the core by pulling it axially. The obtained results are as follows : 1) The joining strength is mainly dependent on the magnitude of residual elastic strain of the polyurethane core. 2) The radial shrinkage (residual strain reduction) of the core during the axial pulling causes the joining strength to decrease severely. The equation for the reduced axial strength is proposed and it is found that the estimated values agree well with experimental results. 3) The magnitude of radial shrinkage could be reduced for the smaller value of ratio l/r. 4) The joining strength in metal/polymer joining increases as the friction coefficient increases. But its effect of friction coefficient is insignificant in comparison with the case of metal/metal joining.
A Study on In-Process Detection of Chatter Vibration in a Turning Process

There have been many studies on chatter vibration in machining but there seems to be no regulations to decide the commencing point of chatter objectively. The development of an objective method which can estimate and detect chatter commencement is very much in need for automatic manufacturing systems, dynamic performance tests for machine tools, and so on. In this study, an approach for in-process monitoring and for deciding commencing point of the chatter vibration using the frequency band-energy method was proposed. From this method, in-process monitoring system for detection the chatter vibration was developed, and investigated its practical possibility. As a result, it is shown by experiments that the chatter vibtation can be detected accurately. Since the changing pattern of the signal energy in certain frequency band during chattering is seldom affected by the variation of cutting conditions, if adequate pre-measures are taken, this method can be widely used in most machining processes.
A Domain-Partition Algorithm for the Large-Scale TSP

In this paper an approximate solution method for the large-scale Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) is presented. The method starts with the subdivision of the problem domain into a number of cluster by considering their geometric characteristic. Each cluster has a limited number of nodes so as to get a local solution. They are linked go give the least pathe which covers the whole domain and become TSPs solution with start-and end-node. The approximate local solution in each cluster are obtained based on geometrical properties of the cluster, and combined to give an overall approximate solution for the larte-scale TSP.

Development of High Speed Machine Tool Spindle Regarding Vibration Characteristics

A method for designing high speed spindle is presented in order to enhance the machining accuracy in consideration of vibration characteristics. Experimetal evaluations of the spindle HS 430 as a prototype are made efficiently with the help of bending vibration modes for nonrotational and rotationalstate comparing with the commercial spindle V430. As a result the spindle of HS 430 shows the superior performance than that of V 430.
A Study on Perturbation Effect and Orbit Determination of Communication Satellite

This study concerns about the orbit prediction and orbit determination of Korean future communication satellite, called 'Moogunghwa", which will be motioned in the geo-stationary orbit. Perturbation effect on the satellite orbit due to nonspherical gravitation of the earth, gravitation of the sun and moon, radiation of sun, drag of the atmosphere was investigated. Cowell's method is used for orbit prediction. Orbit determination was performed by using Extended Kalman Filter which is suitable for real-time orbit determination. The result shows that the chacteristics of the satellite orbit has east-west and south-north drift. So the periodic control time and control value in the view of the periodic of error can be provided. The orbit determination demonstrated the effectiveness since the convergence performance on the positon and velocity error, and state error standard deviation is reasonable.able.
