Influence of Sustaining Frequency on the luminous Efficiency in AC-PDP
Journal of the Korean Institute of Illuminating and Electrical Installation Engineers, volume 14, issue 6, 2000, Pages 1~5
Recently alternating-current Plasma Display Panel(AC-PDP) is in the spotlight as a digital television and high definition television. The panel structure widely adapted in commercial AC-PDP is three electrodes surface discharge type. At present time, the luminous efficiency is around 1lm/W, it should be a key factor for the commercialization. For the high luminous efficiency, the development of panel structure is necessary. At a given panel structure, a driving method should be optimized to get a sufficient luminous efficiency. The display image of AC-PDP could be realized by the repeated light emission from the discharge. Because most of discharge power is consumed in the sustaining period, the optimization of sustaining waveform is very important for the high luminous efficiency. ADS (Address and Display period Separated) driving method is commonly used. The average driving frequency of ADS driving method is ranged by several tens kilo of [kHz], however the actual frequency of sustaining period is in range of 100[kHz] to 200[kHz]. Based on this study, when the phosphor emits the visible light, it has a decay time of few milliseconds due to the material transfer to the phosphor to emit the visible light. Consequently the luminous efficiency decreases in proportion to the driving frequency. It is found that the luminous efficiency could be significantly improved by the low frequency sustaining driving method.

Design of High Frequency Inverter with Series-parallel Load-Resonant for Induction Heating application
Journal of the Korean Institute of Illuminating and Electrical Installation Engineers, volume 14, issue 6, 2000, Pages 12~17
IN induction heating system the high frequency operation allows a rapid response to current fluctuation in the inverter and result in improved welding quality. To work induction heating of nonferrous metals, a welding power supply is need high working frequency and high power. This paper is shown design technique for increasing working frequency in induction heating for welding coppers. A series-parallel resonate inverter consists of H-type bridges, each of whose arms is composed of a combination of two parallel IGBTs. Inverter operating with the fixed frequency is controlled by pulse width modulation (PWM). As switching adapted the Zero-Voltage Switching technique to reduce switching losses the system is high efficiency. The propose inverter has feature which is high efficiency for very wide load variations with a narrow range of duty cycle ratio control and load short circuit capability. Detailed experimental results obtained from a 48[V] output, 500[W] experimental inverter are presented to verify the concept.

The proposed panel board include a transient voltage blocking device and a EMI filter which consisted of varistors, capacitors, and bus line inductance.A performance test of the prototype panel board, blocking characteristics to transient voltages and reduction characteristics to power line noise, are carried out by using a combination surge generator standardized in IEC and a network analyzer. The results showed that the proposed panel board is satisfied with the surge immunity level of IEC 61000-4-5, and has an over 20[dB] noise reduction performance in ranges from 150[kHz]∼30[MHz].
Mechanical Deterioration of Overhead Transmission Lines by Forest Fires
Journal of the Korean Institute of Illuminating and Electrical Installation Engineers, volume 14, issue 6, 2000, Pages 26~34
The considerations for remaining life of ACSR (Aluminum Stranded Conductors Steel Reinforced) in transmission lines have become gradually important to hold reliability and stability of power supply. The remaining life of ACSR exposed to the atmosphere for a long period may rely on deterioration caused by environmental indices such as atmospheric corrosion, galvanic corrosion, crevice corrosion and fatigue corrosion. One of reduction of useful life in overhead transmission lines built on the ridge of mountain is often caused by forest fires. This paper deals with investigation of strength deterioration performance of ASCR due to fires through several testing and analyzing data for tension load and extension of blazed ACSR. Test samples are ACSR 480[
] conductors, which are artificially fired to regular durations. Mechanical properties such as tension load and extension for fired ACSR conductors are tested and estimation functions for mechanical performances corresponding to fire duration are determined. As a result, it can be verified that both tension load and extension of ACSR are reduced by increasing fire duration. Hence, it is obvious that ACSR due to forest fires may lead to mechanical deterioration.
Diagnosis of Insulation Deterioration in Cast-Resin Power Transformer using Acoustic Emission Techniques
Journal of the Korean Institute of Illuminating and Electrical Installation Engineers, volume 14, issue 6, 2000, Pages 35~42
In this paper, AE(Acoustic Emission) signals detected from the growth of the electrical tree in an epoxy resin under ac high-voltage application were analysed to diagnose the insulation deterioration of cast-resin power transformer. Frequency spectra of AE signals generated from the magnetizing and the load currents in the actual operating cast-resin power transformer of 500[kVA] under distribution system of 22.9[kV] were also analysed to distinguish the AE signals due to void discharges from the magnetic circuit noises in the core of the transformer. As the experimental results, we could distinguish the AE signals whether those signals were caused due to the void discharges or due to the magnetic circuit noises by analyzing the frequency spectrum of AE signals. The frequency spectra of AE signals generated from the cast-resin power transformer in operation due to both the magnetizing and the load currents appeared in the range of 40-120[kHz], but the frequency band of AE signals emitted from the void discharges in an epoxy resin sample was about 50[kHz] to 230[kHz].
Development of Deterioration Diagnosis System for Aged ACSR-OC Conductors in HV Overhead Distribution Lines
Journal of the Korean Institute of Illuminating and Electrical Installation Engineers, volume 14, issue 6, 2000, Pages 43~50
Design and experiments of a nondestructive testing system with a solenoid eddy current sensor to inspect deterioration of ASCR-OC (ACSR Outdoor Cross-linked Polyethylene Insulated Wires) usually used in HV overhead distribution lines in domestic areas in presented in this paper. Through corrosion mechanisms and deterioration results for ACSR-OC conductors are examined, it is shown that corrosion may lead to the reduction of the effective cross section area of conductors is proposed. The measurement system consisting of a constant current source with a RF frequency, a signal processing unit and a motor driver/ controller is designed and implemented. This instrument has such capabilities as detecting the sensor output and estimating diameter change of the testing conductors, continuously. As a result, it was verified that such corrosion detector system with an eddy current sensor can be shown good effectiveness for estimating the serious faults due to deterioration in overhead distribution lines and giving an early warming before severe aged conductor may lead to fail.

A mathematical model of describing oxygen density's variation in multi-band type reheating furnaces
Journal of the Korean Institute of Illuminating and Electrical Installation Engineers, volume 14, issue 6, 2000, Pages 58~68
In this paper, a mathematical model of describing oxygen density in multi-band type reheating furnaces was presented. Model designed in this paper was composed of majorly two parts. One is a model regarding 'variation of existing gas'. The other is a model of showing 'variation of oxygen content'. Each model is designed by considering four factors related to variation of oxygen density based on chemical reaction, fluid dynamics and fuzzy theory. Four factors to be considered are combustion reaction in burner, fluid transfer between adjacent combustion bands, fluid transfer from furnace's inner space to external space, and input of external air via gates. According to simulation results, it was shown that varying pattern of oxygen density in each combustion band is similar to generally expected operation data in reheating furnace.
Effects of the Current Probe on Ground Resistance Measurements Using Fall-of-Potential Method
Journal of the Korean Institute of Illuminating and Electrical Installation Engineers, volume 14, issue 6, 2000, Pages 69~77
In this paper, the effects of the positions of the potential and current probes on the measurements of the ground resistance and potential gradients with the fall-of-potential method are described and the testing techniques to minimize the measuring errors are proposed. The fall-of-potential method is theoretically based on the potential and current measuring principle and the measuring error is primarily caused by the position and ground resistance of the measuring probes. The ground resistance is calculated by applying the 61.8% and rule in the fall-of-potential method, and then the potential probe is located on the straight line between the grounding electrode to be measured and the current probe. However, sometimes the grounding electrode to be measured and the measuring probes in on-site test might not be arranged on the straight line with adequate distance because there are building, road block, construction and other establishments. Provided that the grounding electrode to be measured and the measuring probes ar out of position on the straight line or have inadequate distance, the measurement of the ground resistance classically falls into an error and the measured ground resistance should be corrected. Measurements were focused on the grounding electrode system made by the ground rods of 2.4m long. It was found that the suitable separation between the grounding electrode to be measured and the current probe is more than 5 times of the length of the grounding electrode to be measured.
A Study on the Predictive Diagnosis of the Cable Joint Using Ultrasonic Technique
Journal of the Korean Institute of Illuminating and Electrical Installation Engineers, volume 14, issue 6, 2000, Pages 78~84
In this paper, the diagnosis technique was proposed by measuring and analyzing ultrasonic signals caused by partial discharge on the interface of cable joint. The measured ultrasonic signal was filtered by wavelet transform, and then the dominant signal of filtered signal was analyzed by fast fourier transform(FFT). As a result, it was confirmed that different characteristics were obtained with the moisture and the metal powder on the interface of cable joint and with voltage increment.

A Study on the Diversity Factor of Elevators in Apartment Housing
Journal of the Korean Institute of Illuminating and Electrical Installation Engineers, volume 14, issue 6, 2000, Pages 93~97
This paper established the demand factor of elevator. For this purpose, it was analysed the operating pattern of elevator into power supply facility installed in the apartment. As a result, it is found that the simultaneous driving-rate of elevator peaked at September in a year and the average operation of 1 day recorded the 800 counts. Also, the peak-value of simultaneous driving-rate investigated about 40∼45%. Therefore, it was analysed that the demand factor of elevator are smaller than 10% by standard data.
