A Large Sky Simulator : A Reproduction of CIE Sky Condition and Daylighting Evaluation using Scale Model

KH University has developed a large sky simulator which is its scale suits international standard. To verify the reliability of the sky simulator, the luminance of 36 points on the inner sky surface was measured and compared with the CIE standard overcast sky model. It was found that the sky simulator can reproduce the CIE standard overcast sky condition with 1.8[%] of mean difference. To identify the differences of daylighting performance, scale model measurements were taken under a real sky and in a sky simulator. Under overcast sky conditions, two kinds of scale model experiments were conducted by using the photometric sensor Li-cor. Firstly, a 1/20 scale model of a side-lit office room 4.9[m] wide, 7.2[m] long, and 2.6[m] high was created. Five measurement points were set at 1.2[m], 2.4[m], 3.6[m], 4.8[m], and 6.0[m] from the window. The mean difference of the light factor between the sky simulator and real sky was 7.1[%]. Secondly, a 1/30 scale model of a top-lit atrium 15[m] wide, 15[m] long, and 15[m] high was created. The measurement point was set at center of the room and the well indexes of the model were set in 5 types. The mean difference of the light factor between the sky simulator and real sky was 1.7[%]. This proved that the sky simulator is fully accurate and usable for daylighting research.
Tracking Object Movement via Two Stage Median Operation and State Transition Diagram under Various Light Conditions

A moving object detection algorithm for surveillance video is here proposed which employs background initialization based on two-stage median filtering and a background updating method based on state transition diagram. In the background initialization, the spatiotemporal similarity is measured in the subinterval. From the accumulated difference between the base frame and the other frames in a subinterval, the regions affected by moving objects are located. The median is applied over the subsequence in the subinterval in which regions share similarity. The outputs from each subinterval are filtered by a two-stage median filter. The background of every frame is updated by the suggested state transition diagram The object is detected by the difference between the current frame and the updated background. The proposed method showed good results even for busy, crowded sequences which included moving objects from the first frame.
Zero Voltage Switching Boost H-Bridge AC Power Converter for Induction Heating Cooker

This paper presents a novel soft-switching PWM utility frequency AC to high frequency AC power conversion circuit incorporating boost H-bridge inverter topology, which is more suitable and acceptable for cost effective consumer induction heating applications. The operating principle and the operation modes are presented using the switch mode equivalent circuits and the operating voltage and current waveforms. The performances of this high-frequency inverter using the latest IGBTs are illustrated, which includes high frequency power regulation and actual efficiency characteristics based on zero voltage soft-switching(ZVS) operation ranges, and the power dissipation as compared with those of the conventional type high frequency inverter. In addition, a dual mode control scheme of this high frequency inverter based on asymmetrical pulse width modulation(PWM) and pulse density modulation(PDM) control scheme is discussed in this paper in order to extend the soft switching operation ranges and to improve the power conversion efficiency at the low power settings. The power converter practical effectiveness is substantially proved based on experimental results from practical design example.

This study researched the mutual relationship between elevator emergencies(sudden stops, entrapment) and power quality such as voltage interruptions or sags. To analyze the power quality at the elevator switchboard of an apartment, the on-line power quality(sag, swell, and interruption, etc.) were measured and error messages(under voltage error, etc.) in the elevator control room were researched. Also the performance and susceptibility for stops were evaluated and stated through the testing of three pieces of simulated test equipment with an EN12016(2004) standard setting and the magnitude and duration data of the measured sag or interruption. This paper will use these data in the analysis of the mutual relationship between power quality and elevator emergencies.

Electric power is an important element in any modern economy. The availability of a reliable power supply at a reasonable cost is important for the economic growth and development of a country. Electric power utilities throughout the world therefore strive to meet customer demands economically with high quality and reliability. As the power industry moves towards open competition, therefore, there has been a call for a methodology by which to evaluate power system reliability through the use of customer interruption characteristics. This paper presents the results of an investigation and analysis of interruption characteristics of an industrial customer in Korea. This study used a direct visit survey to determine the investigation and analysis of electric service quality and the characteristics of industrial customers in Korea. A customer survey conducted throughout Korea via personal interviews of 660 sample customers is presented here. Variation according to characteristics of interruption such as duration, time of day, frequency and day of interruption was also investigated
Grounding Characteristic Analysis of Plate Electrodes

In this study, an experiment on the efficient construction method of plate electrodes, the influence of electric potential interference in plate electrodes, and building foundations were explored. The experimental result of the electric potential measurement was taken on the basis of the direction of movement and the condition in which the plate electrodes are laid underground in building foundations. It shows that the construction method of laying the plate electrodes vertically exhibits a more efficient reduction of electric potential in a diagonal direction and on an X axis than laying plates horizontally. For plate electrode construction in an area that has uniform conditions, the parallel joint construction method is more effective than a single construction to reduce earth electrical potential and ground resistance. In addition, a straight arrangement performs well in ground efficiency, compared to the parallel arrangement.
Low price Fuel Cell Inverter System for 3[KW] Residential Power

This study proposed a high efficiency DC-DC converter with a new current doubler rectifier for fuel-cell systems for use with the Nexa(310-0027) PEMFC from the Ballard Co. The proposed high efficiency DC-DC converter for the fuel-cell system generated ZVS by applying partial resonance and using a phase shift PWM control method. Constantly switching frequency, loss of switching, peak current, and peak voltage were reduced by this system. In addition to this system, two inductors were attached to a rectifier circuit allowing it to be able to provide the direct current(DC) and DC voltage safely to a load with reduced ripple components. Also, by using the newly proposed current doubler rectifier, the high frequency DC-DC converter for the fuel cell system was capable of reaching a highest efficiency of 92[%] as compared to 88.3[%] efficiency in previous results, which means that efficiency increased 3.7[%]. The overall results were confirmed by a simulation and laboratory experiment.
Distribution of Potential Rise as a Function of Shape of Grounding Electrodes

In order to analyze the potential rise of grounding systems installed in buildings, a hemispherical grounding simulation system was studied. Potential rise was measured and analyzed regarding the shape and distance of the grounding electrodes by using this system. The system was composed of a hemispherical water tank, AC power supply, a movable potentiometer, and test grounding electrodes. The potential rise was measured in real time by the horizontal moving probe of be potentiometer. The test grounding electrodes were fabricated through reducing the grounding electrode installed in real buildings such as the ground rod, grounding grid and so on. The potential rise was displayed in a two-dimensional profile and was analyzed regarding the shapes of the ground electrodes. The potential rise of the grounding grid combined with a ground rod was the lowest of every grounding electrode tested. The proposed results can be applicable to evaluating ground potential rise in grounding systems, and the analytical data can be used to stabilize the electrical installations and prevent electrical disasters.
Characteristics of Optical Current Sensors by Sensor Design

This paper will suggest that the 1 cross orthogonal loop type sensor improves on the orthogonal loop form sensor-head, which is available a calibration of the linear birefringence, when a fiber optic current sensor was composed. An output characteristics of the 1 cross orthogonal loop form, a general closed loop form, the orthogonal loop form are compared by the IEC(International Electrotechnical Commission) 60044-8 standard, and the state of polarization is compared with three forms. As a result, when the closed loop form was changed to the orthogonal loop form, retardation decreased 15.3[%]. When the closed loop form was changed to the 1 cross orthogonal loop type, the retardation decreased 33.8[%]. As a result of the Faraday Effect measurement, the 1 cross orthogonal loop form has the highest output characteristic and the lowest error ratio. It met the 0.5 class of the IEC 60044-8 standard. Thus, in application of the 1cross orthogonal loop form, the possibility to develop high reliability fiber optic current sensors that have a high output and stable error ratio rises is increased.
A Study on the Effective Utilization Plan through Field Investigation and Analysis with Power Transformers in Domestic Areas

Korea is highly dependent on foreign countries for energy while at the same time having a high energy-consumption industrial structure. Therefore, logical improvements in energy use efficiency and nationwide energy saving are becoming more and more important in coping with the worldwidehigh oil prices and environmental issues such as listed in the Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Consequently, a study was conducted on the average annual load factor in domestic areas to set a reasonable and reliable technology standard plan for high-efficiency transformers. The average annual load factor in Korea was discovered to be 18.4[%] classified by industry. This factor is expected to be used in arranging a domestic standard for a minimum efficiency system for transformers, and in reviewing and supplementing the standard transformers plan for the High Energy-Efficiency Appliance Certification. The expected effect from the establishment of the technology standards plan for highly efficient transformers is the expansion of the manufacturing and distribution of highly efficient transformers that are suitable for domestic use. These will lead to electricity cost savings for users, strengthening the related industries' market competitive powers and the effective reduction of greenhouse gases on a national level by drastically reducing loss from transformers, which accounts for a large portion of the total electric supply losses.
A Study on High Resolution Ranging Algorithm for The UWB Indoor Channel

In this paper, we present a novel and numerically efficient algorithm for high resolution TOA(Time Of Arrival) estimation under indoor radio propagation channels. The proposed algorithm is not dependent on the structure of receivers, i.e, it can be used with either coherent or non-coherent receivers. The TOA estimation algorithm is based on a high resolution frequency estimation algorithm of Minimum-norm. The efficiency of the proposed algorithm relies on numerical analysis techniques in computing signal or noise subspaces. The algorithm is based on the two step procedures, one for transforming input data to frequency domain data and the other for estimating the unknown TOA using the proposed efficient algorithm. The efficiency in number of operations over other algorithms is presented. The performance of the proposed algorithm is investigated by means of computer simulations.. Throughout the analytic and computer simulation results, we show that the proposed algorithm exhibits superior performance in estimating TOA estimation with limited computational cost.
Call Admission Control in Wireless Ad-hoc Networks with Multiple Channels and Radios

In this paper, an Ad-hoc Routing Protocol that works in wireless Ad-hoc communication networks with multiple radios and multiple channels and that controls call admission based on bandwidth measurement is proposed. Unlike the conventional Ad-hoc node with a single radio using a single channel, an Ad-hoc node of the protocol proposed, the MCQosR(Multiple Channel Quality of Service Routing), has multiple radios and uses multiple channels, which allows full duplex transmission between wireless Ad-hoc nodes, and reduces intra interference on the route. Also, a fixed channel only for reception at each node enables the estimation of the available bandwidth, which is used to control the call admission for QoS provision. The performance of the MCQosR was verified by simulation.

A Study of I/O Serial Communication Systems Between Overground And Overhead Controllers

This paper represents the Input/Output (I/O) serial communication methods between overground and overhead controllers using a programmable logic controller (PLC). In general, the systems composed by overground and overhead controllers use exclusive serial communication units. This, however, has a demerit such as a high cost as well as some restrictions of the system itself. Thus, this paper suggests methods by I/O cards for data communication between overground and overhead controllers. In this system, there is no special card and it therefore has a lower cost and is more flexible than the exclusive serial communication unit.
