An Analysis of Daylighting Performance of Light Shelf in Office Building

The purpose of this study is to present the design guideline for an effective application of light shelf in office building. For this, the computer simulation using Daylighting System of 3Ds Studio Max was performed, and the optimal values related to design factors such as a depth, a surface reflectance and a installation angle of light shelf were obtained. Then daylighting performance of light shelf using the optimal values was analyzed, and the simulation results show that the installation of the optimal light shelf can improve a indoor lighting environment in office building.
A Study on the Power Factor Correction and Harmonics Reduction of Capacitor Banks installed at Customers

Most power system loads and delivery apparatus are inductive in nature and therefore operate at a lagging power factor. Applying capacitor banks to a customer will result in a power factor correction and other benefits such as VAR support, increased voltage, reduced power losses, and reduced billing charges. Also there can be power quality problems as a result of adding capacitor banks. The most common are harmonics. This paper provides an in depth analysis on the power factor correction and harmonics reduction of capacitor bank installed at a customer. The EDSA program was used as a simulation tool for the case study.
Simulation for Characteristics Analysis of Grid-connected Wind Power Generation System on MATLAB/Simulink

The paper presents a modeling of the grid-connected wind turbine generation system on MATLAB/Simulink and aims to perform simulations for analysis of the system's characteristics. It performs a pitch regulation for control of the wind generator's output with respect to wind speed variation, and presents a relationship between interconnecting transformer's connections and fault current by reviewing the variations of fault current according to transformer connections in a grid-connected wind power generation system. It also investigates the effect of grounding methods of the interconnecting transformer's neutral point on fault current variations. The simulation results show the differences of fault currents, voltages and generator's characteristics for a line-to-ground fault according to interconnecting transformer's four different connections, and the differences of fault currents of the system according to grounding methods of the transformer neutral point. Therefore, the case studies demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed simulation model on Simulink.
Analysis on Simulation and Experiment for Fault Current Limiting Characteristics of SFCL using Magnetic Coupling of Two Coils with Series Connection

The simulation and experiment for the fault current limiting characteristics of the superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) using the magnetic coupling of series connected two coils were performed. The magnetic fluxes generated from two coils were canceled out during a normal time. However, the resistance generation of high-Tc superconducting (HTSC) element after a fault occurrence allows the magnetic fluxes of two coils and contributes to the fault current limiting operation. Through the computer simulation and the current limiting experiment for this SFCL, the operational current and the limiting impedance of the SFCL could be confirmed to be improved by adjusting the inductance ratio of two coils.
Automatic Control System for the Stringing Transmission Wire by the Measured Tension

As transmission line is installed by manual operation, it is necessary to scheme the automatic system for stringing transmission wire. For this necessity, the objective of this paper is developed automatic control system for a stringing of transmission wire. In this paper, transmission wire with suspended pattern and ac servo motor for torque generating are modeled. On the basis of wire model, algorithms to determine the reference tension is presented, so as the dip of transmission wire is keep constancy. The control scheme is proposed by the ac servo motor for torque generation and a load cell for a detected tension of transmission wire and implemented. We experimentally show that the performance of the tension response is satisfactory. And also proposed scheme verified the utilities for tension control of transmission wire.
A Comparative Study on the Electric Power Efficiency of IDCs with AC and DC Distribution Systems

Internet Data Centers (IDCs), which are resulted by the rapid progress of Information Technology industry, consist of high-density digital loads with internet server systems. Introduction of DC distribution system may simplify the conventional electric power conversion system, and may result in the improvement of electric power efficiency. However, this conjecture has never been tested under Korean IDC environment. In this study, electric power efficiency of DC distribution system from KT Namsuwon IDC is contrasted with that of conventional AC distribution system from KT Bundang IDC. DC 48[V] based distribution system showed 13.2[%] higher efficiency than the conventional AC based distribution system. The further analysis with the assumption of DC 380[V] suggests efficiency improvement over 25[%] can be achieved.
Soft-Start Open Circuit Voltage and Constant Current Sequence Control of 2.5[kW] HID Search Lamp for Ship

HID(High Intensity Discharge) search lamp for shipment requires a high open circuit and output current compare than vehicle. This paper presents a soft-start open circuit voltage and constant current sequence control method for 2.5[kW] HID search lamp. The proposed method controls the opal circuit voltage and discharge current of HID lamp according to ignition signal with a simple 8-bit micro-processor and PWM device. For the stable control of lamp, micro-processor checks the output voltage and current. And the checked signals are compared with ignition signal and changes the control mode for stable operation. An ignition signal and micro-processor change the control mode from open circuit voltage contort to constant current control. The proposed control scheme is verified from experimental tests of 2.5[kW] HID search lamp for shipment.

Ths paper describes the Dual-band switch which was proposed new structure that could improved the specification of broadband and designed by the optimized structure through simulation. The Dual-band switch with 2.4[GHz]/5.8[GHz] that can apply to 802.11a/b/g system that is commercialized present was studied to get a new structure with higher power, high isolation. The transmitter of switch was designed to operate a parallel switching element with stack structure of two FET. The receiver designed to have asymmetry structure that insert series FET in addition to basic serial/parallel FET. SPDT(Single Pole Double Throw) Tx/Rx FET switch is a device that can do switching from a port of input to two port of output. The fabricated SPDT switch has the characteristic of insertion loss of a below -3[dB] form DC to 6[GHz] and the isolation of a below -30D[dB](Rx mode).
Study on IEC 61850 Performance Testing Procedures of BF Protection IED

Korea Electric Power Research Institute in charge of the power IT project "Development of Prototype for Advanced Substation Automation System based on the Digital Control Technology" is performing system verification. Breaker Failure protection IED can operate protection activity by communicating with other IEDs such as T/L IED, owing to IEC 61850 international standard and digital substation automation system. Accordingly, IED testing process should be changed from the conventional way by electrical contact test on individual IED to system based testing method by network communication. This paper describes how to test BF IED based on substation automation system and testing procedures using UML, which is used to implement S/W design.
Discharge Characteristics between Needle and Plane Electrodes in Water under Impulse Voltages

In this paper we describe discharge characteristics between needle-to-plane electrodes in water in various conditions such as different impulse voltages, polarities and water resistivities. Streamer corona is initiated at the tip of needle electrode and propagates toward plane electrode, and it experiences the final jump across the test gap. The branched channels of streamer coronas for lower water resistivities are much thicker and brighter than those for higher water resistivities at the same level of applied voltage. The negative streamer coronas not only have more branches but also widely spread out compared to the positive streamer coronas. A number of pulse-like currents ranging from some hundreds mA to a few A after streamer corona onset were produced with discharge developments. The time-lags-to breakdown for the positive polarity were remarkably shorter than those for the negative polarity. The pre-breakdown energy supplied into the test gap was inversely proportional to water resistivity.
A Study on the Characteristics of Hybrid-Plasma Torch for Dyeing Wastewater Treatment

Water treatment study employing plasma is thoroughly examined in the following paper. The research using water plasma torch showed superior results in terms of economical and energy efficiency due to the substantial reduction of electric power. A comparison of streamer and arc discharge phenomena taken place in water was put under close scrutiny. Dyeing wastewater exposed to the plasma treatment was sampled and analyzed for relative dissolved ozone concentration, hydrogen peroxide, as well as the color removal efficiency. It was found that streamer discharges is more effective than arc discharge in growth of
by plasma chemical constituents, though plasma torch had small oxidation reagents selectivity. Thus, streamer discharges, due to the efficient plasma-chemical reactions environment, proved to be more efficient compare to the thermal arc plasma loading.
A Study on the Effect of Bridge's Characteristics on Tracking Phenomena

This paper describes the influence of the bridge formed between electrodes by electrolyte for tracking process. Electrolytes is made by IEC(International Electrotechnical Commission) 60589, NaCl added to deionized water as each 1, 3, 5[wt%]. The used test equipment is made according to KS(Korean Industrial Standard) C IEC 00112. It is investigated voltage, current, value of resistance and thermal image when bridge formed between electrodes on tracking process. As a result, as conductivity of electrolyte gets bigger as Joule's heat on bridge also gets bigger. But It is not over electrolyte's boiling point due to evaporation heat of electrolyte. However as conductivity of electrolyte gets bigger as the necessary time of dry band gets shorter. So dry band is existed more long time between ahead of droplet to next droplet and discharge chance at dry band gets much. Therefore tracking process gets faster.
A Study on the Actual Operating Conditions of Guard Lamps and its Maintenance Problems

This paper describes the checking results and some problems of guard lamps installed in the field. The guard lamp providing night security for people is installed outdoors and exposed to the natural factors causing secular ageing and the people's vandalism, etc., thus it is prone to get troubles in function. In fact, the guard lamps has been left without considering the fundamental measures in the legislative system in spite of the loss of lives due to the electric shock accidents repetitively taking place every year. This study arouses people's attention to the risk due to the lack of management and maintenance of the guard lamp by investigating the recent technology and the actual operating conditions and some problems and countermeasures were ultimately deduced. In this process, we reflected on the various opinions through fieldwork and had a couple of consultations with field staffs, manufacturers concerned and active officers with local autonomous entities.
A Study on an Algorithm Based on Sensitivity Method for Alleviating Overloads in Power Networks

In this paper, a new algorithm based on sensitivity method for alleviating overloads in power networks is presented to find the switching branches effectively. By applying the new sensitivity of the line flow with respect to the change of the branch impedance, both on and off switchings for alleviating overloads in power networks are performed systematically at once and an effective scheme for drawing up a plan to alleviate overloads of the lines is presented through screening a large number of line switching cases easily. The ranking of switching branches is calculated according to the new switching algorithm based on sensitivity method and the switching of the ranked branches is performed in the order of ranking until overloads are eliminated. In order to show the effects of this algorithm, it is applied to a small scale power system of IEEE 39-bus test system.

Accurate sets of electron collision cross sections and the electron transport coefficients for atoms and molecules are necessary for quantitative understanding of plasma phenomena Kr and Xe atom are used in many industrial applications, such as in PDP and fluorescent induction lamps(FILs). Make-up of Equivalent Circuit of Grounding System using Water Resistivity in Hemispherical Electrode System

A design criterion of grounding systems is commonly based on the ground resistance measured with low frequency in Korea. When lightning surges which have high frequency components are injected into the grounding system, the grounding impedance is great]y different from the static grounding resistance. In order to investigate the effect of water resistivity on the high frequency performance of grounding systems, this paper presents the frequency-dependent admittance using water tank simulating the grounding system in different water resistivities. As a result, because of capacitive effect admittances and conductance are increased with increasing frequency in higher water resistivity of greater than 500[
]. On the other hand, admittances and conductances are decreased with increasing frequency due to inductive effect in lower water resistivity of less than 500[
]. The phase difference between the current and voltage increases in the range of 200[kHz] to 5[MHz]. Consequently, frequency-dependent performance of grounding systems is closely related to the soil resistivity, it is necessary to consider the effect of grounding system performance on the frequency and soil resistivity.
