Polarization-Diversity-Loop-Configuration-Based Fiber Filter Realizing Inline Conversion Between Transmission and Reflection Spectra of Fiber Bragg Grating

By incorporating a polarization-diversity loop configuration (PDLC), we have demonstrated inline conversion between transmission and reflection spectra of a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) without reconfiguration of the fiber filter structure. The proposed apparatus consists of a polarization beam splitter, an FBG, and two quarter-wave plates (QWP's). The inline conversion operation between transmission and reflection spectra of the FBG was performed by proper adjustment of QWP's within the proposed filter. The band rejection ratio and side-mode suppression ratio in transmission and reflection modes of the fabricated filter were measured as ~17.0[dB] and ~16.4[dB], respectively.
Design of New LED Operation Drive Using Compensating Circuit for Transformed Voltage

Currently high power Light Emitting Diode (LED) is in the limelight due to its characteristics of long durability, low maintenance costs, and high efficiency. Furthermore, it does not emit pollutants or poisonous gases and is a light source not using mercury, so it holds a high status in eco-friendly terms as well. In this paper, we studied a two-stage LED power drive circuit that can compensate only voltage regulation through LED output current, in order to improve efficiency of LED drive with constant current control in accordance with changes in temperature. The proposed LED drive has an advantage of reducing LED drive's voltage losses by controlling only voltage change of input power, compared with an existing circuit which controls input voltage. The suggested non-insulation compensating circuit for voltage change was verified to have improved efficiency relative to a LED drive using existing DC/DC converter.
A Surge Voltage Distribution Analysis of 2MVA Cast Resin Transformer Winding with FEM Simulation

This paper presents an analyzing method of the capacitance of the power transformer for initial voltage distribution and insulation design. When a high incoming surge voltage is accidently occurred in windings of transformer, it does not distribute equally in the windings. This phenomenon makes electric field concentration and the insulating material could be break. Initial voltage distribute mostly depends on capacitances between winding to winding or winding to core in the transformer. If the C network can be structuralized into the equivalent circuit model and be calculated each capacitance element value by circuit analysis and FEM(Finite Element Method) simulation program, the transformer designer could know the place where the structure is to be modified or the insulation to be reinforced. This method quickly provides the data of the voltage distribution in each winding to the designer.
Hybrid Fuzzy Controller for DTC of Induction Motor Drive

An induction motor operated with a conventional direct self controller(DSC) shows a sluggish response during startup and under changes of torque command. Fuzzy logic controller(FLC) is used in conjection with DSC to minimize these problems. A FLC chooses the switching states based on a set of fuzzy variables. Flux position, error in flux magnitude and error in torque are used as fuzzy state variables. Fuzzy rules are determinated by observing the vector diagram of flux and currents. This paper proposes hybrid fuzzy controller for direct torque control(DTC) of induction motor drives. The speed controller is based on adaptive fuzzy learning controller(AFLC), which provide high dynamics performances both in transient and steady state response. Flux position, error in flux magnitude and error in torque are used as FLC state variables. The speed is estimated with model reference adaptive system(MRAS) based on artificial neural network(ANN) trained on-line by a back-propagation algorithm. This paper is controlled speed using hybrid fuzzy controller(HFC) and estimation of speed using ANN. The performance of the proposed induction motor drive with HFC controller and ANN is verified by analysis results at various operation conditions.
Cost Reduction through Shortest Path Connection of Electric Power Line

The shorter the electric power line is, the less its cost becomes. In this paper, the Steiner tree is applied to find the shortest path of the electric power line to obtain resultant cost reduction. Up to 18.3[%] of length reduction can be expected compared to conventional method when the lines are connected through the Steiner points, which also can result in appreciable cost reduction.
Detection of Fire Location And Reliability Improvement of the Conventional Fire Detector and P-type Receiver

Automatic fire alarm system is set up to automatically detect fire on buildings. Because of economic reasons, P-type receiver and a conventional type fire detector is normally used for automatic fire alarm system in Korea. Because early detection of fire is regarded as important, the need of finding technique of fire location increases. This paper is studied a method to improve a reliability and add a function of fire location detection on a conventional type fire detector and P-type receiver. Fire location is detected by a method that controller attached on the receiver and the detector is read with a time lag. A reliability of fire detection alarm system is improved with a method that false fire alarm is able to decrease using two different principle detector together. This paper is studied for basic data of improvement of low-cost addressable automatic fire alarm system.
A Random Sampling Method for Generation Adequacy Assessment Including Wind-Power

This paper presents a novel random sampling method for generation adequacy assessment including wind-power. Although a time sequential sampling has advantages than a random sampling in its assessment results, it takes long assessment time. Therefore, an effective random sampling method for generation adequacy assessment is highly recommended to get specific reliability indices quickly. The proposed method is based on the Monte-Carlo simulation with state sampling and it can be applied to generation adequacy assessment with other intermittent power sources.
Characteristics of Grounding Impedances of Carbon Compound Grounding Electrodes

This paper presents characteristics of frequency-dependent grounding impedance and transient grounding impedance for the carbon compound grounding electrode used in the installation of computerized electronic equipment and lightning protection system. The frequency-dependent grounding impedances were measured by applying sinusoidal currents in the frequency range from 100 [Hz] to 10[MHz], and the transient grounding impedances were examined by subjecting the impulse current with the front-time between 1~80[
]. As a result, the ground resistance of the carbon compound grounding electrode is less than that of another type grounding electrodes. The transient grounding impedance is relatively low and the conventional grounding impedance is rather lower than the ground resistance. The frequency-dependent grounding impedance of the carbon compound grounding electrode is capacitive and the grounding impedance is decreased with increasing the frequency of injected currents. Therefore in the case that the carbon compound grounding electrode is jointly used with large-scaled grounding electrodes, it is possible to reduce the high frequency grounding impedance of the integrated grounding electrode system.
A Study on the Safety of Medical IT System connecting Medical Insulation Transformer in Medical Locations

An accidental disconnection of power supply for operating theatres may result in fatal accidents. Thus, it is necessary to import the electric safety system in medical locations. This paper shows an analysis of simulation for the safety in medical IT system based on KS C IEC 60364-7-710(Electrical Installations of Buildings - Requirements for special installations or locations - Medical locations). The analysis was progressed by measuring leakage currents according to variation of volts, circuits and loads. And it was made database for calculation the reasonable length of branch circuit.
Experimental Study of The Floating-Phenomenon on Neutral Ungrounded UPS System

In this study we investigate the background of UPS output transformer(
) operation on neutral ungrounded system, and perform field experiment of neutral floating-phenomenon for the inter-locked securing of electric facilities and improvement of neutral floating-phenomenon. Experiment results show that a floating-phenomenon occurs when four-pole input-breaker trip and the neutral to earth voltage occurring concurrently is identified as phantom voltage. And the measures for the transient overvoltage that can occur in floating-state also are investigated. As a result, the risk elements of neutral ungrounded method as well as neutral floating-phenomenon are removed by installation of separate solidly-grounded transformer and switching four-pole input-breaker to three-pole input breaker.
The Accuracy Improvement of FBG Temperature Sensor by using Wavelet Transform

We developed a noise reduction algorithm for the measurement accuracy improvement of a fiber-optic distributed temperaure sensor system. The denoising technique is based on the wavelet transform. The proposed algorithm was applied to a FBG sensor output with the Gaussian line-fitting algorithm to minimize the output noise which originated from the intensity noise of the laser light source and the instability of signal porcessing. We confirmed the feasibility of the denoising algorithm by comparing the measurement results with those obtained with the Gaussian line-fitting algorithm only.
Breakdown Characteristics of a Vertical Sphere-Plane Air Gap in the Presence of Combustion Flame

In this study, breakdown characteristics of a vertical sphere-plane air gap in the presence of combustion flame were examined under the application of a.c. and d.c. high-voltages in order to investigate the effect of flame on the dielectric strength of air. Propane gas is used as the fuel of the flame, and the temperature distribution of air around the flame is measured. The polarity effects for the d.c. voltages and breakdown voltages of air when applied both of a.c. and d.c. voltages were examined in the case of the variation of the gap length and the horizontal distance between the flame and the high-voltage sphere electrode. The influence of relative air density, electrification and shape changes of the flame as factors that affect the breakdown voltages were discussed.
An Analysis of Potential Interference in the Vicinity of the Vertical Ground Rod

A grounding system is generally composed of several vertical, horizontal electrodes or grids. Excessive ground potential rises due to adjacent grounding electrodes can cause failures or misoperation of electronic devices and control systems. It is therefore necessary for computer-related and information-oriented equipment to be placed at a sufficient distance from the areas influenced by grounding electrodes. In this paper, in order to propose a method for evaluating the ground potential rise and interference in the vicinity of vertical grounding electrodes, the experimental and theoretical results on the potential interference between vertical grounding electrodes and its frequency dependence were described. The ground potential rise is sharply decreased with increasing the distance between grounding electrodes. In case that the separation of vertical grounding electrodes is less than 1.5[m], the potential interference coefficient was greater than 0.1 and linearly increased with the frequency of the test current within the frequency of 1[MHz].
A Study on the Improvement of Electrode Installation for Measurement of Ground Resistance through Investigation on the Spot in Buildings

This paper deals with the improvement of electrode installation for measurement of ground resistance through investigation on the spot in buildings. The investigation was carried out for an earthing terminal board for measurement of ground resistance, installation of auxiliary electrode, etc. The criteria value is set up by measuring method of ground resistance in international standard. In case of inadequate installation of auxiliary electrode, a relative error is analyzed and adequate installation method of auxiliary electrode is proposed. As a consequence, it is necessary to write direction of ground and equipment, and separate auxiliary electrode for measurement of ground resistance in order to minimize measuring error.
Characteristics of DC Surface Discharge for the Development of UV Camera

Recently, UV(ultra-violet rays) camera has attracted a great deal of interest from the view point of easy judgement in inspections and diagnoses of the safety of power equipment. Especilly, UV camera is applied the inspection of UV with corona discharge. One of the most important and difficult problems is the basic research of filter design, materials and corona discharge. In this paper, we will report on the UV generation, corona pulse count and the polarity effect of positive and negative DC surface discharge in air. Also, corona discharge characteristics are analyzed using prototype UV camera of Korea. UV generation and corona pulse count due to surface discharge in positive needle is higher than that of negative needle.
A Study on Ion Wind Characteristics of Acceleration Type Multipoint Electrode

In this paper, after an acceleration typed ion wind generator which could format strong electric field in air was manufactured and installed, the effects of the electrode configuration and distance of acceleration type ion wind generator with triangle structure on the ion wind generation characteristics were investigated. As a result, the ion wind generator with curvature multipoint electrode could generate higher ion wind velocity and ion wind generation yield than others with multipoint electrode, curvature line electrode, line electrode structure. The ion wind generator with curvature multipoint electrode showed a peak ion wind velocity of 1.33[m/s] at 19.0[kV] and a ion wind generation yield of 0.12[m/Ws] at 15.0[kV].
