A Design of the Solar Tracker for LED Streetlight in Using Solar Cell

A standalone LED lighting system in using solar energy has been used usually less than 70W of lighting power because of a troublesome installation and maintenance. In this system, as more and more LED lighting power increases, the capacity of photovoltaic panel does proportionally, and to improve the charging efficiency of solar energy, MPPT(Maximum Power Point Tracking) techniques is used frequently, but the solar tracker is not. In this paper, a solar tracker which traces the light of the sun in varying hour to hour is studied to apply to the standalone LED lighting system. This solar tracker consists of twin axis for tracing the azimuth and altitude respectively, and it has a robust structure with safe mode to stand a strong wind. As a result of analysis, generating efficiency of the traced type has improved on the fixed one 28.84% on average.
Lyot-Type High-Order Fiber Comb Filter Based on Polarization-Diversity Loop Structure

In this paper, we propose a Lyot-type optical fiber comb filter based on a polarization-diversity loop structure (PDLS), which has flat-top pass bands and multiwavelength switching capability. Generally, the PDLS can remove the dependency of the filter on input polarization. The proposed filter is composed of a polarization beam splitter, two half-wave plates (HWPs), and two polarization-maintaining fiber loops concatenated with a
offset between their principal axes. By controlling two HWPs, it can operate in a flat-top band mode or a lossy flat-top band mode with an inherent insertion loss of ~3.49dB. In particular, flat-top bands can be interleaved in both modes, which cannot be realized in a Lyot-Sagnac comb filter based on a fiber coupler. Compared with Solc-type high-order comb filters with the same order, the proposed filter shows sharper transition between pass and stop bands.
A Study on LED Lighting Environment of Asians and Westerners by Behaviors in Residential Space

This study describes the difference of lighting directing techniques of between asian and westerner in the residential space, and presents the LED lighting environment according to the residents' behaviors. This study was conducted with Koreans, European and North Americans, and the space range was limited to the living room where the various activities occur. The data of the desired LED lighting environment is drawn through lighting technique, illumination color temperature and illuminance variation of LED in living room, and the detailed study results are as follows ; First, the lighting in living space should be made with considering the various behaviors because the expected level according to consideration or not of behavior makes much difference. Second, the comfortably feeling LED lighting environments that are lighting technique, illumination color temperature and illuminance variation, are different between Koreans and North Americans, but Koreans and European feel comfortable under the similar LED lighting environments. Third, the data for the comfortable LED lighting environments is established according to the various residents' behaviors, which are watching TV, reading, studying, relaxing, chatting, entertaining guests. And then, the established LED lighting environments are analyzed with characteristic of behavior and classified according to lighting technique, illumination color temperature and illuminance variation for understanding their characteristic Few studies have been conducted to find out difference of the comfortably feeling LED lighting environment between asians and westerners. Therefore, in this study, it has a great significance to present the difference of the LED lighting environments that asians and westerners feel comfortable in living space, and to draw the characteristic of the expected lighting environment according to residents' behaviors.
Analysis on the Domestic and International Illumination Research Trends in 2012 and Further Study Suggestion

This paper focuses on the domestic illumination research trends in 2012 based on reviewing the published papers in the Journal of the Korean Institute of Illuminating and Electrical Installation Engineers. It classifies and resumes the papers in five themes including exterior lighting, interior lighting, LED/OLED, optical device and optical fiber, and lighting industry. By comparatively studying a large number of papers published in Japan, North America, and China in the same year, the international illumination research trends are also figured out and further academic research topics are suggested.
Location Measurement method Depending on Reflection Characteristics of Ultrasonic Sensors for The Flat LED Lamp

In this paper, the location measurement method for the reliable location data using ultrasonic sensors is proposed for the dimming control of the LED flat lamp. The measurement errors depending on the reflection angle of the object have to be considered to obtain the reliable location data in the ultrasonic sensors. In the experiment, the cause of the measurement errors depending on reflection angle is analyzed and velocity change of ultrasonic wave depending on reflection angle is measured. And the location measurement method depending on velocity change of ultrasonic wave is proposed. From the results, the average absolute deviation of the x-coordinates was 1.47cm when the location measurement method was considered, and it was closer to the true values than the average absolute deviation of the x-coordinates which was 5.89cm without regard to the reflection angle.
A Study on the Perception of the Brightness Change according to Daylight Responsive LED Dimming Systems and Venetian Blind

This study has attempted to investigate how subjects perceive changes of brightness and their visual comfort according to daylight responsive LED(Light Emitting Diode) dimming systems in the office with venetian blind. Two studies was conducted. First study is that how subjects perceive changes of brightness and their visual comfort depending on angle control method of the venetian blind while the workplane illuminance level is being maintained through daylight responsive LED dimming system. Second study is that how subjects perceive changes of brightness and their visual comfort depending on the amount of daylight penetrated into the building while the illuminance level is being maintained through daylight responsive LED dimming system. The results of this study could be proposed as basic data in the control of the venetian blind and LED lighting in consideration of their perception on changes of brightness and visual comfort.
An Experimental Study to Determine Proper Lighting Conditions in Powder Rooms

In this study, a mock powder room was installed with variable LED lighting environments in order to conduct the experiments. The experimental conditions include luminaire type, illuminance ratio, vertical illuminance and color temperatures. The evaluation methods used were the Semantic Differential Method and a subjective evaluation on activities through observation. The SD evaluation result factor analysis categorizes ideas into three factors: brightness, emotion, and glare. The vertical bracket or the combined luminaire (luminous panel+ Vertical bracket) has better brightness than luminous panel. A vertical illuminance of 500lx is not significantly difference as compared to 600lx, allowing 500lx to be considered standard. The emotional atmosphere is evaluated as being better at lower color temperature. The luminous panel is the best for reducing glare while the vertical bracket is the worst. The best conditions differ according to the illuminance ratio of the luminous panel and vertical bracket. In the subjective evaluation (satisfaction with lighting environment, suitability to activity) the combined luminaire and 4000K received the best evaluation.
Spectral Analysis of LFO Using Synchrophasor in KEPCO Systems

The parameters of electromechanical modes offer considerable insight into the dynamic stability properties of a power system. This paper presents a results of a LFO(low-frequency oscillation) based on the time-synchronized signals measured by synchrophasor in the rolling blackout. Spectral analysis was performed, and critical parameters were estimated using the data acquired from synchrophasors installed in the KEPCO system. As significant modes, a 0.68 Hz oscillation mode that occurred prior to the forced load shedding in the rolling blackout was estimated. Such an oscillation mode can cause an uncontrollable blackout. Therefore, the system should be operated so that significant oscillation modes are not activated. This results can serve as a reference in the future for reliable system operation in the event of a similar blackout.
A Study on Implementation of Multi-Function Prototype IED H/W for Generator Protection

Generator faults does not happen more often than the transmission and substation facility faults. However, impacts on the power system by generator faults are very large. In order to minimize the impact of generator faults, generator protection and control system with high reliability is required. Most of the generator relay in generator protection and control system of large power plant of Korea is operated by imports from abroad. Accordingly, in order to accumulate source technology and increase the import substitution effect, localization of multi-function generator protection IED is being developed. This paper deals with the implementation of a multi-function prototype IED H/W, which can be command and data exchange through communication for measuring, monitoring, protection and control. And the IED specification, various relay elements, measurement elements, communication functions, module function, and test system for the prototype IED H/W are described.
Calculation of Electric Potential Rise of Horizontal Grounding Electrode Caused by Lightning Stroke Currents

An electric potential rise of the grounding electrode developed by the lightning stroke currents should be calculated for the purpose of effective protection of electrical and electronic equipment. In this paper, the electromagnetic model was applied to calculate the harmonic impedance of grounding electrode. Also the empirical equation related to the permittivity and resistivity of soil was used. The lightning current waveforms, which are expressed by the Heidler's equation, were used in order to calculate accurately transient electric potential rises. The transient voltage was obtained by using the simulated harmonic impedance and the lightning current in frequency domain. Finally, the transient voltages of horizontal grounding electrode(10m) under lightning stroke currents were calculated by IFFT(Inverse Fast Fourier Transform).
Analysis on Conductive Noise of High-Speed Train Including Pantograph Detachment

In high-speed train, the EMI is generated by pantograph detachment and switching device of motor-block. Especially, the conductive noise flows through rail as return feeder influences unintended results to sub-station, transformer, etc. These phenomena were investigated by PSIM circuit analysis tool and each part of railway system is modeled by circuit elements and switching devices. Consequently, the distorted wave in return feeder current occurs by the high speed switching frequency, and the overvoltage is applied by the pantograph detachment. Also the distortion of return current is high in starting point and it decreases from the proximity of a starting point ro the end of terminal.
A Method to Design the Rotor of Synchronous Reluctance Motors for Maximum Torque and Power Factor

This paper propose a method to design the rotor of synchronous reluctance motors(SynRM) for maximum torque and power factor by using DOE(design of experiment) with the design variables which are parameters of barriers and segments. In this process, there are problems that require lots of simulation time and number of simulations when calculating the both torque and power factor using the finite element method in order to find load angle, core loss per speed. In order to improve this problem, we calculate only value of flux linkage by finite element method, and can decrease analysis and the number of analysis time by applying steady state expression of the power factor and torque. Finally, in order to verify the characteristics of optimal model, we make prototype motor and compare with the conventional SynRM. In this experiment, we use the DC current decay test for calculating d-and q-axis inductance.
A Study on the Zero-Voltage-Switching Three-Level DC/DC Converter using Primary Clamping Diodes

This paper presents A Zero-Voltage-Switching(ZVS) Three-Level DC/DC Converter using Primary Clamping Diodes. The Previous ZVS Three-Level DC/DC converter realizes ZVS for the switches with the use of the leakage inductance(or external resonant inductance) and the output capacitors of the switches, however the rectifier diodes suffer from recovery which results in oscillation and voltage spike. In order to solve this problem, this paper proposes a novel ZVS Three-Level DC/DC converter, which introduces two clamping diodes to the basic Three-Level converter to eliminate the oscillation and clamp the rectified voltage to the reflected input voltage.
A Study on the Temperature Compensation of ASIC for AFCI

In order to avoid the electrical fire, AFCI(Arc Fault Cirruit Interrupter) has been obligated to be adopted in the United States of America since 2002. AFCI using line resistor of neutral trace needs to compensate the variation of the line resistance by temperature variation. In this paper, the ASIC including the temperature compensation circuit is implemented. The proposed implementation is verified by showing the effectiveness of an electric and a temperature characteristics for Arc signals by simulation results.
Real Time Simulator for a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor with Power Converter

Recently, the real time simulator to develop the inverter drive board and motor control algorithm for high power induction motor and PM synchronous motor is required. In this paper, the real time simulator based on the voltage control for a PM synchronous motor is proposed. The resistor, inductor, and the induced voltage for the modeling of a PM synchronous motor is implemented by the power converter including the LCL filter and the PWM rectifier. The induced voltage of a PM synchronous motor is simulated by the capacitor voltage of the LCL filter, which is controlled by PI voltage controller and the deadbeat current controller. The operation and the simulated characteristics of the proposed real time simulator for a PM synchronous motor is verified by the simulation.
A Study on the Detent Torque Reduction of Claw Pole Permanent Magnet Type Motor

This paper has done a three-dimensional FEM analysis of the PM claw pole stepping motor. As magnetization happens in the z-axis, which does not have a constant value, three-dimensional FEM analysis is necessary for characteristic analysis of PM claw pole stepping motors. Because it is a type of permanent magnet motor, the PM claw pole stepping motor naturally has a detent torque. This torque is known to show negative effects on motor performance. To improve motor performance, reducing the detent torque is very important during the motor design. This paper applied DOE for optimization of stator pole design of the motor. Also, we compared motor performance by applying a different type of rotor shape, dividing the permanent magnet. To verify the simulation results, an experiment was done.
Voltage Dip Compensation Algorithm Using Multi-Level Inverter

Cascaded H-Bridge multi-level inverters can be implemented through the series connection of single-phase modular power bridges. In recent years, multi-level inverters are becoming increasingly popular for high power applications due to its improved harmonic profile and increased power ratings. This paper presents a control method for balancing the dc-link voltage and ride-through enhancement, a modified pulse width-modulation Compensation algorithm of cascaded H-bridge multi-level inverters. During an under-voltage protection mechanism, causing the system to shut down within a few milliseconds after a power interruption in the main input sources. When a power interruption occurs finish, if the system is a large inertia restarting the load a long time is required. This paper suggests modifications in the control algorithm in order to improve the sag ride-through performance of ac inverter. The new proposed strategy recommends maintaining the DC-link voltage constant at the nominal value during a sag period, experimental results are presented.
A Study on Comparative Analysis of Power Consumption Characteristics in long Tunnel Customers

This paper shows a reasonable demand power, that was made by the systematic and statistical way considering actual conditions, such as investigated contract power and peak power for the last 7 years of each tunnel customer as to AMR. In this dissertation, it is necessary to analyze the key features and general trend from the investigated data. It made an analysis of the feature parameters, such as average, standard deviation, median, maximum, minimun and thus it was carried by the linear and nonlinear regression analysis.
