Investigation of the Thermal Characteristics of LED Bulb Utilizing Simulation of Finite Volume Method (FVM)

Heat dissipation of the high power LED is a critical issue. To estimate the junction temperature of the LED chip is most important in characterizing the heat dissipation, but it is impossible to directly measure it. In this study, surface temperatures of the 12.8W LED bulb was measured for 5 points using a data logger and compared with the simulated results using a thermal simulator based on FVM (finite volume method) to secure a reliability of the simulation. Effects of some factors such as lens, emissivity and air inlet were investigated using simulation works and then the results were analysed.
A Study on the Standby Power Characteristics of Sensor Luminaires

Standby power, so called an electric vampire, is a power which is consumed by appliances and office equipments connected to power sources while the devices are not performing. Sensor luminaires consist of PIR(Pyroelectric Infrared Ray) sensor, illuminance sensor(CdS), and light source. The sensor luminaires are one of the devices that consume a huge amount of standby power; it stands by for an average sum of 23 hours a day and performs only when moving subjects are detected under it, which barely takes up an hour per day. The purpose of this study is to provide basic materials to the selection of standby power items and to enable to explore a way to decrease the standby power by measuring and analyzing the power consumption of sensor luminaires. According to the results, the average standby power of LED sensor luminaires is 1.1W which is significantly higher than other products, and decrease in the standby power consumption of SMPS is important through the measurement.
High Efficiency H-Bridge Multilevel Inverter System Using Bidirectional Switches

This paper proposes new 13-level inverter topology and DC/DC converter buck-boost structure topology for multilevel, compounding uni-directional and bi-directional switches, and proposes high-efficient multilevel inverter system in which the proposed two PCS(Power Conditioning System) was connected in series. In proposed multilevel inverter of forming a output 13-level phase voltage by using total 18 switching parts, Then bi-directional switch has a characteristic of reducing conduction loss and controlling the reactive power effectively by separating electrically from the neutral point. DC/DC converter for supplying in dependent 3 DC voltage to the proposed multi-level inverter generates 180-degree phase shifted PWM by the symmetrically combined structure of 2 buck-boost converter and twice switching frequency efficiency can be obtained, meanwhile, the converter can step up/down the output voltage and 20% output can be generated comparing the input voltage. This proposed system is verified with the simulation and laboratory test.
A Study on the Validation Methodology of Network Analysis Applications in Energy Management Systems

Network analysis applications in energy management systems play a key role in the economic and reliable operation of power systems. In order to provide operators with useful network information, the accurate results of topology processing, state estimation, power flow, and contingency analysis must be simulated. This paper proposes a validation methodology of network analysis applications in energy management systems. The energy management systems was checked to ensure that it meets the originally specified functions based on the proposed methodology. In addition, the performance of state estimation is evaluated with the reference of the proposed methodology. The proposed methodology is being conducted by energy management systems and the Korean power systems have been utilized for the test systems.
Sensorless control of Switched Reluctance Motor for Electric AC Compressors of Electrical Vehicles

This paper discusses study of sensorless control of a variable speed switched reluctance motor (SRM) for electric AC compressors on electrical vehicles. A typical SRM drive requires a position sensor such as an encoder or hall sensor to measure the angular rotor position. However, harsh environment in electrical AC compressors for electric vehicles makes it difficult to use the position sensor in their motor drive system. Therefore, a sensorless control scheme for electric compressor motors utilizing magnetic characteristics of SRM with respect to position angle and phase current is proposed. The overall variable speed SRM drive with position sensorless control scheme has been modeled using Matlab/Simulink software and closed loop current control simulation is presented to validate the proposed sensorless drive control.

With the energy paradigm shift from supply side management to demand side management, many researches have been done on demand side resource management and demand response. At the same time, Obix, BacNet-WS and OPC-UA are popularly used in buildings and industry energy management system. However, it is not easy to interchange the data and information among the systems cause a variety of protocols are used in buildings and factories. Therefore, in this paper, we are proposing an open business platform not only to integrate and manage the demand resources using various protocols and standards, but also to allow to plug-ins a new business service on top of the platform.
Analysis of Optical Properties of Fire Smoke and Non-fire Smoke for Reduction of Nuisance Alarm

This paper is basic study for development of an advanced photoelectric type smoke detector that has high reliability by reducing the occurrence of nuisance alarms. This paper was attempted to distinguish optical characteristics of the typical fire smoke particle and non-fire smoke particle. According to UL 268 standards, three types of test fires (the paper, the wood and the flammable liquid) were used in this paper for measurement of the fire smoke particles, and the water vapor and the cigarette smoke that were known as the main cause of the nuisance alarms were also used for the non-fire smoke particles. A smoke detection chamber was created, which was equipped with one light source and several light sensors for enabling simultaneous detection of light extinction and scattering, respectively. This paper analyzes the optical characteristics of each smoke particle using this chamber.
Operational Method of Superconducting Fault Current Limiter with Reduction Function of Asymmetric Fault Current

When fault currents contain decaying DC offset, the peak value of the fault current in the first cycle of the fault period is higher than the fault current during the steady-state period. To reduce the asymmetric fault current, this paper proposes an operation scheme using the series connection of two hybrid type Superconducting Fault Current Limiters (SFCLs) : an auxiliary SFCL and a main SFCL. The proposed method calculates the fault angle by comparing the zero-crossing time with fault detection time. According to the fault angle calculated, an auxiliary SFCL operates to reduce an asymmetric fault current during half a cycle after fault occurrence. After this process, the fault current is limited by a main SFCL. To confirm the usefulness of the proposed method, case studies using Electro-Magnetic Transients Program (EMTP)/Alternative Transient Program (ATP) Draw are perfomed.
A Methodology of Finding the Direction of Lightning Discharge using Loop-type Magnetic Field Sensors

This paper deals with a methodology that applies the time-varying magnetic fields produced by the cloud discharges to find the direction of thunderstorm movement. We investigated the basic performance of the magnetic field measurement system composed of multi-turn loop-type sensors, the differential amplifier and active integrator. As a result, the response characteristics of the magnetic field sensor system to sinusoidal signals was excellent. The frequency bandwidth ranges from about 1 kHz to 500 kHz, the response sensitivity was 0.16mV/nT. In addition, we proposed the algorithm that determines the direction of lightning discharges using the comparison of the output signals of right-angled loop-type magnetic field sensors. The accuracy of the direction finding of lightning discharges is fairly well within the measurement error of less than
. The magnetic field measurement system proposed in this work can be used to track the direction of thunderstorm movement.
Development of Sensor Based Energy Management System

With the increasing interest of energy efficiency, several buildings and factories begin to monitor energy usages with a built-in energy management system. However, the built-in energy monitoring system does not reflect the dynamics of buildings and factories energy usage. To overcome the latter, we deploy several sensors to monitor the dynamics of buildings energy usage patterns. In this paper, we are proposing a framework of a sensor based energy monitoring system. Based on our limited experiments, we can monitor power usages by a person, device and time period. As a result, we can plan a better energy usage and improve energy efficiency by the monitored energy usage profile data.
A study of Insulation Diagnosis for Large-Capacity Mold Transformer

When the large-capacity Mold type Transformer was passed through rain, after it was dried and it's parts were changed, Insulation Diagnosis was made to evaluate the condition of it and decide to recharge. Using the evaluation of Insulation Diagnosis, the urgent decision-making for recharge made blackout time minimum. In this study, it was considered that Insulation Diagnosis for the large-capacity Mold type Transformer is applied to decision-making for reuse of high voltage electric power equipment by analysis of the case study.
A Basic Study on the Attachment Process of Lightning Leader to Ground

This paper presents the results of model tests for the attachment process of lightning leader to ground which is one of poorly understood processes of cloud-to-ground lightning discharges. In order to simulate the attachment process of lightning leader to ground, we investigated the discharge characteristics of air gap between the tip of needle-shaped electrode and the soil surface as a parameter of moisture content in soils when the positive and negative
lightning impulse voltages are applied. The breakdown voltage and the discharge light were observed. As a result, the attachment processes of lightning leader to ground are strongly dependent on the grain size and the moisture content of soils. The time to breakdown was shortened with increasing the magnitude of incident impulse voltages. The delay time from application of the highest voltage to breakdown in sand is shortened with increasing the moisture content. The delay time from application of the voltage to breakdown in gravel varied from about
. As the moisture content in soil increases, the breakdown voltages are decreased and the breakdown voltage versus time to breakdown curves are shifted toward the lower side. The results obtained in this work are similar to those for non-uniform air gap stressed by lightning impulse voltages.
A Maximum Torque Control of Synchronous Reluctance Motors Considering Magnetic Saturation

This paper presents a synchronous reluctance motor drive for maximum torque to current (MTC) considering magnetic saturation. Measured d-axis and q-axis inductances are used to obtain current angle vs. maximum torque curve using torque equation. Maximum torque to current control is achieved by the current angle and stator current for maximum torque from the current angle vs. maximum torque curve at a given torque reference.
A Study on Solar Power Generation Efficiency Analysis according to Latitude and Altitude

To solve the problem of conventional fossil energy, utilization of renewable energy is growing rapidly. Solar energy as an energy source is infinite, and a variety of research is being conducted into its utilization. To change solar energy into electrical energy, we need to build a solar power plant. The efficiency of such a plant is strongly influenced by meteorological factors; that is, its efficiency is determined by solar radiation. However, when analyzing observed generation data, it is clear that the generated amount is changed by various factors such as weather, location and plant efficiency. In this paper, we proposed a solar power generation prediction algorithm using geographical factors such as latitude and elevation. Hence, changes in generated amount caused by the installation environment are calculated by curve fitting. Through applying the method to calculate this generation amount, the difference between real generated amount is analyzed.
Development of an Anti-Freezing Heating Cable Temperature Controller and Its Power Saving Effects Analysis

Although anti-freezing heating cable has been widely installed in most residential boiler pipe, there were excessive energy consumption and fire risk due to inadequate temperature control. In this paper, a new energy saving fire risk-free controller was developed by using microprocessing operation which include detection of not only boiler room temperature but also pipe surface one. Its actual effect has been verified to save more than a half of the energy consumption comparing to conventional controller through temperature and humidity chamber experiment.
