Polarimetric Fiber Pressure Sensor Incorporating Polarization-Diversity-Loop-Based Sagnac Interferometer

In this paper, we demonstrated a polarimetric fiber pressure sensor using a polarization-diversity-loop-based Sagnac interferometer(PDLSI) composed of polarization-maintaining fiber(PMF) and a fiber Bragg grating(FBG). In order to compare the pressure sensitivity for various kinds of PMF, three kinds of bow-tie PMF were employed as sensor heads. The maximum pressure sensitivity was measured as approximately -15.07nm/MPa, and an R2 value to represent sensor linearity was measured as ~0.992 at the sensor system using corresponding PMF over a pressure range of 0-0.3MPa. An FBG was utilized and located adjacent to the PMF segment for compensating temperature-induced errors in the measurement of pressure. The pressure sensitivity of the proposed sensor was improved by approximately four times compared with the previously reported pressure sensor based on polarization-maintaining photonic crystal fiber.
A Study on Generator Temperature and Power Converter Efficiency according to change of Wind Velocity

Recently, because a renewable power source must operate as a constant rate in accordance with RPS(Renewable Portfolio Standard), the study of the renewable power sources has been ongoing. Especially because of noise of wind turbine, troubleshooting, and urban greening business, research related with small wind turbine are underway. The economics and reliability are important parts for the activation of small wind turbine, such as solar energy. In this paper, by analyzing the temperature variations for each location and efficiency of power conversion devices in accordance with short period wind speed changes in simulation test, we reviewed the safety about temperature variations of wind generator and the method of selection of power converter.
Loop Current Calculation based on Voltage Angle Difference at Tie Switch for Switching Plan Validation in Distribution System Operation

Distribution systems are operated in radial structure, but temporal loop structure could be founded the live load transfer. Main purposes of reconfiguration of distribution network are load balancing, loss minimization and voltage drop maintaining. In the loop structure, huge loop current can be flowed between two substations in case of large voltage angle difference. Protection devices of distribution line can be triped by this huge loop current. So, precise calculation of loop current is very important for secure switching. This paper proposes a novel calculation method of loop current using the voltage angle differences measured at the tie switches. Feasibility of the propose method has been verified by various case studies based on Matlab simulation.
A Study of Voltage Balancing Method in Series-Connected EDLCs for High Power Applications

In this paper, the problem of voltage unbalancing in series-connected multiple electric double-layer capacitors(EDLCs) is studied. Good understanding of this problem is required in order to increase reliability and stability of an energy storage system comprising EDLCs. Existing methods to settle voltage unbalancing cannot mitigate the problem enough for each cell, since most method have been applied to each module. For equalizing between cells, Zener diode which is one of passive method have been well examined in literature. However, Zener have well not used in balancing due to heating problem. In addition, It is difficult to choose Zener diode fitted rating voltage of EDLC, because of its internal resistance. Thus, we proposed passive balancing using Zener diode by analyzing parasitic element of Zener and EDLC. To experimentally confirm the balancing effect, we compared in two occasions which are with and without passive. As a result, proposed passive balancing circuit mitigated unbalanced voltage gap between EDLCs.
A Study About Grid Impose Method On Real-Time Simulator For Wind-Farm Management System

Owing to the variability of large-scaled wind power system, the development of wind farm management technologies and related compensation methods have been receiving attention. To provide an accurate and reliable output power, certain wind farm adopts a specified management system including a wind prediction model and grid expectation solutions for considering grid condition. Those technologies are focused on improving the reliability and stability issues of wind farms, which can affect not only nearby system devices but also a voltage condition of utility grid. Therefore, to adapt the develop management system, an expectation process about voltage condition of Point of Common Coupling should be integrated in operating system for responding system requirements in real-time basis. This paper introduce a grid imposing method for a real-time based wind farm management system. The expected power can be transferred to the power flow section and the required quantity about reactive power can be calculated through the proposed system. For the verification process, the gauss-seidel method is introduced in the Matlab/Simulink for analysing power flow condition. The entire simulation process was designed to interwork with PSCAD for verifying real power system condition.
Parameters Estimation Characteristics of Five-Phase Squirrel-Cage Induction Motor within Over Current Load

This paper propose a variable parameter estimations for variable over current load of five-phase squirrel-cage induction motor(IM) to servo control system. In order to high performance control of AC motor using a field oriented control(FOC) and direct torque control(DTC) algorithm, there are required precise motor parameters for slip calculation, flux observer, controller gain, torque command of current components, rotor position, speed estimation, and so on. We are suggest a analyzed estimation results of the motor parameters that developing five-phase squirrel-cage IM have a stator of concentrated winding for experimental within variable over current load at rated input frequency. There are results of stator winding measurement, no-load test, locked-rotor test, variable over current load test, and estimated parameters of equivalent circuits using manufactured experimental apparatus by IEEE Standard Test Procedure for Polyphase Induction Motors and Generators 112-2004.
Analysis on Application Location of SFCL according to Circuit Breaker Burden Index with Weight Factor Estimation

As the industrial development in Korea, the power demand is rapidly increased. The power system has been extended and complicated to meet the power demand. However, the fault current increases because the structure of power system reduces the equivalent impedance. One of the solutions to reduce the fault current is Superconducting Fault Current Limiter(SFCL) and the researches of SFCL application have much conducted. In this paper, we used the Circuit Breker Burden Index(CBBI) to select application location of SFCL because the CBBI may consider a fault current of each line. In addition, this paper divided the weight factor used to calculate the CBBI on a case by case basis and analyzed this characteristics through experiment.
Short-term Wind Farm Power Forecasting Using Multivariate Analysis to Improve Wind Power Efficiency

This paper presents short-term wind farm power forecasting method using multivariate analysis and time series. Based on factor analysis, the proposed method makes new independent variables which newly composed by raw independent variables such as wind speed, ramp rate, wind power. Newly created variables are used in the time series model for forecasting wind farm power. To demonstrate the improved accuracy, the proposed method is compared with persistence model commonly used as reference in wind power forecasting using data from Jeju Island. The results of case studies are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed forecasting method.
A Study on Cluster Head Selection and a Cluster Formation Plan to Prolong the Lifetime of a Wireless Sensor Network

The energy of a sensor in a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) puts a limit on the lifetime of the network. To prolong the lifetime, a clustering plan is used. Clustering technology gets its energy efficiency through reducing the number of communication occurrences between the sensors and the base station (BS). In the distributed clustering protocol, LEACH-like (Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy - like), the number of sensor`s cluster head (CH) roles is different depending on the sensor`s residual energy, which prolongs the time at which half of nodes die (HNA) and network lifetime. The position of the CH in each cluster tends to be at the center of the side close to BS, which forces cluster members to consume more energy to send data to the CH. In this paper, a protocol, pseudo-LEACH, is proposed, in which a cluster with a CH placed at the center of the cluster is formed. The scheme used allows the network to consume less energy. As a result, the timing of the HNA is extended and the stable network period increases at about 10% as shown by the simulation using MATLAB.
A Development of Educational Software for Power System Reliability Assessment

This paper is on the development of computer software which can be utilized as a power system analysis tool for reliability assessment education. The input data of the developed software are so simple that even a non-expert easily understand how to use it. The software provides not only reliability indices but also their distributions, moreover, it provides the factors those effect the indices, which made the software even more useful for educational purpose. The developed software utilized Monte-carlo simulation based on the state duration sampling, therefore it can manage various probability distributions such as exponential, Weibull, gamma and lognormal distribution. Within the software, the parameters of the distribution can be decided automatically from its mean and variance, that is another advantage as an educational software.
A Study on the Analysis of Correlation Decay Distance(CoDecDist) Model for Enhancing Spatial Prediction Outputs of Spatially Distributed Wind Farms

As wind farm outputs depend on natural wind resources that vary over space and time, spatial correlation analysis is needed to estimate power outputs of wind generation resources. As a result, geographic information such as latitude and longitude plays a key role to estimate power outputs of spatially distributed wind farms. In this paper, we introduce spatial correlation analysis to estimate the power outputs produced by wind farms that are geographically distributed. We present spatial correlation analysis of empirical power output data for the JEJU Island and ERCOT ISO (Texas) wind farms and propose the Correlation Decay Distance (CoDecDist) model based on geographic correlation analysis to enhance the estimation of wind power outputs.
Isolated Step-up DC/DC Converter applied Soft-switching Method

Recently, renewable energy sources are under the spotlight. due to the depletion of fossil fuels and environmental problem for the carbon dioxide. Among them, research on the Photovoltaic System using solar energy systems has been actively conducted. In this paper, we propose boosting the insulated DC/DC converter topologies Applied to soft-switching methods used in photovoltaic PCS. The proposed topology is of a type that combines a series of full-bridge converter and a boost converter, a full bridge converter and applying the insulation and soft switching system, the output voltage boost stage is carried out for the boost control. The proposed circuit validity was verified through the PSIM simulation and 5kW PV PCS Prototype and experiments.
