Analysis of the subsidence ares with 3D-GIS and clustering

An integrated 3D GIS-based approach for understanding underground environment is proposed and applied to a land subsidence in densely populated region. Bedrock and geological discontinues were treated as main factors in this study. Because land subsidence in this study area was caused by cavity owing to dissolved limestone in percolating ground water. Ground was classified according to bedrock types using a clustering method and geological information, N value, and RQD value of boreholes were visualized and integrated by 3D-GIS. Therefore it was possible to recognize underground space easily and analyze the ground information effectively.
Parallelization of Raster GIS Operations Using PC Clusters

With the increasing demand of processing massive geographic data, conventional GISs based on the single processor architecture appear to be problematic. Especially, performing complex GIS operations on the massive geographic data is very time consuming and even impossible. This is due to the processor speed development does not keep up with the data volume to be processed. In the field of GIS, this PC clustering is one of the emerging technology for handling massive geographic data effectively. In this study, a MPI(Message Passing Interface)-based parallel processing approach was conducted to implement the existing raster GIS operations that typically requires massive geographic data sets in order to improve the processing capabilities and performance. Specially for this research, four types of raster CIS operations that Tomlin(1990) has introduced for systematic analysis of raster GIS operation. A data decomposition method was designed and implemented for selected raster GIS operations.
Spatial Analyses and Modeling of Landsacpe Dynamics

The primary focus of this study is to provide a general methodology which can be utilized to understand and analyze environmental issues such as long term ecosystem dynamics and land use/cover change by development of 2D dynamic landscape models and model-based simulation. Change processes in land cover and ecosystem function can be understood in terms of the spatial and temporal distribution of land cover resources. In development of a system to understand major processes of change and obtain predictive information, first of all, spatial heterogeneity is to be taken into account because landscape spatial pattern affects on land cover change and interaction between different land cover types. Therefore, the relationship between pattern and processes is to be included in the research. Landscape modeling requires different approach depending on the definition, assumption, and rules employed for mechanism behind the processes such as spatial event process, land degradation, deforestration, desertification, and change in an urban environment. The rule-based models are described in the paper for land cover change by natural fires. Finally, a case study is presented as an example using spatial modeling and simulation to study and synthesize patterns and processes at different scales ranging from fine-scale to global scale.
A GIS Approach to Select a Suitable Site for Industrial Complex in North Korea

The purpose of this paper is to provide the basic data to select the most proper site, which is essential for the economic activation of North Korea by means of the GIS tool. In this purpose, firstly, Nampo area is sampled as model case, classifying the factors into the natural environmental one and socio- cultural one. Secondly, to analyze the land use status and topographic status which is essential for natural environment factor. Besides USLE(Universal Soil Loss Equation), which is one of the disaster effect assessments, is being applied to suggest the selection method for minimizing the environment change by way of assuming the land effluence amount. The started could advance to prove the ideal model in selecting the most suitable site while minimizing the environmental change by means of the composite tool of GIS and USLE.
Analysis of the Distribution Pattern of Seawater Intrusion in Coastal Area using the Geostatistics and GIS

Distribution pattern of seawater intrusion was analyzed from the spatial distribution map of chloride using the geostatistics and CIS analyses. The chloride distribution map made by kriging(ordinary kriging and co-kriging) after exploratory spatial data analysis. Kriging provides an advanced methodology which facilitates quantification of spatial features and enables spatial interpolation. TDS, Na
were selected as second parameters of co-kriging which is higher value of correlation coefficients between chloride and others groundwater properties. Chloride concentration is highest in yeminchon and coastal area. And result in co-kriging was accurate than ordinary kriging.
Probability-based Pre-fetching Method for Multi-level Abstracted Data in Web GIS

The effective probability-based tile pre-fetching algorithm and the collaborative cache replacement algorithm are able to reduce the response time for user's requests by transferring tiles which will be used in advance and determining tiles which should be removed from the restrictive cache space of a client based on the future access probabilities in Web GISs(Geographical Information Systems). The Web GISs have multi-level abstracted data for the quick response time when zoom-in and zoom-out queries are requested. But, the previous pre-fetching algorithm is applied on only two-dimensional pre-fetching space, and doesn't consider expanded pre-fetching space for multi-level abstracted data in Web GISs. In this thesis, a probability-based pre-fetching algorithm for multi-level abstracted in Web GISs was proposed. This algorithm expanded the previous two-dimensional pre-fetching space into three-dimensional one for pre-fetching tiles of the upper levels or lower levels. Moreover, we evaluated the effect of the proposed pre-fetching algorithm by using a simulation method. Through the experimental results, the response time for user requests was improved 1.8%∼21.6% on the average. Consequently, in Web GISs with multi-level abstracted data, the proposed pre-fetching algorithm and the collaborative cache replacement algorithm can reduce the response time for user requests substantially.
The Development of a Tour Route Guidance System Using a Traveling Salesman Problem Algorithm

This study focused on offering a helpful information for the touring. To develop a tour route guidance tool, it is needed to use a GIS function, which can suggest a possible shortest path based on time and distance. A Traveling salesman problem algorithm, which was developed to solve multi destination problem in network analysis, was used to implement a tour guidance system. This system was developed using ArcObjects programming components within ArcGIS 8.3. Jeju city was selected for the case study to apply the tool and to test the effectiveness of it. This study demonstrated that this tool was considerably effective for finding a probable optimum tour path in the following aspects. First, it can help tourists to select several attractions from numerous tour sites in an area given limited time. Second, tourist can manage time efficiently by organizing their tour courses on the basis of the tool. Third, tourists can reduce the uncertainties that may happen under unexpected situations in unfamiliar places by obtaining specific spatial information using the tool. Fourth, the Graphic User Interface of the tool can be easily used to obtain visual information of spatial data.
A Study on Web-based Mobile Mapping System Using Real-Time GPS/INS System

The Mobile Mapping System collects geographic information through mounted sensors such as a pair of CCD camera, CPS, IMU(Inertial Measurement Unit) and Odometer at regular distance or time interval. The advantage of such system is to easy identification of positions and geographic informations of mobile objects in real time. Among many wireless communication ways for real-time positions and geographic information data from the mobile mapping system to the user such as PDA, wireless modem, cellophane, and web, the web is considered to be more stabile, effect and economic than any other methods. In this paper, a study on the web-based real-time mobile mapping platform to identify the user position is presented using the real-time NovAtel BDS.
An Analysis of Spatial Characteristics in Urban Residential Area Using GIS - Focused on the Land Price according to Parcel Attributes -

Urban residential area, one of the main subjects of urban and architectural studies, can be analyzed accurately and rapidly with CIS. (Geographic Information System) And the applications of GIS in urban studies are too macro to be explained in architectural terms and the ones in architectural studies are not so much active rather be used as a secondary means. So the studies in urban-architectural scale are very useful in many ways. This study explores urban-architectural possibilities of analytic capabilities of GIS through the analysis of spatial characteristics of residential area in terms of land price according to parcel attributes. It is found, firstly, that the parcel attributes have relations with land price and its distribution patterns. Secondly, it is verified that the visualization capability of GIS can be a very useful method of analysis through user-interface effects in urban-architectural scaled analysis.
