Journal of Korea Spatial Information Society, volume 13, issue 3, 2005, Pages 195~209
Forest road has been an essential infrastructure for various forestry practices as well as for recreational use, disaster management, and local economics promotion. Since 1980s, extensive network of forest roads has been constructed as an national project in Korea. However, due to the minimal-budget of the project, accurate maps of forest road are not usually available. Although forest road map is a main thematic layer for the forest Geographic Information System (FGIS), its locational accuracy has not been sufficient for the practical applications and, therefore, the update of digital forest road maps is urgent. The objectives of this study is to compare ae methodology of generating and updating digital forest road maps from the aspects of the map accuracy and the efficiency of methods. Four mapping methods (GPS surveying, satellite imagery, ortho aerial photograph, and digital photogrammetry) were applied to generate the forest road maps over the study area of Mt. Oseo in Chungchungnam-do, which has a 35km forest roads distributed in national, public and private forests. The forest road Imp produced by digital photogrammetric method is the most accurate and comparable to GPS surveying although it required the greatest amount of labor time.

Journal of Korea Spatial Information Society, volume 13, issue 3, 2005, Pages 221~237
This study attempts at building a GIS computing environment that incorporates object-relational spatio-temporal database for the time geography model with space-time path, space-time prism and space-time accessibility. The proposed computing environment is composed of ( i ) mobile GIS application for collecting spatio-temporal trajectory data of an individual, ( ii ) spatio-temporal database server that includes time geography model, and (iii) geovisualization client that performs time geographic queries to the spatio-temporal database. The spatio-temporal trajectory data collected by GPS-PDA client is automatically processed and sent to server through data management middleware. The spatio-temporal database implemented by extending a generic DBMS provides spatio-temporal objects, functions, and SQL. The geovisualization client illustrates 3D visual results of the queries about space-time path, space-time prism, and space-time accessibility. This study confirms the possibility of integrating mobile GIS and DBMS for time geography model, and it presents the appropriate database model with spatio-temporal objects and functions that may handle very large data for time geography application.

Journal of Korea Spatial Information Society, volume 13, issue 3, 2005, Pages 253~260
The aim of this study is to analyze the temporal and spatial distribution aspects of red tide using GIS techniques. The damage caused by red tide appears various aspects according to the species, concentration and spatial distribution of red tide plankton. Therefore, in order to prevent the damage of red tide it is important to understand the distribution characteristics of red tide by each species according to time and space. In this perspective, we analyzed the beginning outbreak area, spatial occurrence frequency and spatial migration of red tide. The spatial data used by this study was constructed by digitizing the red tide quick report and coupled with various attributes such as species, concentration and water temperature for construction of red tide database. We used various spatial analysis methods such as union, intersect, tracking, buffer and spatial interpolation for analyzing temporal and spatial characteristics of red tide. From the result of these spatial analyses, we could get the spatial information on the temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of red tide at the Southern Sea.

Kim Eun-Hyung ;
Journal of Korea Spatial Information Society, volume 13, issue 3, 2005, Pages 261~281
Geospatial information and technologies are considered as a fundamental element in the foreign advanced e-governments. Integration of e-Government and GIS technology should be an important task for the Korean e-government. Purpose of this study is to propose integration strategies for Korean e-Government and National GIS projects in a GIS perspective. For the successful integration this study analyzes the evolutional stages of e-Government and changes of GIS paradigms in a more comprehensive way. This study hypothesizes that integration of e-Government and GIS can create greater synergic effects fur the improved citizen services and increased efficiency of governmental administration. To verify the hypothesis, cases of advanced e-Governments in the foreign countries and progress of the Korean e-Government projects are compared and integration strategies are suggested. The strategies are as follows: expanded integration of geospatial and text-based information in e-Government for the greater synergic effects, implementation of GIS portal for e-Government, and development of a variety of geospatial information services for easy access and public participation. Most importantly, innovation of the institutional environments can be considered as an essential requirement to enhance and broaden interdepartmental partnerships. To realize the integration strategies suggested, this study presented the future projects under the following 5 topics: 'service', 'integration of information', 'technology', 'organization' and 'infrastructure for integration'. It is expected that results of this study can contribute to the bigger picture of Korean e-Government and the third National GIS master plan in 2006.

To analyze travel demand fur transportation policy and transportation planning, it is important to construct realistic and reliable traffic data. And it needs a user friendly system to demonstrate transportation problems in the transportation planning and transportation management aspect. Generally, to construct network for analysis and collection about social and economical data is a core of transportation planning model. However, it takes a lot of time and effect. To overcome this problem GIS is more effective and efficient in data processing, such as selecting, editing and visualizing, etc. However, it is an early stage to use CIS in the transportation problems. This paper shows a new GIS-T system. The system can give traffic information and plan transportation planning using GIS which has ability as spatial representation and spatial analysis. To build this system, we design interfaces that are able to communicate transportation package for analysis with GIS and manage network efficiently, such as editing and examination. And we also develop a module for traffic information processing to handle spatial data and add it on the system. The proposed system shows more realistic transportation network modeling because the system presents more effective conditions to analyze network. And it can be a tool that can analyze various transportation problems.
