Land use suitability analysis of Seoul based on ecopolis planning concept
Journal of Korea Spatial Information Society, volume 4, issue 2, 1996, Pages 107~119
The purpose of this study was to carry out land use suitability analysis of Seoul Metropolitan City based on ecopolis planning concept or environmentally sound and sustainable development. Objectives of the analyses were to save energy by increasing urban density and allocating urban land use types near to public transportation system, to increase food producing capacity by restoring fertile agricultural lands, and to enhance urban ecosystem by expanding and networking parks and green spaces. This study has two phases. First, the land use suitability analyses for commercial, industrial, residential, agricultural, and green spaces were carried out. Second, required urban land use .types were allocated based on ESSD concept. Two alternative land use plans were developed based on two population sizes:existing population of 11million and 4.4million derived by the application of ermergy theory of T. Odum.
A GIS Approach towards the Evaluation of the Urban Residential Environment and to Zoning for Management
Journal of Korea Spatial Information Society, volume 4, issue 2, 1996, Pages 121~130
Current management endeavors towards the urban residential environment lack in specific evaluation criteria and relevant strategies. This study attempts to systematically evaluate the quality of the residential environment and to zone areas that need improvement. In the case of the Changshin -dong area, three steps were performed in GIS analyses. First, the quality of residential en¬vironment was evaluated in terms of four environmental objectives-- i.e. safety, health, convenience, and amenity. Second, for the areas that do not satisfy any of the four requirements above, zonig was conducted in terms of housing quality, infrastructure, and housing density. Finally, relevant strategies for improvement were assigned to those areas. The approach presents a shift from a current method that manily relys on experts' intuition or biased judgement, to a more systematic and logical one. Such an approach is expected to be useful for establishing other urban developmental strategies.
An Application of GIS Technique to Analyze the Location of Fastfood Stores : The Case of Kangnam-Gu , Seoul
Journal of Korea Spatial Information Society, volume 4, issue 2, 1996, Pages 131~146
The purpose of this study is to extract the main locational factors to affect the location of fastfood stores in Kangnam -Gu, Seoul by using Geographic Information Systems. The Franchise system, which came to be employed in full scale since 1990, now enjoying the booming period, especially fast food industry. The procedure of this research has four steps. First, the spatial distribution of fastfood chain stores in Seoul is analyzed by the land use and road map. Second, the spatial variations of fastfood stores in dong districts of Seoul is explained by multiple regression analysis. Third, the main locational factors to affect the location of fast food stores in Kangnam -Gu are extracted by demand and supply sides using GIS technologies. Finally, the potentiallocational zones where are selected by extracted locational factors are compared with the actual distribution of f astf ood stores in Kangnam - Gu. In terms of demand side, the main locational factors include commercial and service facilities, sub¬ways and bus stops which have a lot of pedestrians, and large apartment districts that have high popu¬lation densities. In terms of supply sides, the main locational factors include land use types and land value, accessibility. After fast food chain stores of Kangnam -Gu are overlaid final potentiallocational zones extracted by demand and supply sides of locational factors, it can be identified that over 80 % of fastfood stores are located in the potentiallocational zone. In conclusion, this study shows that spatial analysis functions may potentially be improved using GIS technologies. However there are still difficulties for the locational analysis for service industries to col¬lect appropriate data in terms of computerized base maps as well as consumer behavior and store characteristics itself.
GIS Application for Rural Water Quality Management
Journal of Korea Spatial Information Society, volume 4, issue 2, 1996, Pages 147~157
A rural water quality management information system(RWQMIS) by integrating Geo¬graphic Information System(GIS) with the existing models (pollutants transport and river water quality) is described. A simple pollutant load model to calculate delivered pollutants to stream, Tank model to generate daily runoff and QUAL2E model to predict river water quality, were incorporated into GIS. The system was applied to
watershed in Icheon Gun and Yongin Gun, Kyonggi Do. The spatial distributions of produced pollutant load, discharged pollutant load, delivered ratio to the stream, and the river water quality status for given sites were successfully generated.
GIS-T Database for Korea : A Recomendation
Journal of Korea Spatial Information Society, volume 4, issue 2, 1996, Pages 159~179
The objective of the paper is to recommend a database format of geographic informa¬tion systems for transportation (GIS-T) based on a review of geographic data files (GDF), a European standard format for navigation and the topologically integrated geographic encoding and referenc¬ing files (TIGER) if the USA The establishment of the standard format for transportation database is important for sharing data since data collection is costly. We believe the recommended format would reduce the implementation costs for GIS-T in Korea in the future.
Development of City Gas Facilities Information Management System Work analysis and System configuration
Journal of Korea Spatial Information Society, volume 4, issue 2, 1996, Pages 181~187
The purposes of this paper is to propose a methology for the efficient work analysis and system configuration for the developing of facilities information management system for city gas facilites. For this, work defining and user requirement was reflected on system, and systematic system development was derived through defining the problems of existing facilities management system. The study can be summarized as follows: First, existing work was computerized effectively by feedback with user interview on analyzing work. Second, it is appropriate to approach on system development in view of SI(System Integrate) which integrates Management Information System(MIS) and Geograph¬ic Information System(GIS). Third, it was found that Client-Server environment is good solution for now and future computer environment.
3D Visualization of DEM using VRML on the Internet
Journal of Korea Spatial Information Society, volume 4, issue 2, 1996, Pages 189~195
If DEM can be visualized by using the VRML which is 3D object expression language, we need not do the most laborous work of making VRML file because of the generality of the DEM. So we can use the 3D interactive map directly. In This paper we can see the DEM visua.lizing procedure and some possibility of Internet GIS using this way.
